  • Many of antimicrobial components used in the mouthwash have disadvantages such as coloring of periodontal tissue and homing sensation. To find the more biocompatible antimicrobial agent, we have screened the 2,125 kinds of natural plant extracts obtained from by the Plant Extract Bank (Daejeon, Korea). The antimicrobial activity was determined by spectrophotometric growth inhibition assay for the major dental pathogens. For the Porphyromonas gingivalis, 19 plant extracts had an antimicrobial activity, 17 plant extracts for the Prevotella intermedia, 45 plant extracts for the Haemophilus actinomycetemcomitans and 85 plant extracts for the Streptococcus mutans. Among these effective extracts, 8 kind of natural plant extracts had an antimicrobial activity for more than 3 species of dental pathogens. In our experiment, Cudrania tricuspidata, Morus bombycis and Mallotus japonicas have antibacterial effects on the all kinds of major dental pathogens. Therefore these plant extracts have a possibility to be a candidate for major antibacterial components in dental products.

  • Dental caries is a multifactorial disease influenced by interactions between teeth, biofilm, dietary factors, and various biological, behavioral, sociocultural, and genetic factors. Recent research has shown that dental caries results from dysbiosis, an imbalance in the oral microbial community, shifting the concept from an infectious disease to a non-communicable disease (NCD). Dental caries shares similarities with other chronic NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, as they all relate to dietary intake, lifestyle habits, and environmental factors. Considering the high prevalence of dental caries and its impact on people's health and quality of life, it is important to understand dental caries as an NCD and develop effective oral health management strategies. Ecological prevention methods and efficient public health policies should be provided to reduce risk factors associated with dental caries.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in low biofouling coatings for various industrial applications including precious metal and jewelry applications. Contaminations including cells and bacteria of the metallic substrates (i.e., accessories, earring, and piercings) may irritate the contacted tissue surfaces or induce an abnormal reaction. In this study, catechol-conjugated polyethylene glycol (PEG-C) was synthesized as low bio-fouling coating materials inspired by mussel-adhesion. PEG-C-coated copper-zinc alloy surfaces showed excellent cell viability and significant inhibitions of protein and cell adhesions to metal surfaces. Thus, PEG-C coating methods and PEG-C-coated metallic substrates can be usefully exploited for versatile industrial applications, particularly for precious metal and jewelry industries.

  • This study was undertaken in order to get biomorphometric significance of oral candidiasis as a diagnostic method. Specimen was collected from 23 oral candidiasis outpatients(10 male and 13 female) of dental infirmary of U.C.L.A. Health Center from Sept. 1,1981 to Aug. 1,1982. The results were as follows : 1. The male-female ratio on oral candidiasis was 5/6.5. 2. The mean age of male was 42.8 and the mean age of female was 60.1. 3. The nucleocytoplasmic ratio of outmost epithelial cell layer was 0.60 ane (the nuclecytoplasmic ratio of)basal cell layer was 0.87. The difference was significant.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of an 810-nm infrared diode laser with indocyanine green (ICG) against Staphylococcus aureus on sandblasted, large grit, and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces, comparing its effectiveness with alternative chemical decontamination modalities. Materials and Methods: Biofilms of S. aureus ATCC 25923 were cultured on SLA titanium disks for 48 hours. The biofilms were divided into five treatment groups: control, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), tetracycline (TC), ICG, and 810-nm infrared diode laser with ICG (ICG-PDT). After treatment, colony-forming units were quantified to assess surviving bacteria, and viability was confirmed through confocal laser-scanning microscope (CLSM) imaging. Results: All treated groups exhibited a statistically significant reduction in S. aureus (P < 0.05), with notable efficacy in the CHX, TC, and ICG-PDT groups (P < 0.01). While no statistical difference was observed between TC and CHX, the ICG-PDT group demonstrated superior bacterial reduction. CLSM images revealed a higher proportion of dead bacteria stained in red within the ICG-PDT groups. Conclusion: Within the limitations, ICG-PDT effectively reduced S. aureus biofilms on SLA titanium surfaces. Further investigations into alternative decontamination methods and the clinical impact of ICG-PDT on peri-implant diseases are warranted.

  • Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell density-dependent communication mechanism between bacteria through small signaling molecules. When the number of QS signaling molecules reaches a threshold, they are transported back into the cells or recognized by membrane-bound receptors, triggering gene expression which affects various phenotypes including bioluminescence, virulence, adhesion, and biofilm formation. These phenotypes are beneficial for bacterial survival in harsh environments. This review summarizes the application of QS inhibitors for control of biofilm formation and virulence expression of periodontal pathogens.

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory joint disorder characterized by sacroiliitis, spondylitis and enthesitis. Patients suffering from AS may also have extra-articular symptoms, such as uveitis, bowl disease, heart, lung, skin, bone and kidney involvement, but vary widely in severity and prevalence. Facial manifestation of AS include eye involvement and temporomandibular joint involvement. In this study, a case of an AS that mimicked dental pain was presented.
