Objectives : The main purpose of this research is to make a survey of the effective way of the Oriental medical care and to enlarge the range of Oriental medical treatment about traffic accidental patients. Methods : In following research, we surveyed 120 patients of traffic accident who were hospitalized in Dong-Shin Oriental Medical Hospital from October, 1, 2007 to August, 20, 2008 according to medical chart. Results : 1. In distribution of gender and age, the rate of male was 35.8%, that of female was 64.2% and the majority of the patients were twenties and thirties. 2. In the traffic accident patterns, the most was car crash from behind(61.7%) and after traffic accident, 75 patients(62.5%) visited our hospital for oriental medical treatment in less than 5days. 3. 46 patients(38.3%) choose the oriental medical treatment for the primary care and after medical care, 36 patients(31.7%) visited our hospital due to dissatisfaction of current treatment and maintained pain. 4. Partial pain was the chief complaint and the most of painful parts was neck(76.7%), followed by low back(69.2%). 5. Though radiation test, the most was cervical spine sprain(76.7%), followed by straightening of lumbar spine(66.7%). 6. In the periods of admission, less than 7 days was the most(53.3%), followed by less than 14 days(35.9%). 7. The treatment was effective to 93 patient out of 106 who had been hospitalized for less than 14 days. Conclusions : This data suggested that the Oriental medical care could be more effective treatment about traffic accidental patients without surgical injury.

Methods : In following research. we surveyed 197 neck pain patients of traffic accident who admitted in Daegu Hanny University Oriental Medical Hospital from May, 1, 2008 to september, 30, 2009 according to medical chart. Results : 1. In distribution of gender and age, the rate of female was 74.6%, that of male was 25.4% and the majority of the patients were thirties. In results of treatment according to gender and age, the effective rate of female was higher than the male. that of teens was highest. 2. In total results of treatment, the highest distribution was fair with 40.1%, the effective rate was 90.9%. 3. In category of traffic accident patterns, the highest distribution was car to car crash with 81.7%. The results of treatment according to the significance test were shown statistical significance. 4. In admission days, the highest distribution was 6~10 days with 41.1%. The highest effective rate was 21~25days with 100%. The results of treatment according to the significance test were shown statistical significance. Conclusions : This study suggested that Oriental medical treatments are effective in patients of neck pain caused by traffic accident. Further studies are needed for progress report that after accident patients are discharged from the Oriental Medical Hospital.

Objectives : The aim of this study is to review the instruments used to assess patient condition and the effects of Korean medical treatment for patients injured in traffic accidents in clinical studies in the Korean medical field published in South Korea. Methods : A literature study was performed, and clinical studies on patients injured in traffic accidents visiting Korean medical clinics or hospitals were examined. Data about chief complaints, tools used to assess either patients' condition or the effectiveness of Korean medical treatment, and time point of assessment were extracted. The studies were classified according to symptom. The use-frequency and the parent category of the assessment tools were also analyzed. Results : 78 studies were selected and classified into 5 categories based on the chief complaints, neck pain, lower back pain, headache, psychological symptoms and unspecified symptoms. Various scales were used to report the patient's pain severity, and functional or psychological status resulting from traffic accidents. Pain index, in particular VAS, was most frequently used and a few mechanical instruments and Korean medicinal assessment tools were mentioned. Conclusion : Most instruments used in Korean medicine clinical studies on patients injured in traffic accidents are self-reported tools. To assess both the patient's condition precisely and the effectiveness of Korean medical treatment on patients injured in traffic accidents, more appropriate and unified tools should be designed that consider pain, functional disability, psychological status and objective assessments measured by devices together.