  • This study was designed to find out the determinants of types of bullying behavior, and the effects of types of bullying behavior on the bullies. For this purpose, a hypothetical model which explains the relationships among 6 environmental factors, 5 types of bullying behavior, and 5 outcome variables for the bullies was developed. Using the data collected from 177 junior and high school students who have bullied the other students, the hypothetical model was tested. For data analysis, a path analysis was used, and the best-fitting model was found (df=78, GFI=0.953, CFI=1.00). As a result of analyzing the model, types of bullying behavior were found to be determined by the different environmental factors: Isolation was determined by 2 factors (feeling of isolation from friends, exposure to bullying), social bullying by 2 factors (lack of support from parents, exposure to bullying), verbal bullying by conflicts with parents, physical bullying by 3 factors (lack of support from parents, exposure to isolation and exposure to bullying), and instrumental bullying by lack of support from parents. On the other hand, the pleasure that the bullies feel after bullying behavior was increased by isolation, verbal bullying and physical bullying, while decreased by instrumental bullying. Guilt feeling was decreased by isolation and instrumental bullying, while increased by physical bullying. Isolation increased the tendency of blaming the victim. Isolation and instrumental bullying increased bullies' self-esteem, while social bullying decreased self-esteem. Verbal bullying increased the extent of bullying, while instrumental bullying decreased the extent of bullying. Based on the findings, the intervention strategies to change the bullies' attitudes toward victim, and to increase social support from the significant others as well as the effective ways to reorganize the school environment in order to reduce and prevent bullying behavior were suggested.

  • This study aims to explore the reality of middle school students witnessing cyberbullying and their types of behaviors after witnessing and to examine the role of empathy affecting the behaviors of bystanders of cyberbullying. For this purpose, we collected the survey data from 595 middle school students in the Gyeong-Gi region. Results show that 61.2% of the respondents report the witness of cyberbullying, Among which cyber slander is the most common, followed by spreading false information, outcast, sexual harassment, and extortion. The behaviors of bystanders who witnessed cyberbullying are categorized into spectating, defending, agreeing, or doing nothing. When it comes to the role of the students' empathy, findings show that the 'empathic concern' and 'personal pain' -, parts of emotional empathic abilities, can significantly influence behaviors of cyberbullying bystanders. These findings not only call the attention to the seriousness of cyberbullying among middle school students, but they also suggest the implication that emotion empathy education is required along with emotion control education.

Behavior problems comprise violations of norms, bullying, and deviant behavior in the cyberspace. A data set of 2949 Korean children in their 4th grade is analyzed to yield three main results. First, variables such as contact with delinquent friends, aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, gender, and depression have significant effects on violations of norms. Children who have more delinquent friends, higher level of aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, or depression report more violations of norms. Second, delinquent friends, stress of peer relationship, aggressiveness, stress of appearance complex, gender, parents' violent attitudes toward children, and negative self-image are turned out to be important variables predicting bullying. Children with more delinquent friends, higher level of stress, higher level of aggressiveness, or lower self-image are more likely to experience bullying. Children who perceive their parents to be violent show more bullying experience. Third, each of aggressiveness, delinquent friends, stress of appearance complex, gender, relationship with teacher, and family income has significant effect on deviant behavior in cyberspace. Children with higher level of aggressiveness, more delinquent friends, stress of appearance complex, or negative impression of teacher are more likely to deviate in cyberspace. Children from higher income families report more deviant behavior in cyberspace. Boys show more experiences in every category of behavior problems than girls.

  • This study is about the impersonal behavior of the supervisor, which is the root cause of 'Workplace Harassment [bullying]', which becomes familiar to Korean workers. For the purpose of the study, characteristics of supervisors are classified into three situations such as personal situation (authoritarian propensity), organizational situation (job insecurity), and personal and organizational situation (self-defensive ambivalence). Then the effects of those propensities on the organizational commitment of their subordinating workers through abusive supervision were analyzed. To this end, separate surveys for team leader and team members were composed. The subjects were male and female workers in large enterprise in Korea. The major results of the study are as follows. First, the three predisposing factors related to the abusive supervision (authoritarianism, job insecurity, and self-defensive ambivalence) made positive (+) effects on the abusive supervision of the supervisor. Second, in the hypothesis 2 regarding the effects of the abusive supervision of the supervisor on the organizational commitment of the subordinates, it was found that the abusive supervision of the supervisor made negative (-) effects on the organizational commitment of the subordinates. Third, in the verification of the hypothesis 3 regarding the mediating effect of the abusive supervision, the three predisposing factors partially mediated the abusive supervision and made negative (-) effects on the organizational commitment of the subordinates.
