Relationships between Dietary Behaviors with Smoking, Drinking Situations and Subjective Health Status of University Students (대학생의 식행동, 흡연, 음주실태와 주관적 건강상태와의 관련성)

  • This study aims at investigate dietary behaviors, smoking and drinking status of university students depending on their gender and residential patterns, and analyzing relationships with their subjective health status. The subjects of this study was 538 university students in Metropolitan areas from May 10-31, 2010. Data were analyzed with chi-square test, fisher's exact test, t-test and stepwise multiple regression SPSS 12.0. Male students higher frequency on the intake of eggs, meats and carbonated drinks than female students. The group residing at one's own house showed higher frequency on the intake of beans, fruits and milk than the self-boarding group or other groups(p<0.05), while preferring sweet taste the most. Male students were significantly higher than female students in the amount of smoking and drinking(p<0.05). They had positive recognition on their health conditions as they have higher frequency on the intake of potatoes, seaweeds, green tea and milk with less frequency on the intake of eggs, fast foods and drinking amount. Accordingly, it was considered necessary to have continuous education on nutrition and social supports to prevent their dietary behaviors from leaning on convenience or preference.

Relationship between Smoking, Drinking and Periodontal Pocket Formation of Patient was Visited at College Scaling Center (일부 대학 스켈링센터 방문환자의 흡연 및 음주와 치주낭 형성의 관련성)

  • The purpose of this study was to obtain basic data on the relationing between smoking, drinking and periodontal pocket formation. There was no nationwide epidemiologic study on periodontal diseases and smoking, drinking in korea. 177 adults aged 20 and older were recruited the study subjects. Data for smoking, drinking and general characteristics were collected by questions. Periodontal pocket formation was measured greater than 3 mm by probing. Sectional arch numbers of periodontal pocket formation by sex, marriage status and drink yes or no were no statististically difference. Sectional arch numbers of periodontal pocket formation by ages were statististically to increase in proportion to age. Sectional arch numbers of periodontal pocket formation by economic status were statististically to increase in proportion to high economic status. Sectional arch numbers of periodontal pocket formation by smoke yes or no were statististically to increase more smokers than non-smokers. According to regression analysis, periodontal pocket formation was influenced by age, economic status and smoke yes or no.

Association between Oral Health Behavior and Oral Health Status in Adolescent (청소년의 구강건강행태와 구강보건상태와의 관련요인)

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to improve cognitive oral healthcare care by analyzing the correlation between oral health behavior and oral health status Korean adolescents. The subjects were 65,528 youths in 798 schools monitored in the Twelfth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 2016. Methods : The general characteristics consisted of 9 items including sex, grade, and academic performance. The academic performance and economic status were restructured into "upper, middle, lower". Subjective health perception and subjective oral health perception were reorganized as "health", "normal", "no health". The sub-areas of oral health behavior include five times of daily brushing during the day yesterday. The number of brushing times was "0", "1-2", "3", "more than 4" After lunch at school, brushing was restructured as "always," "sometimes," "not." The oral health status subscale consisted of 6 items including tooth breakage and toothache at the time of eating. Result : Tooth fracture(43.7 %), pain in mastication(43.7 %), tooth tingling(47.4 %), gum pain and bleeding(45 %), pain in buccal mucosa(43.8 %) and halitosis(46.6 %) were rare in adolescent having healthy oral health status cognitively(P<.001). Nosymptom adolescents without dental sealant showed low tooth fracture(0.64 times), pain in mastication(0.67 times), tooth tingling(0.59 times), gum pain and bleeding(0.84 times), pain in buccal mucosa(0.76 times), and halitosis(0.90 times). Nosymptom adolescents without scaling showed low tooth fracture(0.88 times), pain in mastication(1.03 times), tooth tingling(0.82 times), gum pain and bleeding(0.64 times), pain in buccal mucosa(0.70 times) and halitosis(0.82 times). Conclusion : This study revealed that oral health status is correlated with oral health behavior. Development of educational media and program, and aggressive promotion required to establish oral health Korean adolescent.

