Neuro-Anatomical Evaluation of Human Suitability for Rural and Urban Environment by Using fMRI (자연과 도시환경의 인체친화성에 대한 신경해부학적 평가: 기능적 자기공명영상법)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify different cerebral areas of the human brain associated with rural and urban picture stimulation using a 3.0 Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and further to investigate the human suitability for rural and urban environments. A total of 27 right-handed participants (mean age: $27.3{\pm}3.7$) underwent fMRI study on a 3.0T MR scanner. The brain activation patterns were induced by visual stimulation with each rural and urban sceneries. The participants were divided into two groups as 26 subjects favorable to rural scenery and 14 subjects unfavorable to urban scenery based on their filled-in questionnaire. The differences of the brain activation in response to two extreme types of pictures by the two sample t-test were characterized as follows: the activation areas observed in rural scenery over urban were the insula, middle frontal gyrus, precuneus, caudate nucleus, superior parietal gyrus, superior occipital gyrus, fusiform gyrus, and globus pallidus. In urban scenery over rural, the inferior frontal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, amygdala, and posterior cingulate gyrus were activated. The fMRI patterns also clearly show that rural scenery elevated positive emotion such as happiness and comfort. On the contrary, urban scenery elevated negative emotion, resulting in activation of the amygdala which is the key region for the feelings of fear, anxiety and unpleasantness. This study evaluated differential cerebral areas of the human brain associated with rural and urban picture stimulation using a 3.0 Tesla fMRI. These findings will be useful as an objective evaluation guide to human suitability for ecological environments that are related to brain activation with joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure.

Salty-taste Activation of Human Brain Disclosed by Gustatory fMRI Study (뇌기능 자기공명영상 장치를 이용한 짠맛 자극에 따른 인간 뇌의 반응에 대한 기초 연구)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to observe the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) contrast changes due to the reaction of human brain at a gustatory sense in response to a salty-taste stimulation. Materials and Methods : Twelve healthy, non-smoking, right-handed male subjects (mean age: 25.6, range: 23-28 years) participated in this salty-taste stimulus functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) study. MRI scans were performed with 1.57 GE Signa, using a multi-slice GE-EPI sequence according to a blood-oxy-gen-level dependent (BOLD) experiment paradigm. Scan parameters included matrix size $128\times128$, FOV 250 mm, TR 5000 msec, TE 60 msec, TH/GAP 5/2 mm. Sequential data acquisitions were carried out for 42 measurements with a repetition time of 5 sec for each taste-stimulus experiments. Analysis of fMRI data was carried out using SPM99 implemented in Matlab. NaCl solution $(3\%)$ was used as a salty stimulus. The task paradigm consisted of alternating rest-stimulus cycles (30-second rest, 15-second stimulus) for 210 seconds. During the stimulus period, NaCl-solution was presented to the subject's mouth through plastic tubes as a bolus of delivered every 5 sec using -processor controlled auto-syringe pump. Results : Insula, frontal opercular taste cortex, amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were activated by a salty-taste stimulation $(NaCl,\;3\%)$ in the fMRI experiments. And dosolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was also significantly responded to salty-taste stimuli. Activation areas of the right side hemisphere were more superior to the left side hemisphere. Conclusion : The results of this study well correspond to the fact that both insula, amygdala, OFC, DLPFC areas are established as taste cortical areas by neuronal recordings in primates. Authors found that laboratory-developed auto-syringe pump is suitable for gustatory fMRI study. Further research in this field will accelerate to inquire into the mechanism of higher order gustatory process.