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy(FCST) on patients from traffic accidents with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of 33 patients who were treated for injuries stemming from traffic accidents at the Dong-Eui University Korean Medicine Hospital from December 29th, 2015 to August 29th, 2016. The patients were divided into 2 groups: Group A(n = 15) and Group B(n = 18). In Group A, patients received Korean medical treatments with FCST using an Accurate Balancing Appliance(ABA) - a standard intra-oral appliance. In Group B, patients received Korean medical treatments without FCST. To estimate the efficacy of the treatments in decreasing pain, we analyzed the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Neck Disability Index(NDI) and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI). Results : In Group A, VAS of headache(VAS H), VAS of neck & nuchal pain(VAS N), VAS of shoulder pain(VAS S), and VAS of low back pain(VAS L) were significantly improved during each period. In Group B, VAS H was significantly improved during each period, except the period from the first visit to two weeks later. VAS N, S, L were significantly improved during each period, except the period from the first visit to one week later. The total VAS improvement during each period in Group A was significantly higher than Group B. In both groups, NDI and ODI were improved significantly during each period. The improvement of NDI and ODI during each period in Group A was significantly higher than Group B. Conclusion : According to the results, FCST using ABA may be an effective treatment for patients from traffic accidents.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and visiting patterns of traffic accident outpatients Methods : In this study, we reviewed the medical charts of 2,048 traffic accident patients who visited Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine from January 1st, 2012 to December 31st, 2012. Results : In the distribution of gender and of age patients, the male percentage was 52.3% and the majority of patients were in their thirties(47.2%). In the distribution of the patient's initial visit, most patients visited our clinic from Monday to Wednesday. By monthly distribution, the more patients visited the clinic at the latter half of the year. In the duration of treatment, 1,389 patients(67.8%) finished treatment within four weeks. The most frequently cited sites of pain were neck(82.0%), followed closely by low back(74.0%). In the access route, 746 patients(36.4%) visited our traffic accident clinic as a first choice for primary treatment. We referred patients for radiologic examination in 159 patients(7.9%), of which the exams were mainly lumbar spine MRIs(3.6%) and cervical spine MRIs(2.8%). The most frequent diagnosis were herniated nucleus pulposus. Conclusions : This study shows that most of the patients who visited the traffic accident clinic of a Korean Medical Hospital presented neck and low back pain, and the majority showed improvement without surgical treatment. Following the increasing minor injury rate caused by traffic accidents, we expect the role of Korean Medicine Hospital to become more prominent.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of Pharmacopuncture Treatment with Chuna Treatments for Low Back Pain caused by Traffic accidents. Methods : This study was carried out on 81 patients with low back pain caused by Traffic accidents. The patients were divided into 2 group ; The pharmacopuncture(A) group was treated by pharmacopuncture treatment. The chuna(B) group was treated by chuna treatment. We measured Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) and Visual Analog Scale(VAS) on the patients before the treatment and on the 2nd, and 4th weeks after the treatments. Results : After being treated by our methods, the ODI and VAS score's were improved after the 4th weeks treatment in both groups. There is no significant difference on ODI and VAS score after the 4th weeks treatment in both groups. In the early stages(from pre to 2 weeks worth of treatment), Group A showed a decreasing VAS score compared to Group B. In the final stages(from 2 weeks to 4 weeks worth of treatment), Group B showed a higher decreasing amount compared to Group A in VAS score. Conclusions : The results suggest that both pharmacopuncture treatment and chuna treatment is considered to be effective and useful on low back pain caused by traffic accidents. There is no significant difference between pharmacopuncture treatment and chuna treatment for low back pain caused by traffic accidents, however the early stages of treatments(from pre to 2 weeks treatement) show that pharmocopouncture treatment is more effective than chuna treatment for low back pain by traffic accidents. In the final stages(from 2 weeks to 4 weeks treatment), chuna treatment is more effective than pharmacopuncture treatment for low back pain by traffic accident.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is difficult to treat and it is often fatal. If the medical treatment for ARDS is not effective, then extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be applied to the patient. A 22-year-old female who suffered multiple traumatic injuries due to a car accident presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Veinarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) was started to treat her respiratory failure. With the VA ECMO, the systemic oxygen saturation remained at only 84%, and so the ECMO system was switched to V-VA ECMO via an additional venous outflow through the right jugular vein to increase both the systemic and pulmonary oxygen saturation. After conversion to the V-VA type ECMO, the systemic oxygen saturation increased to 94% and the partial pressure of oxygen ($PaO_2$) increased to 65 mmHg. We report here on a successful case of ECMO conversion from the VA type to the V-VA type in a patient with severely hypoxic respiratory failure.

