Impact of Elevated Temperature in Growing Season on Growth and Bulb Development of Extremely Early-Maturing Onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Singsingball) (생육기 온도상승이 극조생 양파의 생육 및 구 비대에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the impact of elevated temperature based on climate change scenario on growth and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Singsingball) in the temperature gradient tunnels. There were treated with 3 groups, one is a control group (ambient temperature, mean temperature at $9.8^{\circ}C$), another ambient temperature $+2^{\circ}C$ (mean temperature at $12.0^{\circ}C$), and the other ambient temperature $+5^{\circ}C$ (mean temperature at $14.3^{\circ}C$). Compared with the control, plant height, neck diameter, leaf area, top fresh weight and dry weight were significantly increased at ambient $+2^{\circ}C$ temperature. Bulb diameter and bulb weight was highest at ambient $+2^{\circ}C$ temperature (mean temperature at $12.0^{\circ}C$) during the growth period. Bulb/neck diameter ratio, over 2.0 a good indicator of development of bulb, increased rapidly at ambient $+2^{\circ}C$ temperature. This result suggests that extremely early-maturing onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Singsingball) could maintain the higher productivity and bulb quality at ambient $+2^{\circ}C$ temperature. On the contrary, $5^{\circ}C$ higher than atmospheric temperature shows negative effects on yields under a future climate change scenario.

Effects of Complex Probiotics and Antibiotics on Growth Performance and Meat Quality in Broilers (복합생균제와 항생제 급여가 육계의 생산성 및 육질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of feeding complex probiotics (Lactobacillus casei, Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus oryzae, Streptomyces griseus, $1.5{\times}10^{10}$ CFU/kg) and antibiotics (oxytetracycline (OTC), 110 ppm) on growth performance and meat quality characteristics of broiler chicks. In the experiment 1, 0.3% complex probiotics feeding level was chosen to be proper addition level due to better average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion (FC) and dressing percent (DP) results among 3 levels (0.1, 0.3 or 0.5%). In the experiment 2, 5 treatments (T1, no probiotics + no antibiotics; T2, probiotics 0.3% + no antibiotics; T3, probiotics 0.3% + antibiotics 50%; T4, probiotics 0.3% + antibiotics 100%; T5, no probiotics + antibiotics 100%) were investigated. In the growth performance of broilers, T5 (antibiotics 100% only) showed the highest (p<0.05) ADG and FC values while T1 (control) showed the worst growth performance. However, T3 (probiotics 0.3% + antibiotics 50%) showed higher ADG (p<0.05), FC (p<0.05) and DP (p>0.05) values compared to control. In the breast and leg meat quality, T3 showed similar pH, proximate composition, cooking loss and meat color values except shear force value compared to T5. Addition of 0.3% probiotics with 50% antibiotics (T3) tended to lower the blood cholesterol levels of broiler chicks and Escherichia coli or Salmonella counts in cecum microflora of broiler chicks compared to T5. In the residual antibiotics analysis, T3 contained 0.04 ppm of residual antibiotics in the breast meat while T4 or T5 contained 0.1 ppm of residual antibiotics and addition of 0.3% probiotics with 50% antibiotics in broiler diets could lower the residual antibiotics level to 40% in the meat. As a result, 0.3% probiotics addition with 50% antibiotics in the broiler diets could be recommended for the production of high quality broiler meat.