A Survey on Related of College Women's Smoking experience in a Certain Area and their Awareness of Oral Health (일부지역 여대생들의 흡연경험과 구강건강인식도와의 관련성)

  • This study is designed to take a look at college women's understanding of the actual condition of their smoking and the harmfulness of their smoking, to make an analysis of smoking factors affecting oral health and to present basic materials for the development of oral health education programs. Self-administered questionnaires were given to the subjects from May 22 through June 2, 2003. The results were as follows. 1. 71.7 percent of the subjects said that they had no experience. 16.7 percent of them said that they had had experience. 11.6 percent of them said that they are now smoking. The oftener they don't live with their parents, the more monthly money they had, the more smoking experience they had(p<0.001). 2. 37.4 percent of the subjects said that they brush their teeth three times a day. And 52.2 percent of them said that they brush their teeth after smoking. 3. The rate of using dental floss and interdental brushes accounts for 46.5%, and the ratio of having tartar scaled from their teeth accounts for 45.5%. There was no significant difference in accordance with smoking or nonsmoking. 4. The subjects with no smoking experience(76.0%) thought that they had better teeth condition than their counterparts(64.3%). But there was no significant difference. 5. 56.5 percent of the subjects responded that their dental condition was related to their smoking, but 43.5 percent of them said that it was not.

Influential Factors to the Oral Hygiene Behavior and Perceived Oral Health Status of the Elderly (노인의 주관적 구강건강상태 및 구강보건행태에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a set of fundamental data for the oral hygiene education for the elderly as a result of the survey on the oral hygiene and subjective oral health of the elderly in an aged society. For this purpose, 269 elders who dwelled in Gyeongsangbuk-do region were randomly selected in an arbitrary selection process, followed by a survey on their oral hygiene and health. The collected data were coded and processed by using SPSS 15.0 software. As for the analysis of the data, the general characteristics and the basic items concerning the management of the oral health were analyzed for their frequency and percentages, while the general characteristics and the awareness on the oral health were processed with Chi-square validation to show a set of results as follows; Firstly, among the items on the oral health, the satisfaction on the current condition of their oral health was below average. Secondly, concerning the oral hygienic behaviors, the majority of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth twice a day. And, as for the brushing methods, the largest number of the samples answered that they were brushing their teeth in a 'horizontal direction'. Thirdly, they reported they were having difficulties in getting dental treatments. The implications of this study are that it is necessary to provide sound oral health education to them to correct the inappropriate oral hygienic behaviors.

Correlation between oral-related appearance satisfaction and subjective oral health status of college students (대학생의 구강관련 외모만족도와 주관적 구강건강 상태의 관련성)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine correlation between subjective oral health status and oral-related appearance satisfaction of college students. 100 college students at a college located in Gyeonggi-do participated in the survey, oral examinations, and self-rated oral hygiene management ability tests. The data was then analyzed accordingly. Methods: Frequency test and chi-square statistical analysis were conducted on general characteristics and subjective oral health status, and SAS version 9.2 was used. Results: As a result of this study, students' subjective perceptions about oral health had positive correlation with oral-related appearance(p <0.05). It is noteworthy that those who responded on 'satisfactory' oral health status indicated that 16% 'unsatisfactory', 28% 'average' and 68% 'satisfactory' on oral-related appearance. Students' self-rated oral hygiene management ability and irregular teeth conditions were also found relevant in causing discomfort in interpersonal activities, whereas students responded 'satisfactory', 0.00%; 'average', 31.82%; 'unsatisfactory' 68.18% (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that oral-related appearance can have an impact on oral health status and that oral-related appearance can be a contributing factor to improve oral health status and therefore results in promotion of general health. In the future, further research should be considered about perception on oral-related appearance, oral health status and any resulting behavior changes.

