Epistemological Implications of Scientific Reasoning Designed by Preservice Elementary Teachers during Their Simulation Teaching: Evidence-Explanation Continuum Perspective (초등 예비교사가 모의수업 시연에서 구성한 과학적 추론의 인식론적 의미 - 증거-설명 연속선의 관점 -)

  • In this study, I took the evidence-explanation (E-E) continuum perspective to examine the epistemological implications of scientific reasoning cases designed by preservice elementary teachers during their simulation teaching. The participants were four preservice teachers who conducted simulation instruction on the seasons and high/low air pressure and wind. The selected discourse episodes, which included cases of inductive, deductive, or abductive reasoning, were analyzed for their epistemological implications-specifically, the role played by the reasoning cases in the E-E continuum. The two preservice teachers conducting seasons classes used hypothetical-deductive reasoning when they identified evidence by comparing student-group data and tested a hypothesis by comparing the evidence with the hypothetical statement. However, they did not adopt explicit reasoning for creating the hypothesis or constructing a model from the evidence. The two preservice teachers conducting air pressure and wind classes applied inductive reasoning to find evidence by summarizing the student-group data and adopted linear logic-structured deductive reasoning to construct the final explanation. In teaching similar topics, the preservice teachers showed similar epistemic processes in their scientific reasoning cases. However, the epistemological implications of the instruction were not similar in terms of the E-E continuum. In addition, except in one case, the teachers were neither good at abductive reasoning for creating a hypothesis or an explanatory model, nor good at using reasoning to construct a model from the evidence. The E-E continuum helps in examining the epistemological implications of scientific reasoning and can be an alternative way of transmitting scientific reasoning.

Analysis of the Effect of the AI Utilization Competency Enhancement Education Program on AI Understanding, AI Efficacy, and AI Utilization Perception Improvement among Pre-service Secondary Science Teachers (AI 활용 역량 강화 교육 프로그램이 중등 과학 예비교사들의 AI 이해, AI 효능감 및 AI 활용에 대한 인식 개선에 미친 효과 분석)

  • In this study, in order to strengthen the AI utilization competency of pre-service secondary science teachers, a project activity in which pre-service teachers directly create an 'AI-based molecular structure customized learning support tool' by using Google's teachable machine was developed and applied. To this end, the program developed for 26 third-grade pre-service teachers enrolled in the Department of Chemistry Education at H University in Chungcheongbuk-do was applied for 14 sessions during extracurricular activities. Then, the perceptions of 'understanding how AI works', 'efficacy of using AI in science classes', and 'plans to utilize AI in science classes' were investigated. As a result of the study, it was found that the program developed in this study was effective in helping pre-service teachers understand the operating principle of AI technology for machine learning at a basic level and learning how to use it. In addition, the program developed in this study was found to be effective in increasing the efficacy of pre-service teachers for the use of AI in science classes. And it was also found that pre-service teachers recognized the aspect of using AI technology as a new teaching·learning strategy and tool that can help students understand science concepts. Accordingly, it was found that the program developed in this study had a positive impact on pre-service teachers' AI utilization competency reinforcement and perception improvement at the basic level. Implications of this were discussed.

An analysis of students' engagement in elementary mathematics lessons using open-ended tasks (개방형 과제를 활용하는 초등 수학 수업에서 학생의 참여 분석)

  • Students' engagement in lessons not only determines the direction and result of the lessons, but also affects academic achievement and continuity of follow-up learning. In order to provide implications related to teaching strategies for encouraging students' engagement in elementary mathematics lessons, this study implemented lessons for middle-low achieving fifth graders using open-ended tasks and analyzed characteristics of students' engagement in the light of the framework descripors developed based on previous research. As a result of the analysis, the students showed behavioral engagement in voluntarily answering teacher's questions or enduring difficulties and performing tasks until the end, emotional engagement in actively expressing their pleasure by clapping, standing up and the feelings with regard to the topics of lessons and the tasks, cognitive engagement in using real-life examples or their prior knowledge to solve the tasks, and social engagement in helping friends, telling their ideas to others and asking for friends' opinions to create collaborative ideas. This result suggested that lessons using open-ended tasks could encourage elementary students' engagement. In addition, this research presented the potential significance of teacher's support and positive feedback to students' responses, teaching methods of group activities and discussions, strategies of presenting tasks such as the board game while implementing the lessons using open-ended tasks.

