Optimum Maintenance Strategy of Bridges Based on System Reliability (시스템 신뢰성에 기초한 교량의 최적 유지관리 계획)

  • Bridge construction is almost complete in many countries. Thus, the government and highway agencies change their focus from constructing to maintaining. Effectively maintaining bridges require predicting their lifespan using a system reliability viewpoint. Likewise, maintenance models based on the system reliability concept should be developed. Thus, this study developed maintenance models for preventive maintenance and essential maintenance using system reliability and lifetime distributions. The optimal maintenance strategy for an existing bridge was obtained using the developed maintenance models.

  • This study suggests that the management of bridge was developed data which supports to execute analysis a-bout bridge. Basically, it makes standardization that the item of management of bridge keeps the effective data management which demonstrates the designed database by graphic processing technic and development of pro-gram in database manipulation. As a result of this study, through the analysis of the management of bridge, we tried to make the acceptable management item standard and to design database. For the purpose of it, computer program and database design with analyzing current works, stable inspection processing demanding the management of bridge and taking adventage of them. In this study, we can get the minimuim cost of the management of bridge and keep maximum common usage. also we contribute to perform effective data management and management system of bridge.

  • For the bridges managed by the municipalities, there is a need for a maintenance management system for the municipal governments for the scientific and systematic maintenance standard and the scientificization of the budget acquisition and execution through the quantified data base. The purpose of this study is to develop a system for efficient management of small bridgies maintained by the municipality and use ICT convergence technology such as BIM / GIS technology. The details of the system development include the development of the small bridgies maintenance program for mobile devices, the development of the small bridgies maintenance database, the development of the small bridgies integration maintenance management, and the reliability of the program system developed by checking the construction and operation contents of the small bridgies test-bed. The developed program system is linked to the development of smart name plate and reader module of non - power system.

  • This study proposes a practical and realistic method to establish an optimal lifetime maintenance strategy for deteriorating bridges by considering the life-cycle performance as well as the life-cycle cost. The proposed method offers a set of optimal tradeoff maintenance scenarios among other conflicting objectives, such as minimizing cost and maximizing performance. A genetic algorithm is used to generate a set of maintenance scenarios that is a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem related to the and the life-cycle cost and performance as separate objective functions. A computer program, which generates optimal maintenance scenarios, was developed based on the proposed method. The subordinate relation between bridge members has been considered to decide optimal maintenance sequence. The developed program has been used to present a procedure for finding an optimal maintenance scenario for steel-girder bridges on the Korean National Road. Through this bridge maintenance scenario analysis, it is expected that the developed method and program can be effectively used to allow bridge managers an optimal maintenance strategy satisfying various constraints and requirements.

  • In this paper, A calculating cost method of maintenance and repair for bridge which is built up by new construction technique named Up-Down Precast Concrete(UDPSC). After 2000, 109 Bridges which are using UDPSC technique have been built up, 37 bridges's construction work are processing, and 194 designs are presented for construction. Because this technology has developed recently, there are few field data for analyzing the maintenance and repair cost. Therefore, the maintenance and repair cost is computed using Construction and Transportation Ministry's guide line for computation and former research's data.

  • As bridges have been longer and bigger recently, lots of bridge management systems (BMS) have been developed for each bridge. However, the differences among the data models developed by different system developers give a serious problem in integrated information management for national security. The aim of this study is to develop a common data model which can be referred in development of the BMS. The existing BMS and work process by laws are carefully analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the bridge management and maintenance process is categorized into the four basic activity types. In addition, common data models for each the unit activity type are defined.

  • In this paper, a new method for the bridge maintenance is proposed to overcome the limit of the existing methods and to implement the preventive bridge maintenance system. The proposed method can establish the lifetime optimum maintenance strategy of the deteriorating bridges considering the life-cycle performance as well as the life-cycle cost. The lifetime performance of the deteriorating bridges is evaluated by the safety index based on the structural reliability and the condition index detailing the condition state. The life-cycle cost is estimated by considering not only the direct maintenance cost but also the user and failure cost. The genetic algorithm is applied to generate a set of maintenance scenarios which is the multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem related to the life-cycle cost and performance. The study examined the proposed method by establishing a maintenance strategy for the existing bridge and its advantages. The result shows that the proposed method can be effectively applied to deciding the bridge maintenance strategy.

  • This paper proposes a method to establish an optical lifetime maintenance strategy for deteriorating bridges in consideration of life-cycle performance and cost. A program is developed based on the proposed method, which can generate optimum maintenance scenarios not only at the individual member level but also at the system level of the bridge. By applying the developed program is studied through the comparative analysis of maintenance strategies generated at each level. According to the results of comparison between maintenance strategies of the member-level analysis and system-level analysis. It is expected that the establishment of a maintenance strategy through the bridge system-level analysis considering target, members reflects practical and reasonable results.

  • In this study, a bridge maintenance system is developed to generate performance-based optimum maintenance strategy by considering the life-cycle cost. A multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem is formulated to generate a tradeoff maintenance scenarios which satisfies the balance among the conflicting objectives such as the performance and cost during the bridge lifetime and a genetic algorithm is applied to the system. By using the developed program, this study proposes a process of optimum maintenance scenario applying to the steel girder bridge of national road. The developed system improves the current methods of establishing the bridge maintenance strategy and can be utilized as an efficient tool to provide the optimum bridge maintenance scenario corresponding to the various constraints and requirements of bridge agency.

Bridge Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Preventive Maintenance (예방적 유지관리를 통한 교량의 생애주기비용 절감 효과 분석)

  • The paper aims at evaluating effects of preventive maintenance on life cycle cost(LCC) reduction of bridges. The preventive maintenance activities capable to delay bridge deteriorations can reduce overall maintenance costs and extend service life of a bridge by regularly providing maintenance activities and avoiding larger maintenance(repairs or rehabilitations) costs. Couple of prediction models were proposed in order to calculate LCC of a typical bridge: a health score model and repair rehabilitation cost model. In addition, the maintenance activities such as wash and painting were also suggested in order to consider effects of preventive maintenance in the analysis based on literature reviews. According to analysis results, new maintenance strategy(reactive maintenance + preventive maintenance) can save \0.5 billion per bridge for future life-cycle costs over 100 year analysis or \184 billion for entire HBMS(Highway Bridge Management System) inventory over 20 years. Small investments for preventive maintenance in improved bridge management can have a very significant return when considering the large bridge inventory.