This study analyzed the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphashic Personality Inventory), VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), cervical and lumbar curvature (Cervical angle, Ishihara Index, Lumbar angle, Ferguson angle) and satisfaction score of patient of traffic accident. About 59 cases of patients admitted to the Korean Medicine hospital, MMPI and pain levels (VAS) cervical and lumbar curvature (Cervical angle, Ishihara Index, lumbar angle, Ferguson angle) and satisfaction score were measured and statistically analyzed. Depending on the type of accident divided into two groups of In car TA and Out car TA. After hospitalization, patient's pain index was improved as a whole. Pain index and evaluation of the cervical and lumbar curvature, according to the accident types, the difference was not statistically significant. In the analysis of the MMPI validity scales, In car TA group was analyzed by 'V-shaped', Out car TA group was analyzed by umbrella- shaped, 'inverted V-shaped'. Clinical scales of out car TA group were analyzed by 3-1 profile compared to the In car TA group. Results of multiple regression analysis showed no association between factors and MMPI scales. In the case of a traffic accident patients, damage to the body, as well as emotional and psychological factors are thought to affect the condition or prognosis of patients. In the future, for the management and treatment of these parts will be needed to complement the academic or institutional.

Objectives To explore the traffic injury patients' experience on health care utilization of Korean Medicine (KM) practice and perception of health care system for developing a Korean medicine clinical practice guideline (CPG) of traffic injuries by survey method. Methods Two hundred ten patients in suffering from traffic injuries were surveyed from September 1st, 2019 to January 31th, 2020 at 2 University Hospitals (Pusan National Korean Medicine Hospital and Kyung Hee Korean Medicine Hospital at Gangdong) and 1 Spine Specialty Hospital (Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine). A structured questionnaire of experience on health care utilization of KM practice and perception of health care system of was distributed to responders by visits and all data were statistically analysed. Results Survey results showed high satisfaction of patients with the experience of KM treatments in order of daoyin exercise (7.8±2.3), chuna manual therapy (7.7±4.0), pharmacoacupuncture (7.4±3.0) etc. Safety concerns were reported in 9.1% subjects and 205 (97.6%) patients answered that collaboration with KM and western medicine is necessary for patients with traffic injuries. For the patients' requirement for extending insurance coverage, the most required therapy was chuna manual therapy (57.5%) and pharmacoacupuncture (42.0%). Conclusions This study presented the realistic patient-centered perception of KM practice and health care system in Korea. These results will provide basic data to be reflected in the process of adaptation for the revision of Korean Medicine CPG for traffic injuries.
Objectives This survey study is designed to check the awareness and satisfaction of Korean herbal medicine in patients suffering from acute traffic accidents. Methods From May 1 to 20, 2020, patients who visited the hospital within 7 days after the accident and received prescription of Korean herbal medicine for the first-time symptoms were selected. Survey was conducted 10 days after the first visit to confirm the perception of Korean herbal medicine and expected to be used as a prior study to improve the quality of Korean medicine led by Korean herbal medicine. Results Most patients answered that they were aware of the prescribed Korean herbal medicine's dosage and treatment effects. 65% of the patients said they would like to receive other forms of prescription if possible. Most patients answered that portability is convenient and tastes better than normal. 48% of the respondents said that it was the first to time to take Korean herbal medicine, and 68% said that they were willing to take the Korean herbal medicine later. At the time of the first visit, the health condition assessed using EuroQol visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS) was 46.84, but 10 days after the treatment began, it increased significantly to 61.93. Conclusions The improvement of symptoms and high satisfaction with Korean medicine medical services contributed to the patient's willingness to visit the Korean medicine hospital again and to respond that they were willing to take further medication. EQ-VAS elevation suggests that overall patients' subjective health conditions have improved since treatment.