  • This study explored ways to activate tourism promotion centers located in 23 regions of Gyeongsangbuk-do and carried out qualitative research through FGI(Focus Group Interview) to the heads of tourism promotion agencies, public officials, and professors. The FGI(Focus Group Interview) analysis results discussed the problems of tourism promotion and information center facilities recognized by stakeholders in Gyeongsangbuk-do and service improvement cooperation. At a time when the importance of the tourism industry is being emphasized, it is time to expand and improve the facilities of the tourism promotion center as a tourism information facility for Koreans and foreigners. Gyeongsangbuk-do Province has a natural environment and unique tourism resources that can become a tourist attraction in South Korea. In particular, four topics were drawn: providing satisfaction with visitors linked to regional economic revitalization cooperation and tourism guidance, and measures to boost revenue generation at public relations centers and information centers in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The Effects of Team-Based Learning(TBL) for Edutainment Activation in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 에듀테인먼트 활성화를 위한 팀기반학습(TBL) 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of team-based learning(TBL) program on problem solving ability, self-directed learning and learning motivation of nursing students in a adult nursing course. Methods: This study was quasi-experimental study by using nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 132 nursing students consisting of each experiment group 66 and control group 66. The experiment group was provided TBL program for 2 hours per session during 6 sessions and control group was provided lecture. Data were collected by questionnaires from April 20 to June 19, 2018. Data was analyzed by a chi-square test, t-test and ANCOVA using IBM SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The mean scores of problem solving ability(F=9.179, p=.003), self-directed learning(F=7.447, p=.007) and learning motivation(F=7.974, p=.006) were significantly higher in experiment group than those in control group. Conclusion: TBL program in a adult nursing course was effective in problem solving ability, self-directed learning and learning motivation of nursing students.

The Effect of Cooperative Learning on Self-directed Learning Ability (협동학습이 자기주도학습 능력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study attempted to examine how participation in a cooperative learning extracurricular program affects the improvement of college students' self-directed learning abilities. In order to operate a cooperative learning extracurricular program, students were recruited voluntarily through the school system. A total of 128 students were selected. They formed groups according to the number of participants and participated in the cooperative learning extracurricular program for 9 weeks. Before the program was implemented and after the program was terminated, a survey was conducted on the self-directed learning ability of participating students through a questionnaire. The effectiveness of the program was examined through pre-post tests of the experimental group. The results are as follow. First, the self-directed learning ability scores of students who participated in the cooperative learning extracurricular program significantly improved. Second, in order to closely analyze self-directed learning ability, the sub-elements of self-directed learning ability were examined, and the scores of self-awareness and learning strategy, which are sub-elements of self-directed learning ability, were found to have significantly increased. However, although scores for learning motivation and learning situations improved, the levels were not found to be statistically significant. Based on these results, we presented discussions for improving college students' self-directed learning ability and ways to revitalize cooperative learning in universities.

A Model for Constructing Learner Data in AI-based Mathematical Digital Textbooks for Individual Customized Learning (개별 맞춤형 학습을 위한 인공지능(AI) 기반 수학 디지털교과서의 학습자 데이터 구축 모델)

  • Clear analysis and diagnosis of various characteristic factors of individual students is the most important in order to realize individual customized teaching and learning, which is considered the most essential function of math artificial intelligence-based digital textbooks. In this study, analysis factors and tools for individual customized learning diagnosis and construction models for data collection and analysis were derived from mathematical AI digital textbooks. To this end, according to the Ministry of Education's recent plan to apply AI digital textbooks, the demand for AI digital textbooks in mathematics, personalized learning and prior research on data for it, and factors for learner analysis in mathematics digital platforms were reviewed. As a result of the study, the researcher summarized the factors for learning analysis as factors for learning readiness, process and performance, achievement, weakness, and propensity analysis as factors for learning duration, problem solving time, concentration, math learning habits, and emotional analysis as factors for confidence, interest, anxiety, learning motivation, value perception, and attitude analysis as factors for learning analysis. In addition, the researcher proposed noon data on the problem, learning progress rate, screen recording data on student activities, event data, eye tracking device, and self-response questionnaires as data collection tools for these factors. Finally, a data collection model was proposed that time-series these factors before, during, and after learning.

