  • Zeolite SUZ-4 was successfully synthesized with TEAOH (Tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide) as structure directing agent under a vigorous stirring condition. Well-defined zeolite SUZ-4 structure was only obtained under stirring of 250 rpm or more. The results imply that stirring plays a pivotal role for reproducible synthesis. Morphology of SUZ-4 crystal was controlled by adjustment of water concentrations. The physicochemical characterization of SUZ-4 and its hydrothermal stability using a steam treatment were investigated by using XRD, BET, and $NH_3-TPD$.

  • Four series of novel liquid crystalline polyurethanes were synthesized by the polyaddition reaction of diisocyanates such as 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate (2,6-TDI), 2,5-tolylene diisocyanate (2,5-TDI), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (2,4-TDI), and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate (1,4-PDI) with 4,4'-bis(5-hydroxypentoxy)biphenyl (BP5). 4,4'-bis(5-hydroxypentoxy)biphenyl exhibited a smectic type mesophase. Mesophase was found for all synthesized liquid crystalline polyurethanes except 1,4-PDI/BP5. The structures and the thermal properties of polyurethanes were studied by using FT-IR and ^1H$ NMR spectroscopy, DSC measurements and a polarizing microscope equipped with a heating stage.

  • To manufacture of a completely biodegradable and compostable biomass -based blend polymer film, two types of cellulose acetates(DS=2.4 and DS=2.7) were blended with 5 - 50 wt% of low average molecular weight polylactide(PLA) by mixing each polymer solution having same viscosity in 10 wt% methanol/dichloromethane. Their surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The chemical structures of blend films were confirmed by the fourier transform IR spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection(FT-IR ATR) spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) photos of blend films of both CAs with less than 5 % of PLA showed homogeneous morphology. On the contrary, the other blends with higher than 20 wt% of PLA content showed a large phase separation with spherical domains. The thermal property of blend films was also analyzed with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). The tensile strength of CA/PLA blend films was increased up to $820kg_f/cm^2$ for TAC/PLA and $600kg_f/cm^2$ for DAC/PLA.

  • The structural characteristics of Antheraea yamamai and Antheraea pernyi silk were investigated by using x-ray diffraction method, IR spectroscopy and polarizing microscopy. The amino acid composition, fiber density, thermal decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature were also measured for relating these physical properties to the structure in comparison with those of Bombyx mori silk fiber. There was no significant structural difference between A. yamamai and A. pernyi silk fiber on an examination of x-ray diffraction curve and IR spectrum. Both of these wild silk fibers showed double diffraction peaks at the Bragg angle 2Θ16.7˚ and 20.5˚by x-ray diffraction analysis as well as IR absorption peaks for the bending vibration of specific groups related to ala-ala amino acid sequence. On the other hand, the x-ray diffraction curve and IR spectrum of Bombyx mori silk fiber are different from those of wild silk fibers, indicating different crystal structure as well as amino acid sequences. It showed under the polarizing microscope examination that the birefringence and optical orientation factor of wild silk fibers are much lower than those of B. mori silk. Also, the surface of degummed wild silk fibers was characterized by the longitudinal stripes of microfibrils in the direction of fiber axies. The amino acid composition, which is strongly related to the fine structure and properties, was not significantly different between these two wild silk fibers. However, the alanine content was somewhat less and polar amino acid content more for A. yamamai. As a result of fiber density measurement, the specific gravities of B. mori, A. pernyi and A. yamamai were 1.355~1.356, 1.308~1.311, 1.265~1.301g/㎤ in the order, respectively. The calculated crystallinity(%) was 64% for B. mori and 51~52% for wild silk fibers, which showed same trend by IR method in spite of somewhat higher value. The thermal decomposition behaviour was examined by DSC and TGA, showing that the degradation temperature was in the order of B mori, A. prernyi and A. yamamai at around 350$^{\circ}C$. It was also observed by TGA that the decomposition seems to proceed step by step according to their specific regions in the fiber structure, resulting the difference in their thermal stabilities. The glass transition temperature was turned out to be 220$^{\circ}C$ for B. mori, 240$^{\circ}C$ A. yamamai and 255$^{\circ}C$ A. pernyi by the dynamic mechanical analysis. It is expected that the chemical properties are affected by the dynamic mechanical behavior in accordance with their structural characters.

  • Polyamide (PA) oligomers, which are the hard segment of poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA), presenting thermoplastic and high performance elastomeric properties were prepared by polycondensation between 4-aminobenzoic acid and 12-aminododecanoic acid. Subsequently PEBAs were obtained by addition polymerization of the PA oligomers and various molecular weights of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG). The structure of the final PEBA was identified by using FTIR and $^1H$ NMR and the thermal properties depending on changes in the structure of hard segment were collected by using DSC and UTM analysis. As the results, the melt temperature ($T_m$), the initial modulus, and the maximum strength of PEBAs increased with an increase in aromatic moiety up to 30% without reducing crystallinity.

