  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for healthy and effective dental management by providing the knowledge and information on periodontal health promotion as well as high dental health interests, by doing a comparative analysis of the effect of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills of people in their 20s on periodontal health status assessment, to find periodontal disease early and prevent it targeting 130 adults in their 20s who visited dental hygienic lab for comprehensive dental hygiene care and treatment from September 25 to October 30. The data collected used SPSS 18.0. To present the technical characteristics of the data, frequency was used and chi-squared test through cross-analysis was conducted to investigate dental health knowledge and the relevance between the variables of oral hygiene management skills of general characteristics. To examine periodontal health status assessment, t-test and One-way ANOVA and Turkey post-hoc tests were carried out at the 5% significance level. Regression analysis was performed to investigate the impact of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills on dental health status assessment. As a result of this study, as dental health knowledge on tooth brushing of people in their 20s increased, plaque index reduced, as dental health knowledge on periodontal disease increased, plaque index reduced. Dental health status assessment according to a total number of times tooth brushing, tooth brushing methods, whether to use dental hygiene devices, smoking status, drinking frequency per week, whether to have oral health education was statistically significant. To improve the level of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills, oral health education should be strengthened as well as the publicity through the media to have the information on oral health and learn it.

The survey was conducted on 191 elderly people aged 65 and over living in Chungbuk from January 6, 2020 to February 7, 2020, and for data analysis, χ2-test, t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, logistic regression analysis were performed. As a result, it was found that the quality of life as measured by GOHAI increased when they had oral health education experience, had a high level of oral health knowledge and oral health education request level, and had regular oral examinations. Based on the above results, in order to improve the quality of life related to oral health of the elderly, it is necessary to prepare policies to increase the participation rate by developing and continuously expanding opportunities for oral health education in various ways.

Children from case group were participated in learner-centered oral health education, while those from control group were participated in instructor-led oral health education. Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) at each groups were measured before oral health education, after then, oral health education of two types at each groups were separately conducted during 1-hour, 2 times. Learner-centered oral health education adapted the systematic desensitization (Tell-Show-Do) was conducted for case groups. Instructor-led oral health education was performed by using the presentation file (PPT). The change of Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) were compare between case and control groups to evaluate the effect of learner-centered teaching type. After oral health education, DAS of the case and control groups at the baseline were 9.61 and 11.14, respectively, and the average DAS decline of case and control groups after oral health education were 2.48 and 0.55, respectively. These findings show that a learner-centered teaching type is an effective oral health program to reduce of dental anxiety in childhood.

  • This study aims to analyze the relationship with oral health status through oral examinations, microorganism tests, and surveys of college students and present basic data necessary for the development of oral health education programs to prevent. Results of students who did not receive brushing education showed high motile activities of microorganism, and there was a significant relationship in which students with a large amount of microorganism subjectively felt more tooth pain. Symptoms of halitosis were greater in the DT, there were differences in the type of bacteria and the amount of bacteria in the MT, and oral health was worse if oral aids were not used in the DMFT index. Therefore, it was confirmed that oral health behavior, subjective oral health awareness, and the amount of microorganism had a significant relationship with oral health status. It will be necessary to develop and share and spread customized oral health education media for each life cycle.

Also we examined the contribution factors to subjective awareness of halitosis by denture condition. A total sample of 103 elderly people were answered questionnaire and all collected survey data were processed for data analyses. Based on general characteristics, the study of the halitosis showed higher score which is older age, oral health attitude, and living together. The result showed that the use of denture, dental intelligent quotient (dental IQ) and type of denture were significantly correlated with halitosis. These results indicated that halitosis was affected by denture and oral health index. According to these findings, it is necessary to develop and apply the oral health promotion program which is include the management of halitosis especially for elderly person.

The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The mean DMFS index of the Korean senior citizens was 26.62, and their average DMFT index was 6.76. Their mean FS-T index was 21.51. 2. Out of the demographic characteristics of the Korean elderly people, education made statistically significant differences to the DMFS(p<0.05) and FS-T(p<0.001) indexes, and whether they worked or not made statistically significant differences to the DMFT(p<0.01), DMFS(0.001) and FS-T(0.001) indexes. There were no significant gaps according to gender, age and presence or absence of a spouse. 3. The oral health awareness of the Korean senior citizens(subjective oral health status, whether to need a dental treatment, concern for oral health and mastication) had no statistically significant relationship to their DMFS, DMFT and FS-T indexes. 4. Among the oral health behaviors of the Korean elderly people, whether they got a dental checkup over the past year made statistically significant differences to the DMFT(p<0.01), DMFS(p<0.001) and FS-T (p<0.001) indexes, and there were statistically significant gaps in the DMFT(p<0.010, FS-T(p<0.01) and DMFS(p<0.001) indexes according to yesterday's toothbrushing frequency. The time when they went to a dentist made a significant difference to the FS-T(p<0.01) index only.