Effect of Planting Density, Growing Medium and Nutrient Solution Strength on Growth and Development of Lily in Box Culture (나리의 상자재배시 재식밀도, 배지 및 양액농도가 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This purpose of this study was to examine the effect of planting density, growing medium and strength of a nutrient solution (National Horticultural Research Institute's nutrient solution: HRI's) on the growth and development of Oriental hybrid lily 'Le Reve' in a box cultivation. The planting density with 14, 18 and 22 bulbs had sprouting one day earlier than other treatments. Planting density of 22 bulbs flowered first, while six bulbs flowered the last, indicating that higher planting densities led earlier flowering. The increasing planting density increased stem length of cut flowers. On the other hand, cut flower quality was improved when the planting density was lower. The incidence of physiological disorders such as blasting was more frequent in planting density of 22, 18, and 14, indicating that higher planting densities caused higher incidences of physiological disorders. All planting densities except 22 bulbs displayed superior results in width, weight, number, and scale weight of the bulbs. Greater planting densities led to inferior bulb enlargement and an increased decomposition rate. pH decreased in all treatments after the bulb enlargement and decreased more as the planting density increased. Contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg increased, while contents of K and Ca decreased, as the planting density increased. The rice hull+coir (1:1, v/v) treatment was better than others, but did not show that much of a difference. Moreover, in bulbs enlargement after cut flower harvest, lily medium and perlite+peat moss treatments showed superior results, and decomposition rate was the greatest in the rice hull+coir (1:1, v/v) treatment. In the HRI's solution strength treatment from the period of flower bud emergence to flower harvest, higher solution strengths gave better cut flower quality in terns of length, weight, and number of flowers. The non-treated control and one third strength of a HRI's solution hastened flowering, indicating that lower strengths led to earlier flowering. According to the results of leaf analysis as affected by solution strength during the flower harvest, absorption rates of N and K were greater when the strength was higher, and Ca and Mg showed the same tendency. On the other hand, the absorption rate of P was the lowest in all treatments.

Growth and Bulb Characteristics of Extremely Early-Maturing Onion by Air Temperature Variation at Different Altitudes (해발고도별 기온변화에 따른 극조생 양파의 생육 및 구특성)

  • A study was carried out to determine the influence of climatic environments on the growth characteristics and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing type onion grown at different altitudes, such as 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m above sea level (ASL). The mean air temperature during the growing season of extremely early-maturing type onion (October 18 to April 27) was $10.8^{\circ}C$, $9.6^{\circ}C$, $8.1^{\circ}C$ and $6.1^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m ASL. The mean air temperature during the bulb growth period (March 16 to April 14) was recorded $10.5^{\circ}C$, $9.4^{\circ}C$, $7.9^{\circ}C$ and $6.0^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700 m ASL. Plant height, neck diameter, leaf number, leaf area, top fresh weight and top dry weight were significantly increased in growing of extremely early-maturing type onion at 60m ASL. Bulb/neck diameter ratio increased rapidly under the same temperature regime. The diameter and weight of the bulb were also the largest at 60m ASL during the bulb growth period (daily mean temperature of $12.5^{\circ}C$). At 60m ASL, there was the highest bulb size like a height, diameter and weight of bulb related directly on onion yield in the bulb growth period from March 16 to April 14. In contrast, yield and bulb quality were considerably decreased at 700m ASL during the bulb growth stage (daily mean temperature of $8.4^{\circ}C$). The quantity of extremely early-maturing type onion has gradually decreased as the daily average temperature drops below $12.5^{\circ}C$ during the bulb growth stage (March 16 to April 14). As a result, the lower temperature (daily mean temperature below $12.5^{\circ}C$) during the bulb growth stage significantly decreased the size and quantity of bulb in direction proportion.

  • Experiments were conducted to determine effects of whole and processed corns on in situ disappearance rates of nutrients in the rumen and in vitro degradability of dry matter by rumen microorganisms. Whole corn(WC) was processed into four different types; ground corn(GC), cracked corn(CC), flaked corn(FC), and soaked corn(SC). In the in situ experiment, the rate of ruminal DM disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC(76.1%) and lowest in WC and SC(12% ; P<0.01). The rate of ruminal CP disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC and CC(48 and 38%, respectively; P<0.01). The rate of ruminal OM disappearance after 48 hour incubation was highest in GC(76.14%) and lowest in WC and SC(11.82 and 12.26%, respectively; P<0.01). In the in vitro experiment, the two-stage incubation technique was used to measure digestibilities of whole and processed corns. The digestibility of DM was higher in GC, CC and FC(86.95, 85.84 and 82.29%, respectively) than in WC(15.36%; P<0.01).

