Position of Stop Line according to the Left Turn Trajectory at Intersection (교차로 좌회전 궤적에 따른 정지선 위치에 관한 연구)

  • Position of stop line according to left turn trajectory at intersections was studied. The Purpose of this study is to suggest a design guideline of left turn trajectory at intersections which is related to the Position of cross road stop line. Distance from the curb line to the stop line at each lane was calculated and discussed for various combination of road widths. Three design vehicle type and three control radii were considered. Setbacks of stop line from the curb line are Proportional to the control radius which depends on type of design vehicle. 8m, lim and 19m setback for control radius of 12m, 15m and 23m were calculated respectively as their maximum value. This result will be helpful to Paint the road marking on the Pavement which is usually difficult to fit to the designated radius. Field study of the effect of left turn trajectory on flow rate and safety was conducted. It was approved that improperly designed left turn trajectory decreases left turn capacity and increases conflicts among left turn flows of the adjacent lane.

Development of Traffic Accident Frequency Prediction Model in Urban Signalized Intersections with Fuzzy Reasoning and Neural Network Theories (퍼지 및 신경망이론을 이용한 도시부 신호교차로 교통사고예측모형 개발)

  • This study is to suggest a methodology to overcome the uncertainty and lack of reliability of data. The fuzzy reasoning model and the neural network model were developed in order to overcome the potential lack of reliability which may occur during the process of data collection. According to the result of comparison with the Poisson regression model, the suggested models showed better performance in the accuracy of the accident frequency prediction. It means that the more accurate accident frequency prediction model can be developed by the process of the uncertainty of raw data and the adjustment of errors in data by learning. Among the suggested models, the performance of the neural network model was better than that of the fuzzy reasoning model. The suggested models can evaluate the safety of signalized intersections in operation and/or planning, and ultimately contribute the reduction of accidents.

Design of Drop Island to Accommodate the Turning Trajectory of Semi-Trailer (세미트레일러의 회전궤적을 고려한 물방울교통섬의 설치 방안 연구)

  • Triangle-shaped island was been used for the exclusive separation between the right-turn and the through flow. However, in case that existing Triangle-Shaped Island is built at the intersection of narrow road. there are more possibilities of traffic collision trespassing into the opposite lane. Accordingly, separation of the opposite lane is required so as to prevent the intrusion of the large-sized (a heavy) vehicle into the opposite lane turning at the intersection. This study showed the comparison between intersection composed of existing Triangle-Shaped Island and the intersection with Drop Island is added. First of all, in the safety aspect, a method to decide location and shape of Drop Island considering turning trajectory of the large-sized (the heavy vehicle) is addressed. The guideline on the placement of drop island install location and method to decide form the consider heavy truck's turn trajectory in safety side. As a conclusion. we analyzed that drop island is relatively superior to existing Triangle-Shaped Island in terms of driver, ease of driving, driving pleasantness, pedestrian, widening and economic performance aspect.

Effects of Traffic Islands on Traffic Accidents Reduction (교통섬 설치로 인한 교통사고 감소 효과)

  • A traffic island, typical channelization facilities, is widely applied to newly road designs and black spots improvement projects as traffic safety measures. However positive effects of a traffic island for traffic safety have not been reported specifically. Accordingly this study analyzed the accidents reduction effectiveness and economics of installing traffic islands under various roadways and traffic conditions. For this purpose normality test, paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were applied to this study based on traffic accidents, roadways and traffic environments data for 3 years before and after improvement at 54 intersections. The results showed that most of traffic accidents were reduced significantly after installing traffic islands except when traffic islands were installed in outside of cities and farming regions where use efficiency is low, curve sections with poor visibility, poor alignment sections with acceleration/deceleration lanes, road sections where occurs conflicts frequently due to did not install of acceleration/deceleration lanes, and road sections where cross with single lane road.

Safety Assessment of Signalized Intersection Using SSAM : A Case of Actuated Signal Control (SSAM을 이용한 신호교차로 안전성 평가(감응식 교통제어 도입사례를 중심으로))

  • The surrogate safety assessment model which was developed based on the conflict theory by FHWA in the US is software to analyze traffic conflicts using the individual vehicle trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model. This study aims at assessing the safety of different signal control strategies, including pre-time and actuated signal control, using the SSAM. To this end, this study effort has developed a microscopic traffic simulation model using VISSIM through a field study, and then produced the surrogate measures, including TTC, PET, DR, MaxS and DeltaS, and the numbers of conflicts, including rear-end, right angle and lane-changing conflicts. The assessment results indicated that the actuated signal control may produce more conflicts in terms of rear-end conflicts. The use of SSAM in the safety assessments for diverse traffic alternatives in a safe and fast way may contribute to the improvement of safety in the roadway transportation.

