The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of instrument compliance on the polymerization shrinkage stress measurements of dental composites. The contraction strain and stress of composites during light curing were measured by a custom made stress-strain analyzer, which consisted of a displacement sensor, a cantilever load cell and a negative feedback mechanism. The instrument can measure the polymerization stress by two modes: with compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is allowed, or without compliance mode in which the instrument compliance is not allowed. A flowable (Filtek Flow: FF) and two universal hybrid (Z100: Z1 and Z250: Z2) composites were studied. A silane treated metal rod with a diameter of 3.0 mm was fixed at free end of the load cell, and other metal rod was fixed on the base plate. Composite of 1.0 mm thickness was placed between the two rods and light cured. The axial shrinkage strain and stress of the composite were recorded for 10 minutes during polymerization. and the tensile modulus of the materials was also determined with the instrument. The statistical analysis was conducted by ANOVA. paired t-test and Tukey's test (${\alpha}<0.05$). There were significant differences between the two measurement modes and among materials. With compliance mode, the contraction stress of FF was the highest: 3.11 (0.13). followed by Z1: 2.91 (0.10) and Z2: 1.94 (0.09) MPa. When the instrument compliance is not allowed, the contraction stress of Z1 was the highest: 17.08 (0.89), followed by FF: 10.11 (0.29) and Z2: 9.46 (1.63) MPa. The tensile modulus for Z1, Z2 and FF was 2.31 (0.18), 2.05 (0.20), 1.41 (0.11) GPa, respectively. With compliance mode. the measured stress correlated with the axial shrinkage strain of composite: while without compliance the elastic modulus of materials played a significant role in the stress measurement.
The aim of this research was to study the effect of intermittent polymerization on marginal adaptation by comparing the marginal adaptation of intermittently polymerized composite to that of continuously polymerized composite. The materials used for this study were Pyramid (Bisco Inc., Schaumburg, U.S.A.) and Heliomolar (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) . The experiment was carried out in class II MOD cavities prepared in 48 extracted human maxillary premolars. The samples were divided into 4 groups by light curing method: group 1- continuous curing (60s light on with no light off), group 2-intermittent curing (cycles of 3s with 2s light on & 1s light off for 90s); group 3- intermittent curing (cycles of 2s with 1s light on & 1s light off for 120s); group 4- intermittent curing (cycles of 3s with 1s light on & 2s light off for 180s). Consequently the total amount of light energy radiated was same in all the groups. Each specimen went through thermo-mechanical loading (TML) which consisted of mechanical loading (720,000 cycles, 5.0 kg) with a speed of 120 rpm for 100hours and thermocycling (6000 thermocycles of alternating water of $50^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$). The continuous margin (CM) (%) of the total margin and regional margins, occlusal enamel (OE), vertical enamel (VE), and cervical enamel (CE) was measured before and after TML under a $\times200$ digital light microscope. Three-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was performed at 95% level of confidence to test the effect of 3 variables on CM (%) of the total margin: light curing conditions, composite materials and effect of TML. In each group, One-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test was additionally performed to compare CM (%) of regions (OE, VE CE). The results indicated that all the three variables were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Before TML, in groups using Pyramid, groups 3 and 4 showed higher CM (%) than groups 1 and 2, and in groups using Heliomolar. groups 3 and 4 showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). After TML, in both Pyramid and Heliomo)ar groups, group 3 showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05) CM (%) of the regions are significantly different in each group (p < 0.05). Before TML, no statistical difference was found between groups within the VE and CE region. In the OE region, group 4 of Pyramid showed higher CM (%) than group 2, and groups 2 and 4 of Heliomolar showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). After TML, no statistical difference was found among groups within the VE and CE region. In the OE region, group 3 of Pyramid showed higher CM (%) than groups 1 and 2, and groups 2,3 and 4 of Heliomolar showed higher CM (%) than group 1 (p < 0.05). It was concluded that intermittent polymerization may be effective in reducing marginal gap formation.

