  • A CCD camera and an LED light source were combined to fabricate a compact optical CT scanner for the therapeutic radiation dose evaluation of a polymer gel dosimeter. After the collimated beam emitted by the LED passed through aquarium, gel phantom, and telecentric lens, an image was collected by the CCD camera and reconstructed using MATLAB. By using a stepping motor and LabVIEW, the gel dosimeter was rotated at every $0.72^{\circ}$, and the time for collecting 500 slice images per a revolution was within 20 min. At a spatial frequency of 4.5 lp/mm of the optical CT scanner, the modulation transfer function value was 72%. The linear correlation coefficient of the optical CT scanner for the polymer gel dosimeter was 0.987.

  • The aim of this study is to develop a new software tool for 3D dose verification using $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel dosimeter. The tool included following functions: importing 3D doses from treatment planning systems (TPS), importing 3D optical density (OD), converting ODs to doses, 3D registration between two volumetric data by translational and rotational transformations, and evaluation with 3D gamma index. To acquire correlation between ODs and doses, CT images of a $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel with cylindrical shape was acquired, and a volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plan was designed to give radiation doses from 1 Gy to 6 Gy to six disk-shaped virtual targets along z-axis. After the VMAT plan was delivered to the targets, 3D OD data were reconstructed from 512 projection data from $Vista^{TM}$ optical CT scanner (Modus Medical Devices Inc, Canada) per every 2 hours after irradiation. A curve for converting ODs to doses was derived by comparing TPS dose profile to OD profile along z-axis, and the 3D OD data were converted to the absorbed doses using the curve. Supra-linearity was observed between doses and ODs, and the ODs were decayed about 60% per 24 hours depending on their magnitudes. Measured doses from the $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel were well agreed with the TPS doses at central region, but large under-doses were observed at peripheral region at the cylindrical geometry. Gamma passing rate for 3D doses was 70.36% under the gamma criteria of 3% of dose difference and 3 mm of distance to agreement. The low passing rate was resulted from the mismatching of the refractive index between the PRESAGE gel and oil bath in the optical CT scanner. In conclusion, the developed software was useful for 3D dose verification from PRESAGE gel dosimetry, but further improvement of the Gel dosimetry system were required.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the basic radiological characteristics of in-house polymer gel and commercially-available gel (BANGTM) gel dosimeters with a spectro-photometer to use a optical computed tomography (CT) scanner. We investigated the radiological characteristics including dose linearity, absorbance spectrum, dose rate dependency and inter-and intra-reproducibility at wavelengths of 590, 600 and 630 nm. The optimal dose linearities of two gel dosimeters showed R2 value of 0.939 and 0.948 at wavelengths of 590 nm and 600 nm, respectively. For two polymer gel dosimeters, there is no peak sensitivity within the range of all wavelengths in absorbance spectrum. For in-house gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency were within 5% for all wavelengths except for the dose rate of 100 MU/min. For BANGTM gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency showed an error range of ±5% for all wavelengths. The inter-and intra-reproducibility of two gel dosimeters were within the range of 2.5%. We have confirmed that the two gel dosimeters was appropriate for use with a optical CT scanner.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of digital models from 3 dimentional (3D) optical scanner and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: We obtained digital models from 11 pairs of stone casts using a 3D optical scanner and a CBCT, and compared the accuracy of the models. Results: The error range of average positive distance was 0.059 - 0.117 mm and negative distance was 0.066 - 0.146 mm. Statistically (P < 0.05), average positive distance was larger than $70{\mu}m$ and shorter than $100{\mu}m$, and that of negative distance was larger than $100{\mu}m$ and shorter than $120{\mu}m$. Conclusion: We concluded that the accuracy of digital models generated from CBCT is not appropriate to make final prostheses. However, it may be acceptable for provisional restorations and orthodontic diagnoses with respect to the accuracy of the digitalization.

  • The virtual bronchoscopy was implemented using chest CT images to visualize inside of tracheo-bronchial wall. The optical endoscopy procedures are invasive, uncomfortable for patients and sedation or anesthesia may be required. Also, they have serious side effects such as perforation, infection and hemorrhage. In order to determine the navigation path, we segmented the tracheo-bronchial wall from the chest CT image. We used the coordinates as a navigation path for virtual camera that were calculated from medial axis transformation. We used the perspective projection and marching cube algorithm to render the surface from volumetric CT image data. The tracheobronchial disease was classified into tracheobronchial stenosis causing from inflammation or lung cancer, bronchiectasis and bronchial cancer. The virtual bronchoscopy is highly recommended as a diagnosis tool with which the specific place of tracheobronchial disease can be identified and the degree of tracheobronchial disease can be measured qualitatively, Also, the virtual bronchoscopy can be used as an education and training tool for endoscopist and radiologist.
