  • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the dental care utilization patterns and related factors of the rural residents. Methods: The data collected by interview and self-administered questionnaire survey of 524 peoples of Seongju county in Gyeongsanbuk-do. The summarized results are as follows. Results: The rate of persons who experienced the oral disease was 52.5% during 1 year and it was at most in the age group of 40-49. The rate of persons who had experienced the oral disease were investigated according to general characteristics, perception of oral health, being of regular treatment facility. Therefore the rate of persons who had experienced the oral disease was significantly higher the younger peoples, worse oral health status and being of the regular treatment source than the other groups. During 1 year period, 64.0% of the cases had treated the perceived oral disease, 36.0% did no action at all during last year. Among respondents, 49.4% had treated their oral disease at dental clinics, 8.0% had treated at community health center or subcenter and remains did not treated at all. The results of logistic regression analysis suggested that statistically significant factors in dental health care utilization were educational level, degree of pain, oral health status and regular treatment facility. Therefore the dental health care utilization rate was higher at groups with the high educational level, serious pain, better oral health status and being of the regular treatment source than other groups. 45.5% of the rural residents did not treat their oral disease immediately due to the no identified need, limitation of time(19.2%), economic limitation(19.2%), and geographical limitation(9.0%). Conclusions: In consideration of above findings, we may conclude that oral health community program to prevent oral diseases should be intensified, oral health education to raise oral health knowledge should be performed periodically.

  • This research studiedthe correlation between dental implant patients' oral hygiene behaviors and satisfaction. By doing so, this study seeks to provide the basic data for the development of diagonal and educational programs to improve implant prosthesis maintenance and satisfaction. The data was collected from January 7 to June 30, 2014, analyzed by SAS (ver 9.2) and for this research, 6 dental hospitals and clinics in Daegu, Busan and Jinju, South Korea were examined for their implant patients receiving treatment. As a result, a total of 266 sets of data were investigated herein to reach the following findings: 1. The survey on status of dental implant prosthesis use and maintenance knowledge found 1.41 on average out of the total score of 3. 2. In the survey on implant prosthesis maintenance after putting in, the dental scaling cycle was found to be 'none' (63.2%). 3. In the survey on implant use status and satisfaction with their implant prosthesis, the masticatory function (p=0.001) were found to be significantly higher in the group using such oral-hygiene goods. 4. In the correlation analysis among one's knowledge on dental implant maintenance, discomfort and satisfaction, it was found that the more they used oral-hygiene supplementary goods (${\beta}=0.095$), the more they had knowledge on implant maintenance (${\beta}=0.069$) and the more they experienced oral health education (${\beta}=0.032$), the higher their satisfaction levels were. It is deemed that, for enhanced satisfaction of dental implant patients, their maintenance behaviors need to be further improved through oral health educational programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the taste sensitivity in patients with oral mucosal diseases(Oral lichen planus(OLP), Recurrent apthous ulcer(RAU)) using electrogustometer. One hundred and seventy three subjects were included for the study and they were categorized into 2 groups(control 100, patient 73) and patient group was investigated in the Department of Oral Medicine, Pusan National University Hospital from April, 2005 until January, 2007. Control group was investigated in the clinics at Inchen Metroplitan city and Cheongju city from February to August, 2006. The electrical taste thresholds were measured by using an electrogustometer for the 4 different sites(tongue tip, tongue lateral, circumvallate papilla and soft palate) in oral cavity. The results were as follows ; 1. The electrical taste threshold in patient group was significantly decreased than that in the control group(p<0.001). 2. The electrical taste threshold, in terms of the chronicity and lesion multiplicity, was not significantly changed in patient group. 3. The electrical taste threshold was not significantly changed in Dexan only and Dexan+Prs combination treated group. 4. The electrical taste threshold, in terms of treatment progress(no response vs half response vs complete response), was not significantly changed. However subjective index which was determined by NAS(Numerical Analogy Scale) was significantly increased in no response group but significantly decreased in complete response group(p<0.001)