A Functional MRI Study on the Brain Activation Associated with Mental Calculation (기능적 자기공명영상을 이용한 수리연산의 대뇌 활성화에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose : In order to investigate the functional brain anatomy associated with mental calculation, functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed. Materials and Methods : In six normal right handed subjects, functional MR images were obtained using a 1.57 MR scanner and the EPI BOLD technique. The study included experiment I and experiment II. Each experiment consisted of five resting and four activation periods with each period of 30 seconds. During the activation period of both experiment I and II, calculation equations[an example: $(4+5)\times8=72$] were presented and the subjects were instructed to decide true or false of them. During the resting period of experiment I, the subjects were instructed to visually fixate on a crosshair. During the resting period of experiment II, two diagrams (an example: $(\bullet,\;\blacksquare)$)were presented and the subjects were instructed to decide they are same or not. For the post-processing of images, the SPM program was used, with the threshold of significance set at p<0.00001. The activated areas during the tasks were assessed. Results : In experiment 1, the inferior frontal gyrus, prefrontal cortex, promoter area, supplementary motor area, and intraparietal sulcus including superior parietal cortex were activated bilaterally. Although these areas were also activated in experiment II, the activated signals in the right frontal and parietal lobes were lessened. Conclusion : The left inferior frontal gyrus and prefrontal cortex and bilateral intraparietal sulci were activated during mental calculation. The right frontal and parietal lobes might be related to attention and decision making.

Aroma Characteristics of Tricholoma matsutake Mushrooms Collected from Eleven Major Sites in Korea (한국(韓國)의 11개(個) 주요(主要) 산지(産地)에서 채집(採集)한 송이(松栮)의 향기성분(香氣成分)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The objectives of this study were to identify aroma characteristics of Tricholoma matsutake(S. Ito et Imai) Sing. growing in different geograghic ranges in South Korea. Mushrooms were collected from 11 major sites which included four sites(Bonghwa, Uljin, Goryung and Chungdo) in Kyongbuk Province, three sites(Changnyung, Hadong and Hamyang) in Kyongnam Province, two sites(Yangyang and Inje) in Kangwon Province, one site(Goisan) in Choongbuk Province, and one site(Namwon) in Chonbuk Province. One of three mushrooms from each site were used for measurements of aromatic characteristics. Aromatic compounds were identified using a dynamic headspace trap method at $40^{\circ}C$ and GC-MSD(gas chromatograph-mass spectrometric detector) method. A total of 25 aromatic compounds were identified. Large variations in the composition and amount of aromatic compounds were noticed. Major aroma compound was 1-octen-3-ol, while methyl cinnamate known as the major aroma compound in matsutake was not detected at all. The total amount of aromatic compounds was highest in Bonghwa, and decreased in the order of Chungdo, Inje, Hamyang, Uljin, and Yangyang. Based on the total amount, kinds and amounts of individual aromatic compounds, the mushrooms from 11 major sites were grouped into following four types : 1) Bongwha Type : the total amount of aromatic compounds was highest, with major compound being 3-methyl 1-butanol. 2) Hamyang Type including Chungdo, Yangyang and Inje : 1-octen-3-of comprised 2/3 of total aromatic compounds, with second major being 3-methyl butanal. 3) Uljin Type : 1-octen-3-ol comprised 94% of total aromatic compounds, with other compounds being almost nothing. 4) Goisan Type including Goryung, Namwon, Changnyung, and Hadong : the total amount of aromatic compounds was lower than other three types.

Effect of Peking-Duck By-Product Extracts Supplemented with Medicinal Herbs on Serum Heavy Metal Levels and Blood Parameters of Rats Exposed to Lead and Mercury (한약재를 첨가한 오리부산물 추출액이 납과 수은에 노출된 흰쥐 혈청의 중금속 및 혈액지표에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was planned to develop a functional supplement by food resources to prevent and lessen the deleterious effects caused by environmental pollutants such as polluted food, air, water and heavy metals. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of peking-duck extracts supplemented with six kinds of medicinal herbs (DJ) on the intoxication of lead and mercury in rats. Sprague-Dawley rat weighing $150g\pm15g$ g, were randomly assigned to 5 groups, basal diet only (NCG), heavy metal without DJ injection (HCG), heavy metals and DJ (3 mg/mL) injection (HMLD), heavy metal and DJ (30 mg/mL) injection (HMMD), heavy metal and D] (300 mg/mL) injection (HMHD). Mecury (Hg) and lead (Pb) injected at the level of 50 ppm for 17 days. Also DJ oral feeding was continued for 31 days. The result of this study were as follows; Food intake and body weight gain in heavy metal administered groups were lower than those of control group (NCG). The activities of GOT, GPT and BUN level were significantly reduced in DJ-treated groups as compared to HCG. DJ was shown to suppress the accumulation of Hg and Pb in serum. The results suggest that DJ might have protective effect on Hg and Pb intoxication.

