  • This study is to present objective data for the approaches of therapeutic exercise for the correction of genu varum by making an analysis and a comparison of the hip joints' ROM and isokinetic muscles of the female college students with straight legs with those of a female college student with idiopathic genu varum. Additionally, the state of the adductor muscle's thighs and the deep muscles of the subjects with bowed legs were experimented and the equipment's effect and applicability was reviewed through the process of the movement of newly developed exercise equipment, Balloa(2013, Balloa/Adonia/Korea). As a result, a person with genu varum needs the height increasing method for increasing external rotation ROM of a hip joint and requires the exercise techniques to strengthen external rotator muscles and to inhibit the activity of internal rotator muscles of a hip joint. Balloa increases the external rotation ROM of a hip joint and strengthens gluteal muscles, deep muscles, and adductor muscles, and the equipment's function of muscle strengthening shows that the equipment is an effective corrective exercise for the patients of genu varum.

  • Severe skeletal anteroposterior and vertical discrepancy is difficult to obtain satisfactory result by only orthodontic treatment, and much anteroposterior movement and treatment stability require orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery. The treatment goal of mandibular prognathic patients is to promote the function of stomatognathic system including mastication and phonetics, to improve the esthetics of facial profile and to maintain stability. Positional changes of hyoid bone, pharynx and tongue were seen with mandibular movement after orthognathic surgery. This study was performed to observe the changes of perimandibular tissues of orthodontic patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism who treated with orthodontic treatment, and the changes of hyoid bone, pharyx and tongue by relapse or recurrance after before and after orthognathic surgery and retention. The 22 patients who had mandibular prognathism were selected. They treated with orthodontic treatment with sagittal split ramus osteotomy as orthognathic surgery. And lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken 3 times : pre-surgery (T1), immediate post-surgery (T2) and 2 years alter retention (T3). The results were as follows : 1. The hyoid bone returned back after clockwise rotation to maxilla and occlusal plane during retention (P<0.01). 2. The hyoid bone moved posterior-inferiorly by mandibular surgery and returned back anterior-superior after retention. (P<0.01) 3. The changes of pharyngeal depth showed a little decrease at upper area in post- surgery, but it was not a significant difference generally through before, after and retention. 4. In relating to tongue base, the angle of tongue base was decreased and the dorsal area of tongue base moved to inferior-posterior direction and to superior direction again after retention (P<0.01). 5. Related to the thickness of upper and lower lip, the thickness of upper lip decreased after surgery, and the soft tissues below lower lip increased after surgery and decreased after retention.

  • The result of fingerprint matching is different as the quality or the state of input fingerprint image. We can extract the false direction information when the quality of fingerprint is degraded by the noise or the scars of the ridges. The information of the direction is very important for the elimination of the false minutia, the measurement of the ridge distance, matching, finding of cores and deltas. We need the method which can compensate or correct the false information of directions because the false directions include serious errors in the fingerprint recognition. We propose a method which can compensate or correct the false direction of fingerprint with a \alpha$-trimmed mean filter followed by LPF to reconstruct the false direction information when fingerprints are corrupted by scars.

  • Objectives One aspect of undesirable outcomes in orthodontic treatment includes excessive resorption of dental roots with mechanotherapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between treatment duration, adult and adolescent, gender, extraction and non-extraction root resorption after orthodontic treatment. Methods The subjects consisted of 140 orthodontic patients(adult : 70, adolescent : 70) who treated by standard edgewise technique at the three orthodontic hospital and clinic in seoul. Pre-treatment and post-treatment periapical radiographs were examined. The amount of root resorption was assessed for six anterior teeth according to criteria modified from Lupi et al root resorption score. Results Treatment duration was 24.7 months in the adult group and 33.5 months in the adolescents group. Between adult and adolescents group were significantly difference of mean of root resorption score(p<0.05). Female group and extraction group usually had higher prevalence of root resorption, but were not significant differences between the each groups(p>0.05). Conclusions When viewing these results, a lot of root resorption in adult patients appears, especially the maxillary central incisor, lateral incisor root resorption during orthodontic treatment occurs, so be careful and do more research to be done is suggested.

