  • In order to determine optimal design length of adhesive joint of a composite rocket motor case, stress analysis of joint part according to changes of adhesive length was done. Adhesive length has a range of 50 mm to 300 mm as design variables. The ratio of adhesive length without any stress gradient to initial non-stressed adhesive length was determined as evaluation criteria for selection of adhesive length, which called "stress gradient length ratio". The numerical result showed that stress gradient length ratio of joint part with adhesive length of more than 200 mm was increased very slowly with increase of adhesive length. It means that adhesive length of about 200 mm could be the optimal dimension to ensure the structural safety of joint part against internal pressure of 2,500 psi.

  • A concrete shear wall system is commonly adopted in high-rise residential apartment buildings. In the construction stage, a rectangular opening is often made for the convenience of horizontal movement of workers, and construction materials and equipment. In the case of safety or stability assessment of a shear wall, the cutout part can be a critical factor. Finite element method is adopted to investigate the elastic stability behavior of the perforated unit shear wall. The key analysis parameters are the cutout location and its size. The effect of out-of-plane bending and horizontal shear are also examined in the stability analysis.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the mechanical characteristics and settlement feature of the composite ground with structural form changes. The laboratory model test is a soil tanker to be contained with clay and grid form improved soil, which is conducted in total 9 case with the uniaxial compressive strength of improved soil and replacement ratio of improved soil. The numerical analysis for variation of stress distribution ratio with depth was performed in the same conditions which are the laboratory model test. As a result, stress distribution ratios in mid and high replacement ratio are increasing and settlement is decreasing, except low replacement ratio. This study is presented for form effect ratio and settlement reduction factor with change of structure form, which is able to be helpful in further research and reference for change of structural forms at composite ground.

  • Steel corrosion due to carbonation in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures easily occurs in urban cities with high CO2 concentration. RC structures are always subjected to external loading with various boundary conditions. The induced stress level causes changes in diffusion of harmful ion like CO2. In this work, a quantification of carbonation progress with stress level is carried out and carbonation prediction is derived through the relations. Determining the design parameters like cover depth, CO2 diffusion coefficient, carbonatable materials, and exterior CO2 concentration as random variables, service lifes under carbonation with design parameter's variation are obtained through MCS(Monte Carlo Simulation). Additionally the service life with different stress level is derived and the results are compared with those from deterministic method. Cover depth and cement hydrates are evaluated to be very effective to resist carbonation, and the proposed method which can consider the effect of stress on service life can be applied to maintenance priority determination.

  • The main purpose of the ball valve ball is to be moved by the rotation of the stem when fully open or completely closed. In this study the heat of the initial model, which used a structure interaction analysis technique, tried to examine the structural safety of the high temperature for the ball valve. In the initial model the stress of the exiting sheet was more than the yield strength. We selected two design shapes with variables of length and thickness for the optimization of the sheet. The Kriging interpolation method was applied to a meta-model-based optimization technique. As a result, it was possible to find a thickness and length for the sheet within the yield strength. This was done by measuring the value of the capacity coefficient of the valve and evaluating the performance of the ball valve.

  • The objective of this research is to study effects of the residual stresses on the crack growth and the life of the structure, caused by cold working around the hole of the aircraft structure which will be jointed by rivets and bolts, etc. The compensated Morrow's equation, by experimental data from the materials AL7075-T6 and AL2024-T3, is suggested to calculate the values of the fatigue life prediction of the structure. Also, the compensated Forman's equation, by experimental data from a material AL7075-T6, is suggested to calculate the values of the crack growth prediction of the structure. It is founded that the calculated values from the suggested equations are almost close to the known values of the fatigue life prediction and the crack growth prediction. It is shown that this paper, associated with an initial research on the effects of residual stresses around hole, gives a direction to study the problem at the aircraft maintenance field.

  • Fatigue strength assessments with two types of load carrying fillet weldment under out-of-plane bending load have been carried out by using both hot spot stress and structural stress methods. In this study, a derivation for the structural stress method using shell element models is discussed in detail. Finite element analysis using shell element models have been performed for the assessment of fatigue strength. As a result of the fatigue strength evaluation for load carrying transverse fillet weldment, hot spot stress method is found to be consistent with structural stress method and measurement. Hot spot stress, however, estimated for the load carrying longitudinal fillet weldment exhibit large variation with respect to mesh size and element type while the calculated structural stress for the longitudinal fillet weldment is relatively independent of mesh size. On the other hand, drawbacks and doubts associated with applying the structural stress method such as the guidance of virtual node method have been discussed.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

  • This work proposes an optimality criteria applicable to the optimum design of plane frames subject to multiple behavioral constraints on member stresses and lateral displacements of nodes and also to side constraints on design variables. The method makes use of a first order approximation for both deflection and stress constraints instead of the zero order approximation based on the concept of FSD (fully stressed design). A redesign algorithm is derived from a mathematically rigorous method which uses the Newton-Raphson method to solve the system of nonlinear constraint equations and reduces the design space whenever minimum size restrictions become active. When applied to worked examples it proved more accurate and efficient, and it is often found that optimum designs are not fully stressed designs. This fact suggests that this rigorous method is worth what it claims for complicated computing and thus had better replace the crude stress ratio algorithm adopted by the majority of optimality criteria approaches. This is particularly true as long as we enjoy ever-increasing computing power at negligible costs.

  • In this study, the structural analyses were performed on the number of leaf springs in large truck. The deformations were small for all four models. The maximum stress of model A was found to be the largest, and that of model D was the smallest. Model A was seen about 1.87 times larger than model D and about 1.52 times larger than model B. The maximum stresses of models C and D were seen to be less. In terms of the effect to reinforce one more overlapping spring, The effect of the enhancement of the strength of model D was shown to be small by comparing with model C. Therefore, model C with three overlapping springs is thought to be efficient in design and good in strength. The structural strength of leaf spring can be evaluated by applying this study result to the leaf spring at large truck. And it is seen that the result can be the design of the leaf spring with durability at large truck and the aesthetic convergence.