The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of several filling methods using strain gauges. In this study, a light-emitting diode(LED) curing unit(Elipar Freeligh2, 3M EPSE, USA) and plasma arc lamp(PAL) curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) were used for curing, Filtek $Z350^{TM}$(3M EPSE, USA) composite resin was used for the cavity filling. Sixty permanent bicuspid teeth, that were extracted for orthodontic treatment, were studied. The cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface and were filled using the following methods : 1) bulk filling, 2) parallel filling, 3) oblique filling The strain was recorded on the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces and the strain values were computed into stress values. The shear bond strength of each filling method was tested using a Micro Universal Testing machine. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain changes, all LED and PAL curing groups showed an increase on the buccal surface and a slow decrease as time elapsed. 2. In the strain changes of the mesial and distal surfaces, the decreases and increases were shown repeatedly and reduced as time elapsed. 3. There were no significant statistical strain changes among filling methods in the LED or PAL curing groups. 4. There were significant statistical strain changes between the LED and PAL curing groups on the buccal surface(p<0.05). 5. From the shear bond strength results, in the LED curing group, filling method 3 showed lower surface stress than filling method 1 and 2(p<0.05). In the PAL curing group, there were no significant statistical strain changes between each filling method. 6. The surface stress of each group was lower than the shear bond strength.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception and satisfaction of caregivers and parents after being covered by health insurance for light-curing composite resin fillings, and to contribute to the settlement of the expansion and coverage of health insurance. Methods: A survey was conducted on caregivers who visited two dental institutions in the Gyeonggi-do area, and parents who joined internet cafes (online communities) in the Gyeonggi-do area from June 2 to September 2, 2020. 225 responses were collected eventually, and 212 valid responses were used as analysis data. Results: 67.0% of the study subjects were aware of the permanent teeth resin fillings being covered by health insurance and the satisfaction was relatively high (91.5%). There was a statistically significant difference in the perception of permanent tooth resin filling benefits according to the child's oral condition (p=0.025) and the parents' own interest in oral health (p=0.039). Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to increase the accessibility to the initial treatment for dental care of children through active promotion of detailed items of permanent teeth resin fillings.

Newly developed curing units(plasma arc curing units) operate at relatively high intensity and are claimed to result in optimum properties of composite resin in a short curing time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microhardness and microleakage at the resin-tooth interface of two types of composite resins polymerized with visible light and plasma arc curing units. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows 1. Microhardness in each depth was shown to be higher in group AHL than AP3 & AP6. Group ZHL was lower than AP6 at surface(p<0.05) and had no statistically significant difference at 1mm and 2mm(p>0.05). In other depths, group ZHL was higher than ZP3 and ZP6(p<0.05). 2. The incremental reduction in microhardness with depth was shown to be in all group except in surface-1mm of group AHL and $1{\sim}2mm$ of group ZHL(p<0.05). 3. Degree of microleakage in all oops were shown to be higher in gingival margin than occlusal margin but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 4. Differences between curing methods in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. Differences between composite resins in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant differ once(p>0.05).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of light cured glass ionomer cement to enamel surface which treated with $37\%$ phosphoric acid, $10\%$ polyacrylic acid, $1.23\%$ acidulated phosphate fluoride gel and no etching agent. To compare the shear bond strength of glass ionomer cement, light-cured composite resin and chemically-cured composite resin were empoloyed as controls. Eight experiments groups were composed. 10 specimens of each group were bonded by metal bracket by tested in universal testing machine for shear bond strength, in stereoscope for adhesive remnants index. The data were evaluated statistically by SPSS/PC+. The results were as follows. 1. Among the groups of $37\%$ phosphoric acid treated and dry and bonded with light cured glass ionomer, light cured composite resin, and chemically cured composite resin, the shear bond strength of glass ionomer group showed no significant difference to the others, but the shear bond strength of chemically cured resin showed statistically lower than that of light cured resin (p<0.05). 2. The shear bond strengths of glass ionomer cement to enamel treated group with $1.23\%$ acidulated phosphate fluoride gel and $10\%$ polyacrylic acid and $37\%$ phosphoric acid showed statistically higher than that of no etched enamel group(p<0.U). 3. In the groups of glass ionomer cement, the presence of moisture was not significantly effect to the shear bond strength (p<0.05). 4. After debonding, no etched enamel group showed less residual materials on the enamel surface than the group of enamel etched with $37\%$ Phosphoric acid.