An analysis of the educative features of mathematics teacher guidebooks for grades 3 and 4 (초등학교 3~4학년군 수학 교사용 지도서의 교육적 특징 분석)

  • Despite the significance of mathematics teacher guidebooks as a support for teacher learning, there are few studies that address how elementary mathematics teacher guidebooks support teacher learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze the educative features of elementary mathematics teacher guidebooks for grades 3 and 4. For this, six units from each of ten kinds of teacher guidebooks were analyzed in terms of seven dimensions of Teacher Learning Opportunities in Korean Mathematics Curriculum Materials (TLO-KMath). The results of this study showed that mathematics content knowledge for teaching was richly provided and well organized. Teacher guidebooks provided teacher knowledge to anticipate and understand student errors and misconceptions, but were not enough. Sample dialogues between a teacher and students were offered in the teacher guidebooks, making it easier for teachers to identify the overall lesson flow and key points of classroom discourse. Formative assessment was emphasized in the teacher guidebooks, including lesson-specific student responses and their concomitant feedback examples per main activity. Supplementary activities and worksheets were provided, but it lacked rationales for differentiated instruction in mathematics. Teacher knowledge of manipulative materials and technology use in mathematics was provided only in specific units and was generally insufficient. Teacher knowledge in building a mathematical community was mainly provided in terms of mathematical competency, mathematical classroom culture, and motivation. This paper finally presented implications for improving teacher guidebooks to actively support teacher learning.

What Changed and Unchanged After Science Class: Analyzing High School Student's Conceptual Change on Circular Motion Based on Mental Model Theory (과학수업 후 변하는 것과 변하지 않는 것: 정신모형 이론을 중심으로 한 고등학생의 원운동 개념변화 사례 분석)

  • In physics education, the research on students' conceptions has developed in the discussion on the nature and the difficulty of conceptual change. Recently, mental models have been a theoretical background in concrete arguments on "how students' conceptions are constructed or created." Mental models that integrate information in the presented problem and individual knowledge in their long-term memory have important information about not only expressed ideas but also in the thinking process behind the expressed ideas. The purpose of this study is to investigate the forming process and the characteristics of high school student's mental models about circular motion, and how they were changed by instruction. We used the think-aloud method based on the instrument for identifying student's mental models about circular motion, pretest of physics concept, mind map and interview for investigating student's characteristics. The results of the study showed that instructions based on the mental model theory facilitated scientific expressed model, but several factors that affected forming mental models like epistemological belief didn't change scientifically after 3 lessons.

Field Perception Analysis on Policy Outcomes of Academic Libraries (국내 대학도서관 정책 성과에 대한 현장 인식 조사)

  • In this study, we aimed to examine the level of implementation of the second comprehensive plan for promoting academic libraries (2019-2023) by analyzing key statistics of academic libraries and gathering perceptions from library staff. We analyzed the changes in major statistical indicators of libraries over the past five years. Additionally, we surveyed library staff to understand their overall perceptions of the plan and their attitudes towards the 17 sub-tasks outlined in it. The analysis of 369 survey responses revealed several key findings. Firstly, most respondents comprehended the plan well and frequently utilized it for developing their libraries' development and implementation plans. Secondly, the IPA results indicated that regardless of the type of university, there should be a continuous focus on facility improvement, teaching-learning support, and expanding access to academic resources. Efforts to develop library policies and strengthen human and financial resources were identified as crucial. Thirdly, four-year universities particularly emphasized the importance of expanding access to international academic resources compared to junior colleges. Conversely, junior colleges perceived foundational skill-building programs and inclusive services as more significant than four-year universities. The application of the IPA diagonal model revealed that the performance levels of all sub-tasks were lower than their perceived importance levels, suggesting the need for strategies to enhance effectiveness in future comprehensive plan formulation.
