The risk of transverse cracking in concrete decks of composite bridges is affected by many factors related to the bridge design, materials, and construction. Among others, the thermal and shrinkage stresses are the most important factors that affect the transverse cracking in early-age concrete decks. The thermal stress at the concrete deck is mainly affected by both ambient temperature and solar radiation. The shrinkage stress at the general strength concrete deck is mainly affected by drying shrinkage and the high strength concrete deck is mainly affected by autogeneous shrinkage. Three-dimensional finite element models of composite bridges were made to investigate the stress due to thermal and shrinkage stress.

By using topology and shape optimization, a theoretically optimum FRP deck was proposed. Firstly, a topologically optimal shape, truss-like structure without hinges, was found. A truss-shape frame is the most ideal structure when subjected to a concentrated force at the center of simply supported beam. An armature was found at the point joining horizontal chord and diagonal chord, which was used as a new design variable. Secondly, optimum value of each variable was decided through shape optimization using genetic algorithm. To compare it with existing commercial FRP decks, shape optimization was performed by fixing the height of FRP decks. To verify the performance of the FRP deck proposed in this study, a finite element analysis was performed. As a result, it satisfies serviceability and safety guide lines of FRP decks.

In the current Korea highway bridge design code (KHBDC), the criteria of concrete bridge decks are mainly based on short span decks of steel plate girder bridge, there are very little the specific criteria of long span decks in the twin steel plate girder bridge. Therefore, to put more rational and practical design criteria of the long span decks on the code, the complements of the related criteria are required in the current design code. This paper proposed the design bending moments of decks with 6.0~12.0m span for KL-510 load in direction to bridge (longitudinal direction) and perpendicular direction to bridge (transverse direction). The effects of orthotropic concrete decks, stiffness of steel girders and multiple lane loading factors (MLLF) were reflected in the design bending moments. The proposed design bending moments were compared to the design bending moments with DB-24 load.
HPC를 사용한 장기수명 바닥판 콘크리트의 시공에 관한 4가지 접근방법을 제시하였다. Nebraska, New Hampshire, Texas

A large number of FRP decks are already in service worldwide because the lighter FRP-based bridge decks are ideal for rapid construction to reduce the dead load of superstructures. And the proper design process is demanded for the effective FRP deck application. In this paper, to get the basic prototype of FRP bridge decks, the ratio of individual parameters, which compose the specification of FRP bridge decks, are determined by a finite element analysis. In addition, optimum FRP deck shapes are determined considering complex constraints and material properties of bi-directional characteristics. Upon these results, the prototype of FRP bridge decks is validated.

In 1980s, a number of bridges with bare concrete deck were constructed on the Korea highway. After 20 years service, many bare concrete decks are still in good condition without special maintenance activity. Therefore, the application of the bare concrete deck is being reestimated from the view of construction and maintenance. As a part of the program, the characteristic of penetration(surface chloride and apparent diffusion coefficient) of de-icing salt into bare concrete bridge deck was analyzed in order to predict the service life of bridge on Korea highway.

In the steel-free bridge concrete deck, steel straps are generally used instead of conventional steel rebar while laterally restrained in the perpendicular direction to the traffic in order fir the arching effect of concrete deck. In this paper, the minimum amount of FRP bar is to be suggested based on the structural strength, crack propagation, stress level and others in order to control cracks. As a result of laboratory tests, the structural strength of deck with 0.15 percentage of steel strap showed improved structural strength including ductility. The long-term serviceability of steel strap deck with FRP bar proved to satisfy the requirements and to be structurally stable while showing the amount of crack and residual vertical displacement within the allowable limits after two million cyclic loadings. The structural failure of RC bridge deck is generally caused from the punching shear rather than moment. Therefore, the ultimate load at failure could be estimated using the shear strength formula in the two-way slab based on ACI and AASHTO criteria. However the design criteria tend to underestimate the shear strength since they don't consider the arching effects and nonlinear fracture in bridge deck with lateral confinement. In this paper, an equation to estimate the punching shear strength of steel strap deck is to be developed considering the actual failure geometries and effect of lateral confinement by strap while the results are verified in accordance with laboratory tests.

The purpose of this study is to provide the efficient method and guideline of controlling the cracking in bridge deck concrete due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of cracking shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to conceive the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis corresponding to drying shrinkage on bridge deck are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of bridge deck concrete shows different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

PSC-I girder bridges constitute the largest proportion among highway bridges in Korea. According to the precision safety diagnosis data for the past 10 years, approximately 41.3% of the PSC-I bridges have been graded as C. Furthermore, with the increase in the aging of bridges, preemptive management is becoming more important. Damage and deterioration to the deck and girder with a long replacement cylce can have considerable impacts on the service and deterioration of a bridge. In addition, the high rate of device damages, including expansion joints and bearings, necessitates an investigation into the influence of the device damage in the structural members of the bridge. Therefore, this study defined representative PSC-I girder bridges with single and multiple spans to evaluate heterogeneous damages that incorporate the damage of the bridge member and device with the deterioration of the deck. The heterogeneous damages increased a crack area ratio compared to the individual single damage. For the single-span bridge, the occurrence of bearing damage leads to the spread of crack distribution in the girder, and in the case of multi-span bridges, expansion joint damage leads to the spread of crack distribution in the deck. The research underscores that bridge devices, when damaged, can cause subsequent secondary damage due to improper repair and replacement, which emphasizes the need for continuous observation and responsive action to the damages of the main devices.
