Oriental herbal liquor (Yakju) is a type of Korean traditional alcoholic beverage that uses Nuruk and oriental herbs for fermentation. The purpose of this study was to develop cosmetic ingredients using Jubak, which is a by-product of alcoholic fermentation of oriental herbal liquor. To investigate antioxidant, whitening, and anti-aging effects of Jubak, we prepared extract of Jubak and its solvent fractions. Ethyl acetate fraction (KSD E4-3) showed the most prominent free radical [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)] scavenging activity ($SC_{50}$: 0.75 mg/mL). KSD E4-3 significantly inhibited in vitro mushroom tyrosinase activity ($IC_{50}$: 0.82 mg/mL) and reduced the melanin contents in mouse melanoma melanocyte, B16F10 cells. KSD E4-3 down-regulated protein expression of tyrosinase related proteins (TRP)-1, -2, which play key roles in melanogenesis. For anti-aging effects, inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) expression was evaluated using human keratinocyte, HaCaT cells. Treatment of HaCaT cells with KSD E4-3 reduced expression of MMP-1, -2, -9 and inhibited proteolytic activities of MMP-2, -9. These results suggest that KSD E4-3 induces down-regulation of cellular melanogenesis and protects against photoaging induced by UVB-induced damage. Thus KSD E4-3 could potentially be a valuable cosmetic ingredient.

This paper described the formulation of functional cosmetics and evaluation of anti-wrinkle efficacy in clinical test. Cosmetics were formulated with highly purified $\beta$-carotene obtained from the culture broth of recombinant E.coli cells. Edible oil for solubilizing $\beta$-carotene, vitamine E for long-term storage, detergent/stabilizer (2.0%) for the complete formation of oil/water emulsion, dimethicone (0.35%) for good skin care, and sorbitol for skin moisturizer were also added as ingredients. Physical or chemical degradation of formulated products stored at $0^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, or $40^{\circ}C$ was not observed for 60-day testing period. In clinical test, 68% of applicants observed wrinkle decrease after 8-week treatment. This result indicates that newly formulated cosmetics have strong potential for improving wrinkle skin care.
Hydrogen($H_2$) as a clean, and renewable energy carrier will be served an important role in the future energy economy. Several biological $H_2$ production processes are known and currently under development, ranging from direct bio-photolysis of water by green algae, indirect bio-photolysis by cyanobacteria including the separated two stage photolysis using the combination of green algae and photosynthetic microorganisms or green algae alone, dark anaerobic fermentation by fermentative bacteria, photo-fermentation by purple bacteria, and water gas shift reaction by photosynthetic or fermentative bacteria. In this paper, biological $H_2$ production processes, that are being explored in fundamental and applied research, are reviewed.
Numerous observations revealed strong evidence of increased middle ultraviolet radiation or UV-B (280 ~ 320 nm) at the earth's surface resulting from stratospheric ozone depletion. UV is the waveband of electromagnetic radiation which is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, thus causing damage to living systems. It has been recorded in the East Sea, Korea that solar UV-B impinging on the ocean surface penetrates seawater to significant depths. Recent researches showed that exposure to UV-B for as short as 2h at the ambient level (2.0 Wm$^{-2}$) decreased macroalgal growth and photosynthesis and destroyed photosynthetic pigments. These may suggest that UV-B could be an important environmental factor to determine algal survival and distribution. Some adaptive mechanisms to protect macroalgae from UV-damage have been found, which include photoreactivation and formation of UV-absorbing pigments. Post-illumination of visible light mitigated UV-induced damage in laminarian young sporophytes with blue the most effective waveband. The existence of UV-B absorbing pigments has been recognized in the green alga, Ulva pertusa and the red alga, Pachymeniopsis sp., which is likely to exert protective function for photosynthetic pigments inside the thalli from UV-damage. Further studies are however needed to confirm that these mechanisms are of general occurrence in seaweeds. Macroalgae together with phytoplankton are the primary producers to incorporate about 100 Gt of carbons per year, and provide half of the total biomass on the earth. UV-driven reduction in macroalgal biomass, if any, would therefore cause deleterious effects on marine ecosystem. The ultimate impacts of increasing UV-B flux due to ozone destruction are still unknown, but the impression from UV studies made so far seems to highlight the importance of setting up long-term monitoring system for us to be able to predict and detect the onset of large -scale deterioration in aquatic ecosystem.