Effects of Web-Based Nutrition Counseling on Nutrient Intake and Blood Glucose in Type II Diabetic Patients (제 2형 당뇨병 환자의 영양섭취 및 혈당에 웹기반 영양상담이 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of web-based nutrition counseling on nutrient intake and blood glucose in type ll diabetic Patients. Forty type II diabetic patients, twenty one of them were diabetic patients without complication (Ncx-DM) and nineteen of them were diabetic patients with complication (Cx-DM), participated in a web-based nutrition counseling program. At the first nutrition counseling, the patients were counselled through interview and then follow up nutrition counseling was accomplished four times during eight weeks through tile web-based internet program. Various markers of disease risk including anthropometric indices, nutrient intake and blood glucose were measured before and after the nutrition counseling. After the nutrition counseling, body mass index and waist circumference decreased in both group but did not change significantly. Fasting blood glucose significantly decreased from 153.9 mg/dL to 139.0 mg/dL (p<0.05) in NCX-DM and from 178.2 mg/dL to 128.5 mg/dL (p<0.01) in Cx-DM after the nutrition counseling. Glycosylated hemoglobin level decreased from $9.3\%$ to $8,7\%$ in Ncx-DM and significantly decreased from $9.7\%$ to $7.8\%$ (p<0.01) in Cx-DM after the nutrition counseling. In addition, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol level significantly decreased in both group (P<0,05) after the nutrition counseling. Energy intake decreased significantly in Ncx-DM (P<0.05) and Cx-DM (p<0.01). Although the nutrient intake did not change significantly, the nutrient intake was improved after the nutrition counseling. Therefore, this study shows that the web-based nutrition counseling is effective in improving energy and nutrient intake and influences positively in blood glucose and serum lipids of the patients. In addition, these results indicate that the internet presents us with potential as a new medium for nutrition counseling in informationized society.

Effect of the Consumer's Perception of the University Foodservice Quality on the Consumer Attitude (대학교 급식소의 급식서비스 품질에 대한 인식이 소비자태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the consumer's perception of the subject to manage the foodservice operation in the university, and to analyze the effects of consumer's perception of the university foodservice qualify on intent to revisit and intent to recommend. The questionnaires were distributed to 575 students in the K University located in Masan, who were sampled by proportionate stratified sampling method. The surveys were peformed from May 17 to June 2, 2005. The 566 questionnaires were responded, and 6 unusable questionnaires were excluded, then 560 were used for the final analysis (response rate: 97.4%). For the statistical analysis, SPSS (12.0) was used to conduct the descriptive analysis, factor analysis reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows: First 254 respondants (47.3%) did not know that their foodservice operation was managed by contract foodservice company, and 374 students (66.8%) did not know the name of the contract foodservice company which runned their foodservice operation. Second, the food factor of university foodservice quality had a significant positive effect on intent to revisit (P<0.001), and the food factor of university foodservice quality also had a significant positive effect on Intent to recommend (p<0.001). It was concluded that as the food factor of university foodservice qualify Increased, the intent to revisit and the intent to recommend the university foodservice increased. So when university foodservice managers plan the foodservice operation strategy, they should focus on increasing the perception of customers' foodservice quality and also advertising contract foodservice company's brand name.