  • Purpose: Recently our country is rapidly aging population is growing. In the oral cavity of the elderly status of oral health-related quality of life to evaluate any impact. Methods: The survey used structured self administered questionnaires from April to May in 2011 in Daejeon and Chungcheong provinces to 277 people, analysis of the general characteristics of a frequency analysis method, the difference between the quality of life T/F test, whether oral self-according to the quality of life healthy oral health effects of the multiple regression analysis. Results: Award comes on the number of residual value, lower age all the more, smaller monthly income was small, but significant difference between them was no difference between gender. Residual value according to the number of differences in the quality of life of physical pain upper, physical disability, the lower the physical pain, physical disability, psychological disability were significant differences in degradation. Depending on oral maxillary prosthesis fitted to physical pain, psychological discomfort, physical disability, the lower the functional limitation, physical pain, there was a significant difference in physical disability. Conclusion: Status of the oral cavity of the elderly factors affecting the quality of life remaining in the lower dimensions, upper and lower prosthetics, self-aware state of oral health in order to improve the quality of life of elderly oral health education to be strengthened to increase the residual value, reducing their own prosthetic perceived oral health is health, so they feel it should be for the development of health education programs for the elderly should be.

Full mouth rehabilitation of the intellectually disabled patient with collapsed bite using partial removable dental prosthesis: a case report (교합이 붕괴된 지적장애 환자의 국소의치 수복증례)

  • Intellectual disability is an imperfect disorder in which mental development is permanently retarded and development of intellectual ability is inadequate. Having intellectual disabilities makes it difficult to handle their own work and adapt to social life. For this reason, it is difficult to hygienically manage the patient's oral condition, multiple caries are easily observed, and the periodontal disease incidence rate is high. The patient in this case is a 33-year-old female with a mental retardation first grade who had a problem with meals. In first visit, Patients had decreased occlusal vertical dimension and posterior bite collapse due to periodontitis and multiple caries. This case reports a satisfactory functional and esthetic results by reconstructing occlusion using partial removable dental prosthesis.

The relationship between dementia and the number of remaining tooth of the elderly women on senior center (경로당 여성 노인들의 치매와 잔존 치아 수와의 관련성)

  • Recently, with the population growth of elderly people, concerns about oral health related to the quality of life of the elderly are increasing. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between the elderly women divided into dementia, suspected dementia, healthy groups and the remaining teeth of them. Total 177 elderly women of over 60 years old, visiting on senior center in some community dwelling, were assessed for oral condition and their cognitive function with MMSE score. All the collected data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test, and multiful logistic regression using SPSS. Multiful logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship of dementia according to MMSE score and remaining teeth, and 95% confidence intervals were computed. Odds ratio(OR) of the number of remaining teeth 0-10 was 3.43 (95% confidence interval: 1.382-8.997). This study showed significant difference and the relationship between dementia according to MMSE score and the number of remaining teeth of the elderly women.

Survey of Unmet Dental Treatment Needs among Adult Disabled (장애인의 미충족 치과치료 실태조사)

  • This study analyzed the rate of unmet dental care service for the disabled who were judged to require the dentistry due to oral health-related problems and those reasons, and also examined the oral health status according to the unmet dentistry. 375 subjects, who were 19 years or older and completed oral health examination and a survey, among 444 responded positive of disability registration after participation in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES), were analyzed. Disability type was classified into 6 kinds(physical disability, brain lesions, sensory defect, developmental disability, mental disorder, endocrine disorder). Participants had 128 of their dental care needs unmet when it was required. 'Financial burden' was the main reason, with the subject of 49.2%, followed by 'lower on the priority scale' were 18.0%. The high frequency and progression permanent teeth caries experiencs and periodontal status of their dental disease were confirmed. In availability aspect of dentistry resources, it is required for using dentistry service smoothly through providing sufficient proper dental care service comparing with the number of the disabled.
