  • The aim of this study was to analyze factors related to xerostomia in adults aged 30 years and over. The data were analyzed using the t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis in the SPSS version 12.0 program. The results were as follow. 1. The respondents who were older than 51 years old, unemployed and had less than 3 million won of average monthly income were more aware of xerostomia (p<0.05). 2. The respondents who answered poor and moderate for their general and oral health and the group with duplicate medication and comorbidity were more aware of xerostomia (p<0.05). 3. The respondents that had problems in chewing, communication, ordinary activities and complained of pain discomfort and suffered from anxiety depression were more aware of xerostomia (p<0.001). 4. The respondents that answered frequent dryness on their skin, eyes, lips, and nasal mucosa were more aware of xerostomia (p<0.001). 5. Xerostomia showed highest correlation with quality of life ($\beta$=0.436) followed by the number of medications ($\beta$=0.239), sense of entire body dryness ($\beta$=0.200), feeling of hopelessness ($\beta$=0.160) and number of oral mucosa disease symptoms ($\beta$=0.099) (p<0.05). According to the results of the study, xerostomia may cause deterioration in quality of life. Thus, it is advised to improve the patient management system among dental professions to prevent various complications caused by xerostomia and conduct regular health education on the cause and management method of xerostomia.

  • There is tremendous variability in the ways patients present with taste problems. Because of complex and multifactorial etiological background, it is not simple to evaluate patients with taste disorders. Accurate assessment of patients' status by prudent, thorough history taking and symptom analysis is the most essential for exact diagnosis of taste disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with taste problems as a primary complaint. Consecutive series of 50 patients (12 males and 38 females, mean age $53.6\;{\pm}\;14.7$ years) were included for the present study. All subjects were requested to complete a comprehensive questionnaire. Clinical evaluation procedures included oral examination, interview, questionnaire analysis, panoramic radiography, blood test and measurement of salivary flow rate. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Among the patients, 36 patients (72%) complained of oral mucosal pain or burning sensation. Of these patients, 18 patients (36%) were diagnosed as burning mouth syndrome. 2. Nineteen patients (38%) complained of subjective oral dryness. The flow rate of unstimulated whole saliva was less than 0.1 mL/min in 14 patients (28%) and 17 (34%) had a stimulated whole salivary flow rate of less than 0.5 mL/min. 3. Among the types of taste disorders, hypogeusia, the most frequently reported, was found in 25 patients (50%), dysgeusia in 18 patients (36%), phantogeusia in 15 patients (30%), hypergeusia in 10 patients (20%), and ageusia in 5 patients (10%). Nineteen patients (38%) reported more than one type of taste disorder and the most frequent combination was dysgeusia + hypogeusia (n=6, 12%). 4. Based on data from the medical and dental histories and examinations, the patients were assigned to 12 probable causal categories. Taste disorders due to oral mucosal diseases and idiopathic taste disorder were the most frequent (n=9; 18%, each), followed by psychogenic taste disorder (n=8; 16%), drug-induced taste disorder (n=7; 14%), and taste disorder due to dry mouth (n=6; 12%). These 5 categories of taste disorder accounted for 78% of all cases in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between first visits and the recurred time of TMD patients about the number of visits, the treatment plans, the symptoms and the results after the conservative treatments. This could lead us to assess the prognoses of TMDs treated conservatively. We investigated 54 patients who have visited the Department of Oral Medicine in PNUH from 1991 to 2001, diagnosed as TMDs and treated conservatively with medications, physical therapies and splints. The treatments were terminated since the subjects have shown much improvements and resumed when TMDs recurred from 1992 to 2002. We researched the diagnoses, symptoms, the number of visits, the treatment plans and the results comparing the time before and after the treatments were carried out and following are the results. 1. Both the primary and the recurred groups improved after having been treated conservatively. 2. Both the primary and the recurred groups showed no differences in pains and MCOs when they first visited though the noises and LOMs turned out to be more serious in primary group. 3. Both the primary and the recurred groups had no differences in pains, noises, LOMs, MCOs when the treatments were over. 4. The results of treatments were not affected by treatment plans, sex, diagnoses in both primary and recurred groups. 5. Most of the patents tended to visit less than 10 times in recurred patients.

  • Most patients suffering from TMD appear to have unsatisfactory masticatory function and compromised values of bite force. The purposes of this study were to investigate and compare bite force between affected and unaffected sides of patients with unilateral TMD and to evaluate its relation with duration of TMD. 42 patients with unilateral TMD, from Department of Oral Medicine, Dankook University Dental Hospital, were selected for this study. The ratio of men to women was 9:33 and their mean age of $27.2{\pm}10.4$ years. The bite forces were measured over both canines (for anterior bite force) and $1^{st}$ molars (for posterior bite force) using a bite force recorder while all the subjects were asked to clench successively for 3 seconds not until pain was felt. They were compared with those measured from bilateral TMD patients(N=6, M:F=1:5, mean age: $23.0{\pm}27.3$ years). The unilateral TMD patients were divided into time groups according to duration of TMD on the basis of 1 and 6 months, respectively. Paired and unpaired t-tests were used for statistical analysis. Unilateral TMD patients in this study showed that the affected sides had significantly lower bite force than the unaffected sides(force difference of about 7-8 kgf, p<0.05) while there was no significant sides difference in the bilateral patients. Nor did bite force on the affected sides reveal significant difference between unilateral and bilateral TMD patients. With regards to TMD duration, there was significant difference between the patients with TMD < 6 months and $\geq$ 6 months (p<0.05) while no significant difference existed between < 1 month and $\geq$ 1 month. The results of this study indicated that unilateral TMD patients can exhibit more reduced bite force on the affected sides compared with that on the unaffected sides and that bite force on the unaffected sides might be deteriorated more as longer did TMD last.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the factors related to self-reported halitosis. This study performed a questionnaire survey, targeting at 450 adults who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Main results of this study were as followings. Relationships between socio-demographic characteristics and halitosis showed no significant difference. Relationships between subjective oral health and halitosis, the groups that were treated dental prosthesis, aware of periodontal disease and dry mouth symptoms reported more halitosis (p<0.05). The group that brushed teeth less than twice a day, did not brush teeth after having a snack, and had frequent sweet treat reported more halitosis (p<0.05). The group that more experienced limitation, discomfort, discomfort reported more halitosis (p<0.05). Based on the results derived as above, the self-reported halitosis was shown to be related to periodontal disease, dry mouth, oral hygiene care and quality of life. Therefore, it is considered that preventing periodontal disease and oral dryness as well as reinforcing the oral hygiene care will contribute to prevention of halitosis and enhancement of quality of life.

  • This study is conducted to confirm a correlation between psychological health and self-rated oral health on. 3,591 people aged from 19 to 55 were studied through the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. Self-rated oral health risk in relation to psychological health and 95% confidence interval are calculated through multi-variate regression analysis, and the results were as in the following. Self-rated oral health OR was the most when subjects had felt stressed. Toothache experience, OR was the most when subjects had suffered depression more than 2-weeks straight. In terms of mastication problem, OR was the most when subjects had had psychological consultation experience. In terms of TMJ symptom experience, OR was the most when subjects had suffered depression more than 2-weeks straight. In terms of talk problem, OR level was particularly high when subjects had had psychological consultation experience. Therefore, daily stress, depressed conditions, and psychological consultation experience have a correlation with self-rated oral health. developing a oral health promotion program considering psychological health would help those two domains.