Acoustic emission (AE) signals were detected and analyzed in real time during the polymerization shrinkage of composite resin restoration in an artificial dental ring with a class I cavity. Most AE hit events were observed in the initial curing period of the 1st region with high contraction rate. The range of the $2^{nd}$ region for the stainless steel specimen was shorter than that for the PMMA specimen but longer than that for the human dentin specimen. AE hit events showed a blast-type signal having an amplitude in the range of 25.45 dB and a frequency band of 100.200 kHz or 240.300 kHz. These values of amplitude and frequency indicated the fracture of resin or of the adhesive layer.

This study was performed to evaluate wear characteristics of light-cured composites when opposed by human enamel. Seven light-cured restorative composites were selected and enamel cusps sectioned from premolars. All samples were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. 68.6 N of weight was loaded during the test. The measurements of vertical loss of enamel cusps, weight loss and volume loss of composites, and SEM observations of the polished and abraded surfaces were made after 30,000 cycles. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The highest hardness value of 70.4 was observed in the Spectrum group and the lowest value of 19.8 was observed in the Heliomolar group. Results of Tukey test showed that an overall significant difference was indicated except the Spectrum, Z100 and Clearfil AP-X groups(p<0.05). 2. Enamel showed the good abrasion resistance against the Heliomolar group of microfilled composite and the Palpique Toughwell group containing the submicron hybrid type spherical fillers. 3. The abrasive wear resistance of hybrid composites was improved with the decrease of mean particle size and hybrid of submicron particle fillers. 4. SEM observation of worn surfaces revealed the protrusion, attrition and missing of fillers, cracks developing and delamination in the matrix.

The composite resin, due to its esthetic quality, is considered the material of choice for restoration of anterior teeth. To get a satisfactory result in the composite resin restorations, it is necessary to choose right shade. At present, most of the commercial composite resins are based on the Vita Lumin shade guides or shade guides that are provided by their company, but color differences among them might be expected even using the same shade in various materials. This study is to measure color differences between various light-cured composite resins and shade guides and to provide the clinicians with information which may aid in improved color match of esthetic restoration. Four kinds of light-cured composite resins (Gradia Direct (GD), Z250 (Z250), Clearfil AP-X (AP-X), Esthet X (E X)) and shade guides with A2 and A3 shade were used. Three specimens of each material and one specimen of each shade guide were made. Each composite resin was filled into the Teflon mold (1.35 mm depth, 8 mm diameter), followed by compression, polymerization and polishing with wet sandpaper. Shade guides were grinded with polishing stones and rubber points to a thickness of approximately 1.35 mm. Color characteristics were performed with a spectrophotometer(color i5, GretagMacbeth, USA). A computer-controlled spectrophotometer was used to determine CIELAB coordinates ($L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$) of each specimen and shade guide. The CIELAB measurements made it possible to evaluate the amount of the color difference values (${\Delta}E^*ab$) between composite resins and shade guides. CIE standard D65 was used as the light source. The results were as follows : 1. Among the $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values of most of 4 kinds of composite resin specimens which are produced by same shade, there were significant differences(p<0.05). 2. Among all 4 kinds of composite resin specimens which are produced by same shade, there were color differences that is perceptible to human eye(${\Delta}E^*>3.3$). 3. Between most of composite resin specimens investigated and their corresponding shade guides, there were color differences that is perceptible to human eye(${\Delta}E^*>3.3$). 4. In the clinical environment, it is recommended that custom shade guides be made from resin material itself for better color matching. Shade guides supplied by manufacturers or Vita Lumin shade guide may not provide clinicians a accurate standard in matching color of composite resins, and there are perceptible color differences in most of products. Therefore, it is recommended that custom shade guides be made from resin material itself and used for better color matching.

Compomer, like resin composite, undergoes shrinkage during setting. But, due to the structure of glass ionomers and their hydrophilic nature, water sorption and subsequent expansion may lead to compensation of the shrinkage. The purpose of this study was to, evaluate the change of mliroleakage after 30day-water-storage of compomer and composite resin. 40 sound third molars were used for the microleakage test. Z-100 resin was used for the control groups(Group I and III), Dyract AP for the experimental groups(Group II and IV). The storage time was 1 day in Group I, II and 30days in Group III, IV. The result from the this study can be summarized as follows; 1. No significant difference could be found in microleakage of occlusal margin between each group(p>0.05). 2. In microleakage of gingival margin, no significant difference could be found between group I and II, and between group I and III (p>0.05). 3. Group IV was showed less microleakage than group II and group III in gingival margin(p<0.05).
