  • This study was carried out in order to offer basic data for preventing halitosis by understanding about the factors related to self-awareness of halitosis and about the relationship with stress and compulsion targeting students for the Department of Dental Hygiene. As a result of research, the whole subjects were indicated to be 1.76 points for the mean in stress, 1.62 points for the mean in compulsion, and 1.84 points for the mean in self-awareness of halitosis. The group of feeling the tongue to be white and the inside of the mouth to be sticky in own symptom inside the mouth was indicated to be 2.02 points(p=0.000) for stress and 2.00 points(p=0.000) for self-awareness of halitosis. The group of often feeling a sense of oral dryness was indicated to be 2.23 points(p=0.000) for stress, 1.95 points(p=0.000) for compulsion, and 1.89 points(p=0.046) for self-awareness of halitosis. The self-awareness of halitosis stood at r=0.133 with compulsion, thereby having indicated slight positive correlation. Stress and compulsion showed high positive correlation with r=0.425. Accordingly, there is a need of infusing recognition through steady education as a dental hygienist who will have interest in emotional factor along with grasping diverse causes for halitosis, and who will be in charge of a future patients' halitosis.

  • Objectives: Stress is a psychological reaction to stimuli such as anxiety or threat felt by a person either physically or mentally when placed in a difficult situation. Although a relationship between stress and dry mouth has been reported, it remains understudied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between stress and subjective dry mouth among the elderly living in a rural region. Methods: A total of 214 people aged ${\geq}60years$ living in a rural area were recruited with an informed consent for a cross-sectional analysis. Information about stress and subjective dry mouth was obtained by an interview survey with a constructed questionnaire. Data on other potential confounding factors (including oral factors) such as socio-demographic data, health-related behaviors, the number of remaining teeth, and subjective chewing ability were also gathered at the same time. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship of stress and dry mouth using SPSS. Results: The Crude odds ratio (OR) of stress awareness affecting subjective dry mouth was 2.59 (95% confidence interval: 1.43-4.68). After adjusting for sex, education, income, smoking, and alcohol intake, the adjusted OR was 2.52 (95% confidence interval: 1.30-4.87) which was statistically significant. Conclusions: Elderly people who were stressed had an approximately 2-fold increase in experiencing subjective dry mouth when compared to their stress-free counterparts.

  • Objectives: This study performed a comparative evaluation of the effects of oil pulling on the periodontal health of smokers. Methods: The experimental (15 subjects) and control (15 subjects) were provided coconut oil and distilled water, respectively. We evaluated the pocket depth (≥4 mm), bleeding on exploration, and Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index in both groups following the interventions. Clinical parameters were assessed at baseline, after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks. Dry mouth and oral health-related quality of life were evaluated at baseline and after 8 weeks. Results: Bleeding on exploring in the control group decreased from 26.17 to 18.33 and from 26.07 to 12.53 in the experimental group (p=0.030), with significant differences in measurement time (p<0.001), and the interaction between group and measurement time (p=0.002). The PHP index in the control group decreased from 24.50 to 16.17 and from 24.00 to 9.83 in the experimental group (p=0.027), with significant differences in measurement time (p<0.001), and the interaction between group and measurement time (p=0.001). Furthermore, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in dry mouth (p<0.001) and a significant increase in oral health-related quality of life (p=0.025). Conclusions: The coconut oil intervention positively affected the periodontal health of smokers.

  • Objective : This study was designed to investigate the correlation between Qi movement stagnation condition, stress level and xerostomia in halitosis patients. Methods : Ninety-nine halitosis patients visiting the Halitosis Clinic in the hospital of Oriental medicine, Kyung Hee University from January, 2010 to May, 2010 were recruited. The subjects were assessed on their stress levels(based on the Stress Response Inventory), xerostomia symptoms(based on the 8-item Visual Analogue Scale xerostomia questionnaire), and Qi movement stagnation(氣鬱) condition(one of the subcategories in the Qi, blood and water pattern identification(氣血水辨證)). Salivary functions were evaluated using the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate measurements. Results : Compared to the non-Qi movement stagnation group(Qi movement stagnation pattern identification score < 30), the confirmed Qi movement stagnation group(Qi movement stagnation pattern identification score $\geqq$ 30) showed higher levels of xerostomia and stress. In the regression analysis, the Qi movement stagnation condition and stress levels showed a significant correlation. Furthermore, the Qi movement stagnation condition and stress levels each displayed significant correlations with xerostomia. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that stress and Qi movement stagnation condition contribute to xerostomia symptoms in halitosis patients. Considering the correlation found between the Qi movement stagnation and stress, this study suggests a novel methodology in treating xerostomia, halitosis, and other stress-related disorders through the Qi movement stagnation-related approach.

  • Purpose: In terminally ill cancer patients, accurate prediction of survival is necessary for clinical and ethical reasons, especially in helping to avoid harm, discomfort and inappropriate therapies and in planning specific care strategies. The aim of the study was to investigate prognostic factor of dying patients. Methods: We enrolled the terminal cancer patients from Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital from 2004 until their death. We observed symptoms shown in dying patients and assess 17 common symptoms shown in terminally ill cancer patients, performance status, pain and analgesic use. Results: Average period from hospitalization to death was 11.7 days. The most important prognostic factor is performance status (KPS), average KPS at enrollment is 48% and at last 48 hours is 25%. Physical symptoms that have significant prognostic importance are poor oral intake, weakness, constipation, decreased Karnofsky performance status, bed sore, edema, jaundice, dry mouth, dyspnea. Dying patients showed markedly decreased systolic blood pressure, cyanosis, drowsiness, abnormal respiration, death rattle frequently at 48 hours before death. Conclusion: If we assess the symptoms more carefully, we can predict the more accurate prognosis. The communication about the prognostic information will influence the personal therapeutic decision and specific care planning.