Effects of Feeding Rye Silage on Growth Performance, Blood, and Carcass Characteristics in Finishing Pigs (호맥 사일리지의 급여가 비육돈의 생산성, 혈액성상 및 도체특성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding rye silage on growth performance, blood and carcass characteristics in finishing pigs. The total of eighteen($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$) pigs($74.22{\pm}0.71kg$) were used for 49-day assay. Dietary treatments included 1) CON(basal diet), 2) S1(1.66% rye silage) and 3) S2(3.32% rye silage). In growth performance, from 4 to 7 weeks, average daily feed intake(ADFI) in pigs fed CON diet was higher than pigs fed S1 and S2 diets. Through the entire experimental period($0{\sim}7$ weeks), a ADFI in CON and S2 treatments was higher than S1 treatment (p<0.05). Serum cortisol concentration of pigs fed rye silage decreased significantly compared to pigs fed basal diet (p<0.05). The Hunter's $L^*$(lightness) value of loin in the pigs fed S2 diet was higher than that of loin in the pigs fed CON diet(p<0.05). The $b^*$(yellowness) value of loin in the pigs fed S1 and S2 diets were higher than CON treatment(p<0.05). Backfat thickness in CON treatment increased significantly compared to S1 and S2 treatments(p<0.05). Among fatty acid contents of lean meat, the contents of palmitic and stearic acids were significantly higher in CON than others(p<0.05), where as eicosenoic and linolenic acids were the highest in S2 treatment among treatments(p<0.05). Total SFA(saturated fatty acid) was the highest in CON(p<0.05) and S1 and S2 treatments were higher USFA/SFA(unsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid) ratio than CON treatment. In fats, linolenic acid was higher in S2 treatment than those of S1 and CON treatments(p<0.05). Digestibility of dry matter in pigs fed S1 and S2 diets was greater than that of pigs fed CON diet(p<0.05) and S1 treatment was higher than others on digestibility of nitrogen(p<0.05). VFA(volatile fatty acid) emission from focal, measured after 1 day, increased significantly in pigs fed S1 and S2 diets(p<0.05). In conclusions, our results showed that feeding rye silage might be beneficial in decrease of cortisol concentration, hunter's $L^*$(lightness) value and $b^*$(yellowness), fatty acid contents, and nutrient digestibility. However, there should be more study on the relationship between feeding rye silagr and finishing pigs.

  • Three lots of Chung-Kook-Jang were prepared by the use of 2 strains of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus natto. For four samples taken from each lot in 12 hrs interval changes of nitrogenous compounds, insoluble protein, water soluble protein, peptides, free amino acids, amino and ammonia nitrogens during Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation, were studied together with the changes of moisture, pH, proteolytic enzyme activity. In addition the average peptide length of the peptides of a Bacillus subtilis lot was determined by the method of molecular sieving using ion exchange resin. The results were as follows: 1. The contents of moisture and total-nitrogen changed little in all samples throughout the fermentation as it would be expected. 2. In all three experimental lots the pH became higher gradually from the initial value of 6.65 to the final $7.5{\sim}7.85$ during the fermentation. Proteolytic enzyme activities, in accordance with this pH change, steadily increased up to $48{\sim}60$ hrs. of fermentation and then slightly decreased, probably affected by the high pH. The most strong proteolytic activity was observed in the experimental Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation lot using the Bacillus subtilis K-27 isolated by the author. 3. The contents of insoluble protein nitrogen in soybeans increased markedly (5%) by the cooking, after steeping 12 hrs in water. During the Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation, however, it decreased from 1/2 to 1/10 of that of the cooked soybeans. 4. The contents of water soluble protein nitrogen (5%) whereas, greatly decreased to the value of 1.0% by the cooking; but little changed further during the fermentation, 5. The total contents (0.25%) of peptides, amino, and ammonia-nitrogens, PAA-N., increased almost double by the cooking and steadily became higher as the fermentation proceeded, reaching finally up to$4{\sim}7%$ in 72 hrs fermentation. 6. The amounts of free amino acids of soybean generally decreased during the processing of cooking, even some of them like glutamic acid were destroyed completely, However in the subsequent Chung-Kook-Jang fermentation for 72 hrs., they showed from several to a few hundreds folds increases depending upon the kinds of amino acids. Valine which was contained in HCl-hydrolyzed steeped or cooked soybeans in amounts $220{\sim}267mg%$ was not detected at all as the free amino acid in all fermented samples. 7. Average peptide length (APL) of all fractions, eluted and fractionated by using the Dowex-50 ion exchange resin column, and fraction collector showed the highest value for the cooked soybean and then decreased as the fermentation proceeded. The APL value of effluent showed the highest in 12 hrs fermented sample, The value decreased thereafter by fermentation.