  • To determine the effect of chemical structure of aromatic amino curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBF (diglycidylether of bisphenol F) was cured with diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) and diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work the effect of aromatic amino curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by the chemical structure of curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBF/DDS system having the sulfone structure between the benzene rings had higher values in the thermal stability, density, shrinkage ($\%$), thermal expansion coefficient, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBF/DDM system having methylene structure between the benzene rings, whereas the DGEBF/DDS system presented low values in maximum exothermic temperature, conversion of epoxide, and grass transition temperature. These results are caused by the relative effects of sulfone group having strong electronegativity and methylene group having (+) repulsive property. The result of fractography shows that the grain distribution of DGEBF/DDS system is more irregular than that of the DGEBF/DDM system.

  • Polypropylene (PP)/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (F-MWNT) nanocomposites were prepared by using solution intercalation method with different F-MWNT loads. The PP composite films, which contain dodecanol-MWNT (DDO-MWNT) or dodecylamine-MWNT (DDA-MWNT) as reinforcing additive, were evaluated by thermomechanical properties, morphology, electrical conductivity and gas permeability. The images from electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) showed that F-MWNTs were homogeneously dispersed in PP matrix, while they were agglomerated in some other part. The addition of F-MWNT could improve thermomechanical properties of the films. The maximum enhancement was observed at 2 wt% F-MWNT. DDO-MWNT was more effective than DDA-MWNT for both tensile modulus and optical transparency of the films.

  • The synthesis of a novel series of nickel(II) complexes with new ligands derived from hydrazones of isoniazid have been reported in present work. The complexes have general compositions [$Ni(L)_2X_2$] or $[Ni(L)_3](ClO_4)_2$ {L = N-isonicotinamido-furfuraldimine (INH-FFL), N-isonicotinamido-3',4',5'-trimethoxybenzaldimine (INH-TMB) or N-isonicotinamido-cinnamalidene (INH-CIN) and X = $Cl^-$, ${NO_3}^-$, $ NCS^-$ or $CH_3COO^-$}. The ligands hydrazones behave as neutral bidentates (N and O donor) through the carbonyl oxygen and azomethine nitrogen. The new complexes with octahedral geometry have been characterized by elemental analysis, molecular weight determinations, magnetic susceptibility/moment, thermogravimetric, electrochemical and spectroscopic studies viz. infrared and electronic spectra. On the basis of conductivity measurements in nitrobenzene ($PhNO_2$) solution the [$Ni(L)_2X_2$] and $[Ni(L)_3](ClO_4)_2$ complexes have been found to be non-electrolytes and 1:2 electrolytes, respectively. Thermal properties have also been investigated, which support the geometry of the complexes. Antibacterial and antifungal properties of nickel(II) complexes and few standard drugs have also been examined and it has been observed that the complexes have moderate antibacterial activities.

  • The Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile(AN) and styrene(ST) onto chloroprene rubber(CR) were carried out with benzoyl peroxide(BPO) as an initiator. The synthesized graft copolymer(ACS) was separated from polymeric mixture by the extraction with ethyl acetate and n-hexane, acetone and methanol, dimethylformamide(DMF) and methanol mixed solvent systems. The graft copolymer obtained, acrylonitrile-chloroprene-styrene(ACS) was identified by IR spectrophotometer. The effect of mole ratio of styrene to acrylonitrile, reaction time and temperature, initiator concentration, CR content and solvents on graft copolymerization were examined. It was observed that the grafting efficiency increased with [ST]/[AN] mole ratio and reaction time. The grafting efficiency increased with increasing initiator concentration and CR content. The maximum grafting efficiency was obtained when the mole ratio of [ST]/[AN] was 1.5 and reaction was made at 40hrs, and $70^{\circ}C$ using chloroform/toluene mixed solvent. The thermal properties, light resistance and flammability of ACS were compared with those of ABS and AES. It was found that flame retardancy of related polymers increased in the order ACS>ABS>AES. The thermal stability of ACS was greatly improved when compared with ABS or AES. Morphology of ACS was also investigated by using a transmisson electron microscope(TEM).

  • The microcapsules containing triphenyl phosphate (TPP), a flame retardant, were prepared by phase-inversion emulsification technique using the epoxy resin (Novolac type) with excellent physical properties and network structure. This microencapsulation process was adopted for the protection of TPP evaporation and wetting of polymer composite during the polymer blend processing. The TPP, epoxy resin and mixed surfactants were emulsified to oil in water (O/W) by the phase inversion technology and then conducted on the crosslinking of epoxy resin by in-situ polymerization. The capsule size and size distribution of TPP capsules was controlled by mixed surfactant ratio, concentration and TPP contents, The formation and thermal property of TPP capsules were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology and size of TPP capsules were also investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. As the surfactant concentration increased, the TPP capsules were more spherical and mono-dispersed at the same weight ratio of mixed surfactants (F127: SDBS).