  • The prior purpose of this study is to introduce a optical biopsy and evaluate whether the optical biopsy, real-time, non-invasive technique, is a reliable tool to assess response to radiotherapy Four healthy volunteers, and four patients with inflammatory conditions of the oral cavity participated on the study. was obtained from each person enrolled in the study. Using FastEEM(Ercited Emission Matrix) as a optical biopsy tool, normal and tumor spectra are taken from the normal and the tumor regions. And then second optical biopsy are taken from the tumor regions in 4 patients with time delay at 7days.. Using a diagnostic algorithm, made by Gillenwater based on spectra excited at 337nm The Optical Biopsy turned out to be more suited for tumor diagnostic resulting in significant difference fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence intensity of cancerous tissue showed a higher position. The second fluorescence intensity of optical biopsy of cancerous oral tissue has more smaller than the first result. I conclude that optical biopsy, which technique don't need to remove tissue sample from body, and is a real time , and non-invasive measurement is a reliable tool to access to radiotherapy because FastEEM can do measure the variation of the tissue composition chemical, biological, and morphological after radiotherapy. Based on the fluorescence spectrum are taken from the optical biopsy in normal and tumor spectra as well as tumor spectra after 7days.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of stress on the relationship between oral health behaviors and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the elderly. We analyzed 8148 subjects aged 65 or older who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2015). All individuals were asked about their socioeconomic history, general health, and oral health behaviors (the frequency of tooth brushing, regular dental check-ups, and use of interdental cleaners). In the results, HRQOL was low in the elderly from a low socioeconomic class, or with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or poor oral health behaviors. A partial mediating effect from stress was confirmed on the relationship between oral health behaviors and HRQOL. In conclusion, HRQOL was associated with oral health behaviors, with a mediating effect from stress. Therefore, it is necessary that a convergence health promotion program should be planned with an oral health education program and a stress management program for the elderly.

  • The aim of this study was to provide pathological information of pediatric oral lesions by retrospectively analyzing oral biopsy results from pediatric patients at the Seoul National University Dental Hospital. Biopsy results of all oral lesions from pediatric patients, aged 0 - 16 years, were collected from the files of the Department of Oral Pathology, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from January 2000 to April 2020. The patients were divided into 3 age groups: 0 - 5, 6 - 11 and 12 - 16 years. All oral lesions were classified into three main categories: inflammatory and reactive, tumor or tumor-like and cystic lesions. Among the total of 2928 biopsy specimens, tumor or tumor-like lesions(35.66%) were the most common, followed by inflammatory and reactive lesions(34.29%) and cystic lesions(30.05%). Regardless of the categories used in this study, odontoma was the most frequently found lesion, mucocele and dentigerous cyst being the next common. This study was the first retrospective review of pediatric oral pathology in Korea, and the results from this study may assist in providing informative insight into the pediatric oral pathology for pediatric dentists.

  • This study was intended to provide basic data for developing an oral health management program for diabetic patients by understanding their oral health condition and defining the influence of diabetes on oral health. The following results were obtained through intraoral examination and questionnaire surveys done on one hundred and twenty two diabetic outpatients who visited endocrine department at Yeungnam University in Daegu and internal medicine department at Chungmu hospital in Cheonahn for 4 months from November, 2005 to February, 2006. DMF index according to the gender was significantly higher in females only in Filling index (p <0.05). Missing index increased as the age increased (p <0.001). Papillary bleeding index was significantly higher in females (p <0.05). Several indices which show oral status significantly higher as the duration of diabetes increased and as the blood sugar level before meal was higher (p <0.01, p <0.05). In a group that received oral hygiene education, several indices which show periodontal status were significantly lower than those in a group that didn't have it (p <0.001). According to the results, not only diabetic control but also general oral care should be included in self-management education for diabetic patients and this should be accomplished by appropriate oral health education program and staffs.
