  • Abnormal distribution of the enteric nerves such as adrenergic, cholinergic and peptidergic nerves may cause the functional obstruction in Hirschsprung's disease (HD). Although the sustained contraction of the aganglionic segment is the main pathophysiology of HD, the etiology and pathogenesis is not thoroughly understood, With the recent progress of molecular biology and genetics,a more detailed approach to the pathogenesis of the HD can be undertaken. In this review, the roles of the nitric oxide, nitric oxide synthase and interstitial cells of Cajal on smooth muscle relaxation, the effects of extracellular matrix, cell adhesion molecules, neurotrophic factors on the migration and maturation of the neural crest cells are described. In the section of genetic factors, familial occurrences, association of chromosomal abnormalities, RET gene, glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor gene, endothelin-3 gene and endothelin-B receptor gene and their r elationships to HD is briefly reviewed.

  • This case study searched two secondary school science teachers' faiths on experiments in science classes. For this study, scaled questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, structured and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Classroom activities were observed, and instructional plans and materials were collected. In addition, students of the two teachers' classes were interviewed with respect to their thoughts on the lessons. Data sources were analyzed inductively. The triangulation and the member checking guaranteed the validity of this study. As the results, the teachers' faiths on experiments were related to the constructivism, but the faiths were not in accord with their classroom practices. From these results, it was concluded that the teachers' misjudgments about the students' inquiry levels and unfit reorganizations of the experimental activities were the causes of the gap between the teachers' faiths on experiments and classroom practices.

  • We have developed of a criterion that would help to select and develop performance assessments in science education. There are six categories of a criterion: Fidelity, satisfaction, content validity, fairness & suitability, reliability & objectivity, and usability. There are the total of 25 sub-categories under the six categories. Five science educators evaluated the validity of the criterion. For reliability of the criterion, Kendall's tau-b was used. Eight science educators and elementary teachers evaluated three performance assessment tasks for the correspondence of the criterion. This study also discuss the implications of this criterion as well.

  • This study was conducted to develop a happiness index for Korean. 16 factors of happiness derived from both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis based on a nationwide sample of 1503 Korean adults were reclassified into 3 components of Alderfer's need theory. The LISREL was used to measure the weight of each happiness factor. The results showed that happiness index was functioned by a formula(Happiness=2.5*existence+2.5*relationship+5*growth). Applying this formula, the average happiness score for Korean was 57.71. It was also demonstrated that the degree of happiness differed according to individual's gender, region, and income. Men was happier than women, while there was no significant difference among ages. As far as the region concerned, those who live in Seoul and Daejeon were happier than the others. People who earn over 2,500,000 won per month were happier than the others in terms of economic status. Finally, the result of the discriminant function analysis revealed that individual or psychological growth factor was more important than existence and relationship factors. Based on these significant research findings, practical implications and future research directions were discussed.

  • This study examines recent trends in income inequality among the elderly in Korea. Aggregate income inequality trends are explained by examining evidence from inequality index decomposition by population subgroup and by income source. Data come from Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS). The results are as follows. First, elderly income inequality increased from 1999 to 2002, and then decreased until 2008. Second, household composition changes appear to have disequalizing influence. The proportion of elderly people who are economically dependent on non-elderly family member or living with adult children has declined. Equalizing influence of private transfers also decreased between 2002 and 2008. These results indicate that the redistributive role of family has weakened over time. Third, the improvement of education level and changing occupational structure among the elderly household head contributed to increase in elderly income inequality. Fourth, earning's factor share has declined steadily, and the diminishing role of earnings provides equalizing influence on elderly income inequality from 2002 to 2008. Fifth, the impact of recent expansion of social insurance has changed over time. Inequality contribution of social insurance income increased from 1999 to 2002, and then decreased from 2002 to 2008.

  • In this paper, a distributed beamforming problem is considered in an amplify-and-forward (AF) wireless relay network consist of multiple source-destination pairs and relaying nodes. To exploit degree of freedom of the number of beamformers, in the first step, we proposed that the sources transmit their signals through orthogonal channels. During the second step, the relays transmit their received signals multiplied by complex weights to amplify and compensate for phase changes introduced by the backward channels through one common channel. The optimal beamforming vectors are obtained through minimization of the total relay transmit power while the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) at the destinations are above certain thresholds to meet a quality of services (QoSs) level. In the numerical example, it is shown that the proposed scheme needs less transmit power for moderate network data rates than other schemes, such as space division multiplexing or time-division multiplexing scheme.

  • Referring expressions are natural language constructions used to identify particular objects within a scene. In this paper, we propose a new deep neural network model for referring expression comprehension. The proposed model finds out the region of the referred object in the given image by making use of the rich information about the referred object itself, the context object, and the relationship with the context object mentioned in the referring expression. In the proposed model, the object matching score and the relationship matching score are combined to compute the fitness score of each candidate region according to the structure of the referring expression sentence. Therefore, the proposed model consists of four different sub-networks: Language Representation Network(LRN), Object Matching Network (OMN), Relationship Matching Network(RMN), and Weighted Composition Network(WCN). We demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art results for comprehension on three referring expression datasets.

  • In this paper, we propose a system architecture and methodology based on cyber kill chain and MITRE ATT&CK for experiment analysis on cyber warfare simulation. Threat analysis is possible by applying various attacks that have actually occurred with continuous updates to reflect newly emerging attacks. In terms of cyber attack and defense, the current system(AS-IS) and the new system(TO-BE) are analyzed for effectiveness and quantitative results are presented. It can be used to establish proactive cyber COA(Course of Action) strategy, and also for strategic decision making. Through a case study, we presented the usability of the system architecture and methodology proposed in this paper. The proposed method will contribute to strengthening cyber warfare capabilities by increasing the level of technology for cyber warfare experiments.

  • The research of occupational injury for safety and health is a comparatively recent occurrence. As labor activities took place regarding to employee concerns in industrial uprising, human resources health was tried to enhanced as a labor safety subject. Noticing that traditional statistics approach has limitations in learning future forecasting and major factors causing occupational injuries in each industry, Korean Government initiated a quantitative systematic simulation model project to analyze how the annual injury rate has been dropped and stays in a level for recent years. From this motivation and the project, system dynamics models have been developed to explain the mechanisms for reducing annual injury rate, and the mechanisms quantitatively. The main cause effects for the reduction of annual injury rate were due to the government driven investment on safety facilities. In overall viewpoint the gain achievable from these efforts has been reached a saturated level. However, it could reduce the annual injury rate if you chose the industry and size carefully. The model for forecasting, major injury factors, safety budget and allocation are introduced and analyzed, and Analyzing occupational injury related factors can also reduce employee injury and disease related costs, including medical care, quit, and disability assistance costs.

  • The effect of real exchange rate changes on trade balance is called the J-curve effect. That is, after real depreciation, the trade balance will deteriorate in the short run and improve in the long run. Specially, import and export prices respond with little or no decline in volume. Assuming a zero initial trade balance and dominance of the exporter currency in invoicing trade contracts, the trade balance continues to deteriorate in the medium term. Over time, the relative price-induced volume effect comes to dominate the price effect and the trade balance improves. This pattern of the trade balance adjustment is commonly referred to as the J-curve effect. This study examines the effects of changes in the exchange rate on the Korean port trade balance to China. The empirical results indicate that whilst there is J-curve effect in the short-run, but in the long-run, the real depreciation of the Korean won has positive impact on port trade balance to China.
