  • Photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate were compared between two-year-old seedlings of Pinus rigida and of Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda $F_1$ to examine whether growth potential could be predicted at young stages. Six families per each species used in this study were grown at the nursery of the Institute of Forest Genetics in Suweon. Photosynthesis and net assimilation rate showed seasonal and genetic variations among the families. Photosynthetic ability of most of the families except for three families of Pinus rigida decreased with increasing ages, while net assimilation rate of all the families decreased with increasing ages. The rank of photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate among the families varied during the experimental period. Thus, growth potential was better predicted from total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate rather titan from photosynthetic ability and net assimilation rate at a certain period. Total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate were correlated with total dry weight. Correlation coefficients were 0.6394 and 0.7998, respectively. Thus, growth potential of the two species could be predicted by the measurement of total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate. Family K.G. No. $13{\times}7-107$ from Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda $F_1$ and family K.G. No. 1 from Pinus rigida were the best in total photosynthetic ability and total net assimilation rate within species.

  • Experiment were conducted to study the photosynthetic ability of several rice varieties and the influence of the drymatter production on the yield components of the rice plant, especially in ripening period. The photosynthetic ability at the ripening period, the varieties were classified into two groups as relatively high capacity and low capacity. With the earlier the transplanting date and the higher the N-content leaf blade, the greater the ratio of reserved assimilates befere heading time to the ear. This could be support the fact that the rate of full-ripened grains or grain yield of 'Tongil' variety may increased by the change of environment condition.condition.

  • We investigated seasonal photosynthetic capacity and water use efficiency changes of Korean fir (Abies koreana Wils.) trees located at three sites around the peak of Mt. Halla, Witseorum, Youngsil and Jindallebat. At each sites, we chose healthy and declining individuals to examine the differences of physiological characteristics between them. Net photosynthetic capacity in $15^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. The difference of net photosynthetic capacity between healthy and damaged trees was clear in June and August but damaged trees recovered with passing of the time. There was no difference between healthy and damaged trees in September on photosynthetic rate. Generally, water use efficiency (WUE) of damaged trees was higher than healthy trees.

  • Photosynthetic activity of two rice varieties "Suweon 318, Nagdongbyeo" and two species of grass weeds, two species of sedge weeds, and four species of broadleaf weeds was measured at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 Klux light intensity. Relative photosynthetic activity of weed species was high in the decreasing order in Cyperus serotinus, Echinochloa grusgalli var caudata, Bidens tripartita, Monochoria vaginalis, and Ludwigia prostrata, while respiration rate was high in Bidens tripartite, Monochoria vaginalis and Cyperus serotinus. Light saturation point of Monochoria vaginalis and Sagittaria pygrnaea may be considered as at 30 klux and photosynthetic rate of other weed species increased with increasing light intensity. Photosynthetic activity of weed species was generally two times higher than rice at the light intensity of 50 klux and increased more than rice as light intensity increased. Photosynthetic activity per leaf dry weight and specific leaf area was higher in broadleaf weeds than in grass and sedge weed species.

  • Photosynthetic rate of sesame varieties was investigated under the different cultural environments such as planting density or light intensity. The photosynthetic rate of Pungnyeon, monoculm variety, was higher than that of Kwangsan before flowering stage, while it was vice versa after the flowering stage. The maximum rate of photosynthetic rate was obtained three weeks after planting. The effects of light intensity on photosynthetic rate four weeks after planting was not apparent when the light intensity was reduced to the level of 35% and 55%, respectively. However, when the light intensity was reduced to 75% of the normal light intensity, the photosynthetic rate was also greatly reduced. The Photosynthetic rate after the flowering stage was reduced in the order of normal light, 35% and 75%, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to define the effects of light transparent rate of the shading on the photosynthesis ability of the ginseng leaves and their seasonal changes. Regardless the effects of light transparent rate of shading and age of ginseng plant, 10,000 lux was the most adequate light intensity for the maximum photosynthesis of ginseng leaves and seasonal difference was not significant. The ginseng plants which were grown under 10 to 15 percent light transparent shading showed the highest photosynthesis ability. The photosynthesis ability of ginseng leaves was significantly decreased in September than June and the decreasing rate was higher at the ginseng plants planted on back rows than front rows. In June, the ginseng plants grown under 10 to 15 percent light transparent shading showed high respiration amount but in September, those grown under 20 to 25% light transparent shading showed the highest respiration. The amount of chlorophyll of ginseng leaf was significantly decreased by increasing light transparent rate of shading.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine proper method for alternative row culture of two varieties to increase seed yield in soybean. The test varieties 'Hwangkeumkong' and 'Taekwangkong' which were planted monoculture of each variety, seeding after mixing same number of seeds of two varieties, 1-row alternation, 2row alternation, 2-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 1-row 'Taekwangkong' and 1-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 2row 'Taekwangkong'. Alternative planting of 1-row 'Hwangkeumkong' and 1-row 'Taekwangkong' resulted the highest canopy height and reduced lodging most effectively. The terminal and the 9th leaves of 'Taekwangkong' in alternative variety planting showed the higher photosynthetic ability than pure stand of that. Alternative planting of two varieties in every other row increased yield by $17\%$ in 'Hwangkeumkong' and by $8\%$ in 'Taekwangkong'.

  • This present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll contents of Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Prunus leveilleana, Magnolia sieboldii, growing under four different light intensity regimes (full sun, and 64~73%, 35~42%, 9~16% of full sun). As result, Betula platyphylla var. japonica showed outstanding photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in full sun and showed low shade tolerance. Prunus leveilleana showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 64~73% or 35~42% of full sun and showed common shade tolerance. However, Magnolia sieboldii showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 35~42% of full sun, while the lowest in full sun. Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest shade tolerance compared to the other species. As the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll contents of all species increased with significant difference.