  • Information on the limits of treatment could allow for more rational treatment Planning and better results after treatment. From this point of view, this article has attempted to discuss the limits of orthodontic tooth movement. A relatively wider range of tooth movement is expected after Class III surgical-orthodontics than after conventional orthodontic treatment in general. The purposes of this Paper were: first, to evaluate the reliability of teeth position measuring gauge; and second, to elucidate the limits of orthodontic tooth movement. Dental casts of fifty-fine subjects were analyzed by using Set-up model checker (InVisitec Co., Korea) before and aster the Class III surgical-orthodontic treatment. The changes of maxillary and mandibular dental arch widths were also measured from the canines to the second molars. To test the inter-examiner reliability, randomly selected casts were measured by another examiner. Descriptive statistics and paired t tests were used to explain the tooth movement during treatment. The results showed a relatively good reliability of measuring instruments and a very diverse range of tooth movement. Collective changes by the orthodontic tooth movement evaluated in Class III surgical-orthodontics allowed for a suggestive interpretation of specific treatment patterns. Arch width changes during the inter-arch coordination were mainly the result of tipping in both buccal segments. Based on the results of this study, the possibility of a change in dentition as a result of orthodontic treatment should be understood in order to launch a well-organized plan of treatment.

  • Angulation and inclination of clinical crown is important for diagnosing, treatment planning and developing convenient orthodontic attachments. The aim of the study was to establish normative data with higher reliability on the angulation and inclination of clinical crown of Koreans with normal occlusion This study employed the dental casts of 307 (male. 187: female. 120) adult normal occlusion samples. The angulation and inclination of clinical crown were measured by set-up model checker In order to ensure reliability, intra- and inter-rater error were evaluated 3 times The resultant data obtained had excellent reliability however when compared with the previous data as well as with gender difference, clinically significant interpretation was impossible because the whithin-dataset normal variation was High which was common pattern of angulation and inclination measuring data of previous research The result of this biometric study seemed 4o suggest more substantive design of the multivariate. high-dimensional interpretation methodology of these normal variation is required if more compatible orthodontic appliance could be developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the fracture resistance of commercially available ceramic brackets to torsional force exerted from arch wires and to evaluate the characteristics of bracket fracture. Methods: Lingual root torque was applied to maxillary central incisor brackets with 0.022-inch slots by means of a $022\;{\times}\;028-inch$ stainless steel arch wire. A custom designed apparatus that attached to an Instron was used to test seven types of ceramic brackets (n = 15). The torque value and torque angle at fracture were measured. In order to evaluate the characteristics of failure, fracture sites and the failure patterns of brackets were examined with a Scanning Electron Microscope. Results: Crystal structure and manufacturing process of ceramic brackets had a significant effect on fracture resistance. Monocrystalline alumina (Inspire) brackets showed significantly greater resistance to torsional force than polycrystalline alumina brackets except InVu. There was no significant difference in fracture resistance during arch wire torsional force between ceramic brackets with metal slots and those without metal slots (p > 0.05). All Clarity brackets partially fractured only at the incisal slot base and the others broke at various locations. Conclusion: The fracture resistance of all the ceramic brackets during arch wire torsion appears to be adequate for clinical use.

  • The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the change of tooth mobility following orthodontic tooth movement. Six orthodontic patients which had been treated with edgewise appliance were used. Tooth mobility was measured with Periostest at the time of the removal of orthodontic appliance and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24 weeks after appliance removal. Following results were obtained: 1. Tooth mobility upon the removal of orthodontic appliance showed individual variation while incisor showed greater mobility than the other teeth. 2. Tooth mobility showed continued decrease pattern until 24 weeks after appliance removal. 3. While maxillary incisors showed continued decrease pattern during the study period, the other teeth showed steep decline pattern during the first 12 weeks and gentle slope during the second 12 weeks. 4. The tooth mobility of the maxillary second premolar showed the most typical change in terms of the consistency of the decline. 5. There were no significant differences of tooth mobility between heavy- and light-contacted anterior teeth during experimental period. The results of the present study suggested that periodontal reorganization is not completed even in 24 weeks following orthodontic tooth movement.

  • Patients who lost posterior teeth due to periodontitis or dental caries have collapsed vertical dimension, unstable occlusion and change of the mandibular position. In particular, patients in orthognathic surgery, clinician should re-establish the pre-operative stable position of mandibular condyle in articular fossa and favorable vertical dimension for high post-operative stability of mandible. Therefore, interdisciplinary approach and co-operation, including prosthetics, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, from diagnosis and treatment plan is important to get a good outcome. This case report was patients who had collapsed occlusal plane due to severe dental caries on maxillary molars with skeletal Class III malocclusion. Before orthognathic surgery, resetting of maxillary occlusal plane with temporary removable denture was performed. Then successful multidisciplinary approach was done and lead to acceptable clinical outcome.

  • Decalcification of the buccal surface of the teeth often occurs during fixed orthodontic treatment. This case report describes two cases in which cervical decalcificated teeth that occurred during orthodontic treatment were treated with direct resin veneer restoration. Early lesions without caries can be remineralized through periodic fluoride application, diet control, and oral hygiene improvement. As it progresses, appropriate repair treatment is required, and it is more preferable to focus on prevention rather than treatment after the occurrence of the lesion.
