  • In this study, a series of finite element numerical analyzes were performed considering the pavement thickness and traffic load for the purpose of stability analysis on the cavity ground. In order to verify the validity of this numerical method, the previous numerical analysis was used to simulate the mechanical behavior of cavity ground, and the results were compared and analyzed. Also, from the numerical results, it was possible to confirm the dynamic behavior of the ground by confirming the change of ground void ratio, surface settlement, and shear stress, and using the relationship between stress ratio, non-destructive depth and surface settlement, the safety of the was analyzed. As a result, as the pavement thickness decreased and the traffic load increased, the non-destructive depth and the overall stability of the ground decreased with the increase of surface settlement.

  • In design of bridges, estimation of actions and loadings is very important for the safety and maintenance of bridges. In general, effect of traffic loading on the bridge can be modeled as live load (including impact load) and fatigue load. For estimation of traffic loading, it is important to get reliable and comprehensive truck statistical data such as the traffic and weight information. To get statistical data, Bridge Weigh-In-Motion (BWIM), which measures the truck weights without stopping the traffic, is need to be developed. In this study, BWIM system with various functions is developed first. Then this system is used to get comprehensive truck data. Traffic loadings including fatigue and live loading are formulated from the truck data acquired from the bridges. Objectives of this study are to develop the BWIM system, to apply the system in test bridge in Highway, and to formulate the live and fatigue loading for bridge design.

  • Concrete slab curls and warps due to the uneven distribution of temperature and moisture and as the result, internal stress develops within the slab. Therefore, environmental loads must be considered in addition to the traffic loads to predict the lifespan of the concrete pavement more accurately. The strength of the concrete slab is gradually decreases to a certain level at which fatigue cracking is generated by the repetitive traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, a new fatigue regression model was developed based on the results from previously performed studies. To verify the model, another laboratory flexural fatigue test program which was not used in the model development, was conducted and compared with the predictions of other existing models. Each fatigue model was applied to analysis logic of cumulative fatigue damage of concrete pavement developed in the study. The sensitivity of cumulative fatigue damage calculated by each model was analyzed for the design factors such as slab thickness, joint spacing, complex modulus of subgrade reaction and the load transfer at joints. As the result, the model developed in this study could reflect environmental loading more reasonably by improving other existing models which consider R, minimum/maximum stress ratio.

  • A New pre-loading system, through which a large pre-load could be charged was developed and applied to the braced wall in order to stabilize the adjacent tunnel. A pre-load larger than the designated axial force of bracing was imposed to prevent the horizontal displacement of the braced wall during the ground excavation. For this purpose, real scale model tests (1/10) were conducted, without and with pre-load on braced wall. And numerical analyses were performed for both the cases without and with pre-load, which were half (50%) and full (100%) respectively, and larger scale of the design axial farce of bracing. FEM program called PLAXIS was used for numerical analysis. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel adjacent to the braced wall could be greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacement of braced wall was reduced by applying a pre-load, which was larger than the designated axial force of bracing.

  • In this study, the structural stability of the railway level crossing system using rubber panel for high speed lines was investigated by applying the specification for wind load conditions (Train gust) of high speed train (300km/h and 360km/h). A finite element analysis using three-dimensional modeling was carried out by applying the field conditions that was installed with the complicated configuration of the rubber plate panel system. As a result of this study, the structural stability of the rubber plate panel system for high speed train gust was analytically verified.

  • As well known, dowel bars are used to transfer traffic load acting on one edge to another edge of concrete slab in concrete pavement system. The dowel bars widely used in South Korea are round shape steel bar and they shows satisfactory performance under bending stress which is developed by repetitive traffic loading and environment loading. However, they are not invulnerable to erosion that may be caused by moisture from masonry joint or bottom of the pavement system. Especially, the erosion could rapidly progress with saline to prevent frost of snow in winter time. The problem under this circumstance is that the erosion not only drops strength of the steel dower bar but also comes with volume expansion of the steel dowel bar which can reduce load transferring efficiency of the steel dowel bar. To avoid this erosion problem in reasonable expenses, dowers bars with various materials are being developed. Fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) dower that is presented in this paper is suggested as an alternative of the steel dowel bar and it shows competitive resistance against erosion and tensile stress. The FRP dowel bar is developed in tube shape and is filled with high strength no shrinkage. Several slab thickness designs with the FRP dowel bars are performed by evaluating bearing stress between the dowel bar and concrete slab. To calculated the bearing stresses, theoretical formulation and finite element method(FEM) are utilized with material properties measured from laboratory tests. The results show that both FRP tube dowel bars with diameters of 32mm and 40mm satisfy bearing stress requirement for dowel bars. Also, with consideration that lean concrete is typical material to support concrete slab in South Korea, which means low load transfer efficiency and, therefore, low bearing stress, the FRP tube dowel bar can be used as a replacement of round shape steel bar.

  • The analysis of vehicular loads reflecting the domestic traffic circumstances is necessary for the development of adequate design live load models in the analysis and design of cable-supported bridges or the development of fatigue load models to predict the remaining lifespan of the bridges. This study intends to develop an ANN(artificial neural network)-based Bridge WIM system and Influence line-based Bridge WIM system for obtaining information concerning the loads conditions of vehicles crossing bridge structures by exploiting the signals measured by strain gauges installed at the bottom surface of the bridge superstructure. This study relies on experimental data corresponding to the travelling of hundreds of random vehicles rather than on theoretical data generated through numerical simulations to secure data sets for the training and test of the ANN. In addition, data acquired from 3 types of vehicles weighed statically at measurement station and then crossing the bridge repeatedly are also exploited to examine the accuracy of the trained ANN. The results obtained through the proposed ANN-based analysis method, the influence line analysis method considering the local behavior of the bridge are compared for an example cable-stayed bridge. In view of the results related to the cable-stayed bridge, the cross beam ANN analysis method appears to provide more remarkable load analysis results than the cross beam influence line method.