Studies of the soil characteristice and NPK fertilizer response of local valley paddy soils in rolling lands(Jisan and Yongji series) (저구릉(低丘陵) 곡간지(谷間地) 답토양(沓土壤)(지산통(芝山統)과 용지통(龍池統))의 특성(特性)과 시비반응(施肥反應)에 관(關)한 연구)

  • Following results are obtained by re-evaluating N. P. K. and soil improvement trials conducted from 1964 to 1969 in valley paddy soils in rolling lands (Jisan-series, imperfectly drained and Yongji-series, moderately well drained). 1. Average grain yield of rice in no fertilizer plots and the highest yield plots for Yongji-series (31 experiments) were 319 and 507kg/10a respectively, and that of Jisan-series (15 experiments) were 396 and 567kg/10a respectively. The fertility difference between two series may have been a result of the cultivation history. Jisan-series is a mature soil which has a long cultivation history and Yongji-series is sub-mature soil 2. Soil chemical characteristics for Jisan-series are charaterized by 12.8meq/100g in CEC, 6.5meq/100g in exchangeable Ca, 3.9% in OM, and 64 ppm in available $P_2O_5$ For Yongji-series they were 10.4meq/100g in CEC, 4.7meq/100g in exchangeable Ca, 3.2% in OM and 103ppm in available $P_2O_5$. 3. Deep plowing and application of organic matter and lime are expected to be effective in increasing fertility level of soils of Yongji-series. The same will be effective in some soils of Jisan series where the fertility level is low. 4. Jisan-series shows high response to nitrogen, while Yongji series shows sharp decrease in rice yield at the high levels of nitrogen. Both series, however, showed high response to nitrogen only when the OM level was higher than 3%. 5. The optimum level of nitrogen was 8~9kg for Jisan-series, and 10~11kg/10a for Yongji-series. The yield increase per kg of applied nitrogen was 12kg for Jisan-series and 13kg for Yongji series. 6. The optimum level of phosphorus at the optimum level of nitrogen was 6kg/10a for Yongji-series and 3kg/10a for Jisan-series. The optimum level of phosphorus, however, was different depending upon the nitrogen level. It was assumed that Yongji-series required more fertilizer (available $P_2O_5$ was 110ppm) than Jisan-series (available $P_2O_5$ was 64ppm) because the availability of P was higher in Jisan-series than Yongji-series due to the severe reduction of Jisan-series. 7. The response of potassium was also depending upon the nitrogen level. In Yongji-series the potassium response at 8kg/10a nitrogen level decreased with increasing levels of potassium, but the higher level of introgen, potassium response was also higher. In Jisan-series potassium response was recognized at all nitrogen levels. The optimum level of potassium at the optimum level of nitrogen was 8kg/10a in both serieses. 8. The reasonable ratio of NPK fertilizer seems to be 1:0.6:0.6:for Yongji-series and 1:0.4:1 for Jisan-series as N:$P_2O_5$:K.
