• In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings on the fiber re-coating methods. The fiber Bragg gratings were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 100 kGy at the dose rate of 104 Gy/min. In our experimental results, we confirmed that the fiber acrylate re-coating process leads to a slightly lower radiation sensitivity of FBGs.

  • We investigate strain transmissions of a surface bonded distributed optical fiber sensor considering strain variation according to positions. We first derive a strain transmission ratio depending on a wavelength of a strain distribution of the host structure from an analysis model. The strain transmission ratio is compared with numerical results obtained from the finite element method using ABAQUS. We find that the analytical results agree well with the numerical results. The strain transmission ratio is a function of a wavelength, i.e. the strain transmission ratio decreases (increases) as the wavelength of the host strain decreases (increases). Therefore, if an arbitrary strain distribution containing various wavelengths is given to a host structure, a distorted strain distribution will be observed in the distributed optical fiber sensor compare to that of the host structure, because each wavelength shows different strain transmission ratio. The strain transmission ratio derived in this study will be useful for accurately identifying the host strain distribution based on the signal of a distributed optical fiber sensor.

  • Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) like other optical fiber sensors also has the merit of embedding capability. To increase their actual value related to embedding capability, this paper reported the reliability and signal characteristics of FBGS embedded in composite laminates. The microphotographs of embedded optical fibers visualized the embedding environments of stripped optical fibers and coated optical fibers. Based on these microphotographs and cure monitoring performed using FBGs, we could understand that the main cause breaking the unique Bragg condition of low-birefrigence FBG were residual stress artier curing and reported the stale of stress/strain of optical fiber quantitatively. The cure monitoring also showed the history of splitting peak of a stripped FBG along cure processing. In addition, we could obtain a transverse insensitive grating(TIG) with ease by recoating a stripped FBG. TIG has good advantage for real-time signal processing.

  • We investigated an interrogation system for fiber Bragg gratings by using a 50-GHz 96-channel array waveguide grating. Linearity of the sensitivity (the wavelength shift in response to the change in strain or temperature) is achieved for a Bragg grating of sufficiently wide bandwidth. The present wavelength-monitoring system could measure the change in Bragg wavelength with a resolution of 0.01 nm, at intervals of 10 seconds. When this interrogation system was used for a linear array of 12 acrylaterecoated fiber gratings, the wavelength sensitivity changed from 0.018 nm/℃ to 0.01 nm/℃ when the operating temperature changed from -25℃ to 85℃.

  • This study was focused on developing an optical sensor that monitors ultraviolet (UV) light. Recently, we proposed and demonstrated a novel, highly sensitive UV sensor based on a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). To ensure that the incident UV light is focused on the FBG surface, the sensor was coated with an azobenzene polymer material that acts as a UV-induced stretchable functional material, in combination with a cylindrical focal lens. In this study we have improved the sensitivity of the sensor by employing a cylindrical focal mirror as a curved reflector, to refocus the UV light passing through the FBG. We considered the performance of several different types of reflectors and chose the optimal radius of curvature for the reflector. Compared to the UV sensor without an auxiliary device, the sensitivity of the FBG sensor with a focal lens and a curved reflector was 15 times as high.
