  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the structural integrity of the Class 1500 Bellows Seal 3 inch globe valve classified as seismic category IIA. The finite element analysis program, ANSYS, Version 10.0, is used to perform both a modal frequency analysis and an equivalent static stress analysis of the subject valve modeling. The modal frequency analysis results show the fundamental natural frequency is greater than 33 Hz. Therefore the equivalent static stress analysis is performed using the seismic acceleration values. The stresses resulted from various loadings and their combinations are evaluated based on the structural acceptance criteria of the ASME Code. The stresses in the glove valve due to the seismic loadings are within the allowable limits. It is concluded that the globe valve structure is maintaining the structural integrity fur the seismic loading conditions.

  • Vibrational behaviors of highway girder bridges due to heavy traffics are discussed, and empirical formulae for impact factors are suggested in this paper. Appropriate vehicle model for vibration analysis is found and impact factors are calculated with different surface roughnesses, vehicle speeds and span lengths. It is shown that the present codes tend to underestimate impact factors.

  • In this study, structural strain responses of the jacket-type Uldolmok tidal current power plant structure under severe tidal environments were measured and analyzed using long-term measurement system during construction and also operation. It was observed that there were significant changes in strain responses at the steps of jacket lifting, block loading, pile ejection and insertion. Strains due to dead loads and tidal loads were analyzed before and after removal of a jacket leg, and it was also found that the strains due to dead load were much significantly changed after jacket leg removal. From the measurement data during operation, it was found that strain responses were fluctuated with M2 and M4 tidal periods and also relatively short period of about 10 min due to the peculiar tidal characteristics in the Uldolmok strait. Finally, the neural network-based non-parametric estimation models were investigated to build up the signal-based structural damage monitoring system.

  • Reinforced soil structures may experience large local movements between soil and reinforcement. The failure modes of a reinforced structure depend on several factors which are governed by deformation and slipping of the reinforcement. In some cases, pulling out of the reinforcement may occur instead of rupturing, The growing use of geosynthetic liner system for storage of solid and liquid wastes has led to a number of slope instability problems where the synthetic liner may undergo a large amount of stretching and slipping as a result of the loading. The conventional finite element model for the soil-reinforcement interface uses a zero thickness joint element with normal and shear stiffnesses and can only accommodate a small amount of deformation. When a large slippage occurs, the model provides an i ncorrect mechanism for deformation. This paper presents a new interface finite element model which is able to simulate a large amount of slippage between soil and reinforcement. The formulation of the model is presented and the capability of the model is demonstrated using illustrative examples.

  • Natural frequency is a key parameter to determine the seismic and wind loading of tall flexible structures, and to assess the wind-induced vibration for serviceability check. In this study, natural frequencies and associated mode shapes were obtained from measured acceleration data and system identification technique. Subsequently, finite element(FE) models for a tall reinforced concrete buildings were built using a popular PC-based finite element analysis program and calibrated to match their natural frequencies and mode shapes to actual values. The calibration of the FE model included: 1) compensation of modulus of elasticity considering the mix design strength, 2) flexural stiffness of floor slabs, and 3) major non-structural components such as plain concrete walls. Natural frequencies and mode shapes from the final FE model showed best agreement with the measured values.

  • An efficient preprocessor is developed for the finite element structural analysis of a ship's hull module. A hull module structure is divided into three groups for easy data handling : longitudinal members, transverse members, and transverse bulkheads. Based on the classification rules and design practices at shipyards, the preprocessor can create finite element nodes, elements, boundary conditions, and loadings automatically. By connecting the preprocessor with the ANSYS program, we can obtain the results of ship structureal analysis more efficiently. Applied to a typical double-hull oil tanker, the present preprocessor shows various advantages over conventional general-purpose preprocessors.

  • An elastic analysis under wind load was performed for the double layered plastic greenhouse model developed particularly for minimizing damages under typhoons at Cheju Citrus Research institute in Seagipo city. General EVA film was used for the inner covering and the developed special film which would break the wind pressure down was used for the outer covering. The wind tunnel test showed this special film reduced the wind speed up to 86 to 98% under well controlled situation. Based on the elastic analysis performed in the study, the behavior of the greenhouse was changed significantly due to the boundary conditions. Not like other researchers before we applied dead load of the concrete support to the ground pipe and fixed support boundary conditions at the 4 corner pipes. The analysis shows that the greenhouse was lifted and pulled the pipe out of the ground due to the sucking wind pressure. The behavior of the greenhouse was quite similar to that one real greenhouse failure. Therefore, not only we need to find the realistic boundary conditions for the supports, but also need to find how to rest the pipe supports on the ground without economic loss.

  • When the driver riding in a bicycle goes on board, the load of driver is shown differently according to the position loaded on the frame of bicycle. The load is applied most at the joint of bike frame and the load at the mid-part of frame is applied least than the other parts. So, the weight of frame is decreased as the part not applied with a lot of load is manufactured into the thin thickness. As the part applied with high load is manufactured into the thick thickness, it can be endured through this load. The configurations of general frame, double butted and triple butted were modelled by using CATIA program. The durabilities of each model due to the load of passenger were investigated by carrying the structural and fatigue analyses. As this study result investigated with the analysis program of ANSYS, the deformation of general frame happened most and that of triple butted became least. These simulation analysis data are intended to be used to design the actual bicycle frame in the most efficient way at design and manufacture.