A Comparative Study Concerning the Psychopathologies between the Patients with Peptic Ulcer and Those with Essential Hypertension - Focused on Medically-Ill Out Patients - (소화성 궤양과 본태성 고혈압 환자의 정신병리에 관한 비교 연구 - 내과외래환자를 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives: The authors studied the anxiety, depression and psychological characteristics of medical out-patients, which are diagnosed as peptic ulcer disorder and essential hypertension. We also examined the state of psychiatric consultation. Methods: The subjects were composed of 56 patients with peptic ulcer disorder, 44 patients with essential hypertension and 116 controls. STAI, BDI and SCL-90R was administered to all subjects. Chart review, telephone interview and Self report questionnaire of etiology and severity of illness, drug compliance and so forth were performed in disease groups. Results: Considerable depression was noticed in 39.3% among the patients with peptic ulcer disorder, 27.7% in hypertension and 12.1% in control group by BDI. State anxiety was noticed in 44.6% among the patients with peptic ulcer disorder, 54.5% in hypertension and 18.1% in control group by State anxiety. Trait anxiety was noticed in 42.9% among the patients with peptic ulcer disorder, 34.1% in hypertension and 25.8% in control group by Trait anxiety. The higher SOM, BDI, STAI, the lower drug compliance and rapport. Psychological problems are considered of the most important etiology in 48.2% of peptic ulcer group and 45.7% of hypertensive group. But psychiatric consultation is made only in 1.8% of peptic ulcer group and 2.3% of hypertensive group. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression are common phenomena in medical outpatients. In comparison with the normal control group, peptic ulcer group showed significantly higher trait anxiety and depression and hypertensive group higher state anxiety. These characteristics are related to the drug compliance and doctor-patient relationship. These results suggested the needs of active psychiatric consultation.

Effect of Multidisciplinary Emergency Consultation System for Drug Intoxicated Patients (응급실을 내원한 약물중독 환자에 대한 다학제 응급협진체계의 효과 검증)

  • Objectives : When a patient who attempts suicide visits the emergency room, it is important that the departments of emergency medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry communicate with each other and prioritize treatment. This study was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary emergency consultation system (ECS) for drug intoxicated patients. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the data from medical records prior to the ECS, from July 2017 to May 2018, and after the ECS, from July 2018 to May 2019, to verify the effectiveness of the system. Results : After the ECS, admission to open wards was significantly higher than to the intensive care units (χ2=8.567, p=0.014). In addition, the proportion of consultations to the department of psychiatry among patients admitted to other departments tended to increase (χ2=4.202, p=0.053), and the time required for consultation response decreased (Z=-2.031, p=0.042). As a result of the consultation, the proportion of the patients who had been transferred to the department of psychiatry was increased (χ2=4.692, p=0.043), and the time spent to transfer tended to decrease (Z=-1.941, p=0.052). Conclusions : After implementing the ECS for drug intoxicated patients, unnecessary intensive care unit admissions, consultation response time, and the time spent to transfer were reduced, and the rate of consultation referrals and transfer rates increased. This means that the multidisciplinary consultation system rapidly provided essential medical services to patients at lower medical costs.

Development of Natural Seasoning using Desalinated Tuna Boiled Extract (탈염된 참치 자숙액을 이용한 천연조미료 개발)

  • The hydrolysate of desalinated tuna boiled extract (TBE) were prepared by continuous hydrolysis of TBE using a membrane reactor. TBE and tuna boiled extract hydrolysate (TBEH) were isolated depending on molecular weights. The major molecular weight distributions of TBEH-l0K, TBEH-5K and TBEH-lK were 9,800Da, 3,000Da and 990Da, respectively. The amounts of nucleotides and their related compounds of TBE were 3.47 $\mu$mole/g AMP, 23.75 $\mu$mole/g IMP, 9.07 $\mu$mole/g inosine and 1.89 $\mu$mole/g hypoxanthine. Total content of amino acids having desirable taste (glycine, glutamic acid, alanine, proline, aspartic acid, serine) was about $63\%$ of total amino acid from TBE and about $62\%$ from TBEH. The natural seasoninings were prepared with TBE and TBEH. From the results of sensory evaluations, complex seasoning containing TBEH-1K was almost equal to the shellfish complex seasoning obtained from the market. The mixed sauce which was made by mixing of $50\%$ TBEH sauce and $50\%$ fermented soy sauce was similar to the tradition soybean sauce in product quality and it showed the possibility to be used for the substitute product for acid hydrolyzed soysauce.