Effects of Semi-Rigid Connection and Foundation Type on Static Behavior of Plastic Greenhouse (부재 교차부와 기초 조건이 비닐하우스의 정적거동에 미치는 영향)

  • 비닐하우스는 매우 세장한 강관부재들을 교차 결합하여 조립한 철골 구조물의 한 종류이다. 현행 설계기준으로 단동 비닐하우스의 최대 구조성능은 풍하중 40m/s, 설하중 50cm에 달한다. 그러나 설계 단계에서는 부재들의 교차결합 특성 및 부재가 직접 지반에 삽입되는 기초의 특성이 적합하게 반영되지 않는 문제점이 있다. 따라서 가력시험을 통하여 반강접 특성을 갖는 부재 교차부 및 지반삽입기초 조건이 구조물의 거동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 부재 교차부가 강접 조건일 경우와 비교하여 교차부가 반강접일 경우에는 재하지점의 수평강성이 최대 54% 작게 나타났으나 주변 교차절점들에서의 에너지 흡수로 인하여 재하지점과 수평으로 3m 떨어진 지점에서는 반대로 최대 39% 큰 값을 보였다. 지반삽입기초의 경우에는 고정조건과 비교하여 재하지점의 수평강성이 최대 32% 작게 나타났으며, 지점부에서는 기초 조건의 영향으로 최대 26%의 휨강성 증가 효과를 보였다. 부재 교차부와 기초 조건이 구조물의 정적거동에 미치는 영향을 확인하였으나 최대내력과 강성 산정을 통한 구조성능 평가 방법의 개발이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

A Study on the Estimation of Design Service Traffic Volume for Turbo Roundabout (국내 나선형 교차로 도입을 위한 적정교통량 산정연구)

  • It is generally known that a two-lane roundabout has some problems in safety such as increasing conflicts, typically merging and diverging conflicts and conflicts between entering traffic and exiting as well as turning traffic. To solve these problems, a turbo-roundabout had been developed and has successfully brought safer and more efficient operation in other countries. In this study, micro simulations using VISSIM were conducted to investigate the maximum value of service traffic volume. It was found that operation of turbo-roundabouts was influenced by traffic volume for each turning traffic, and the maximum values of traffic volume were values between 2,400 and 2,800 vehicles per hour as rates of traffic volume for each turning traffic. Typically, turbo-roundabouts have limited to operate in conditions with more than 30% for left-turning traffic volume.

A Rebroadcasting Approach for Reliable Broadcast Message Dissemination in Urban Environments (도시 환경에서 신뢰성 높은 브로드캐스트 메시지 전파를 위한 브로드캐스팅 방안)

  • Fast and reliable message broadcasting is critical for safety critical applications of VANET due to the urgency and/or significance of the messages for passengers and drivers. For reliable message delivery, a mechanism for checking the reception of message at the neighboring vehicles and retransmitting it if necessary is required. Especially, in urban environments, where the traffic density tends to be high, mechanisms that minimize control message overhead such as beacon are appropriate in order to minimize the message collisions. Furthermore, broadcast delivery is especially difficult at the intersection due to the road side obstacles such buildings, and hence, a mechanism that enables effective and efficient delivery across intersections is required. In this paper, we propose a beaconless reliable and efficient broadcast approach which specifically taking into account the urban streets. The proposed approach checks the message reception of neighboring vehicles implicitly by taking into account the broadcast of message by next vehicle as the acknowledgement. When retransmissions is necessary around the intersections, vehicles located within the intersection area, where the chance of successful signal propagation toward every branch of the intersection is higher due to less signal attenuation caused by road side obstacles, are to do the retransmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can provide better reliability while consume less resources than the existing approaches.

A Study of Bicycle Crash Analysis at Urban Signalized Intersections (도시부 신호교차로에서의 자전거사고 분석)

  • The rapid growths of economy and automobiles since the 1970's have caused serious traffic jams and environmental disruption in urban areas. To relieve these problems caused by urbanization, there should be considered alternative means of transportation modes. Many developed countries have accepted bicycles as a so called "Green Mode" for environmentally oriented strategies to increase the qualities of urban lives. Korea have also attempted various means to raise bicycle usages. In this research, significant factors affecting bicycle crashes at signalized intersections in urban areas were studied. The model results showed that Poisson regression is the best fit methodology for data modeling and revealed that traffic volume, a number of driveways, configuration of the ground, presence of bicycle path, school, and bus stop, residential area, size of intersection are significant factors affecting the bicycle crashes.

Safety Evaluation of Flashing Yellow Operation at Night (야간 황색점멸신호 운영에 따른 안전성 평가)

  • This study deals with the relationships between flashing operation and traffic accident at signalized intersections. The objective of this study is to analyze safety effects of the yellow flashing operation at night. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attention to evaluating the safety results from signal operation of Cheongju's 190 signalized intersections using before-after evaluation with comparison group that are categorized by highway function. The main results are as follow. First, the numbers of traffic accidents and of fatalities/injuries in two highway types (arterial and collector road) have increased after operating the yellow flashing signal at night. Second, the numbers of accidents, fatalities/injuries, severe accidents and of fatalities/severe injuries in group A(arterial) have increased by 19%, 36%, 15% and 14%, respectively. Finally, the numbers of accidents, fatalities/injuries, severe accidents and fatalities/severe injuries in group B (collector) have increased by 50%, 64%, 41% and 77%, respectively.