To develop a high efficiency plant regeneration system from in vitro cultures of strawberry, cv. Yeobong, petiole and leaf explants were cultured on MS basal medium containing a combination of 0.5 mg/L IBA and 3.2 mg/L kinetin or zeatin or benzyl amino purine (BAP) for 6 weeks, and leaf explants with dark pretreatment for a week ($T_1$), 2 weeks ($T_2$), and 4 weeks ($T_3$) were cultured on medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L IBA and 3.2 mg/L zeatin under 16 hr photoperiod for 6 weeks. Shoot organogenesis was observed from the greenish calli containing minimal anthocyanin formed at proximal cutting edges of the leaf explant (57%) when cultured adaxial side on the medium, whereas was directly formed from a cutting edges of petiole explant (6.3%). Frequency of callus formation and shoot organogenesis at large size of leaf explant ($1.0{\sim}1.5\;cm^2$) was higher than small size ($0.5{\sim}1.0\;cm^2$), and dark pretreatment significantly improved the frequency of leaf explants that produced calli and shoots. The maximum frequency (87%) for shoot organogenesis was obtained from the leaf explants that transferred to a 16 hr photoperiod condition after the initial 4 weeks dark period. The improved frequency (87%) in comparision with control without dark pretreatment (27%). When the shoots were transferred to 1/2 MS basal medium, formed roots with 20 d of culture. The rooted plants were subsequently transferred to the pots and to the field.
The albino plants of tobacco (Nicotiana tobacum L. cv. BY-4) were isolated from seed populations that were induced by heavy-ion ($^{14}N$) beam irradiation to proembryo and the in vitro growth and differentiation have been characterized. The in vitro cultured albino plants showed significant reduction of chlorophyll content and possessed larger number of stomata on both upper and lower epidermis than that of wild-type plants. Stem growth of the mutants remained dwarfed, however, the internode recovered its normal length after GA$_3$ treatment (10.0mg/L) on the MS medium containing sucrose under continuous light. When explants of leaf blades of albino plants were cultured, multiple shoots formed directly on MS medium containing 1.0mg/L of BAP or kinetin and a large number of calli were induced on the MS medium containing 1.0mg/L NAA or 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D. The albino calli regenerated multiple albino plantlets in the MS medium containing 0.1mg/L NAA + 1.0 mg/L BAP. No significant differences between the wild-type and albino plants were detected in the multiple shoot induction, callus formation from the explants and the plantlets regeneration from calli. In addition, albino plants have a similar organogenesis Pattern to that of the wild-type in the media with different combinations of NAA (0 to 5.0mg/L) and BAP (0 to 5.0mg/L) treatment. These results indicate that the albino mutant has the same normal regeneration ability as that of wild-type, although the mutant has lost functions in photosynthesis, such as pigmentation.

Newly developed curing units(plasma arc curing units) operate at relatively high intensity and are claimed to result in optimum properties of composite resin in a short curing time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microhardness and microleakage at the resin-tooth interface of two types of composite resins polymerized with visible light and plasma arc curing units. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows 1. Microhardness in each depth was shown to be higher in group AHL than AP3 & AP6. Group ZHL was lower than AP6 at surface(p<0.05) and had no statistically significant difference at 1mm and 2mm(p>0.05). In other depths, group ZHL was higher than ZP3 and ZP6(p<0.05). 2. The incremental reduction in microhardness with depth was shown to be in all group except in surface-1mm of group AHL and $1{\sim}2mm$ of group ZHL(p<0.05). 3. Degree of microleakage in all oops were shown to be higher in gingival margin than occlusal margin but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 4. Differences between curing methods in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. Differences between composite resins in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant differ once(p>0.05).

A rapid, simple and sensitive validated spectrophotometric methods have been described for the assay of neomycin and streptomycin either in pure form or in pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed methods were based on the oxidation of the studied drugs by a known excess of potassium permanganate in acidic medium and estimating the unreacted permanganate with amaranth dye (method A), acid orange II (method B), indigocarmine (method C), and methylene blue (method D), in the same acid medium at a suitable lmax=521, 485, 610 and 664 nm, respectively. Beers law is obeyed in the concentration range of 5-10 and 2-7 mg mL-1 for neomycin and streptomycin, respectively. The apparent molar absorptivity and sandell sensitivity values are in the range 5.47-6.20104, 2.35-2.91105 L mol-1 cm-1 and 7.57-8.59, 5.01-6.2 ng cm-2 for neomycin and streptomycin, respectively. Different variables affecting the reaction were studied and optimized. The proposed methods were applied successfully to the determination of the examined drugs either in a pure or pharmaceutical dosage forms with good accuracy and precision. No interferences were observed from excipients and the results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained using the official methods.
Mitochondria in the L. edodes was separated and purified by stepped sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The activity of mitochondrial ATP synthase has been investigated during various illumination times at each wavelength within the range of 400 nm to 700 nm. The stimulation of above activity increased by two times compared with nonilluminated control group when the illumination was given for 15 seconds at 470 nm wavelength. The optimal pH and temperature of this light-induced mitochondrial ATP synthase were 7.5 and $54^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activity of this enzyme increased by 26%, 25% and 14%, respectively, when there were 1 mmole $Fe^{3+}$, 0.5 mmole $Fe^{2+}$, and 5 mmole ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion, and was inhibited by 5 mmole $Co^{2+}$, 5 mmole $Mn^{2+}$, 1 mmole $Ca^{2+}$, 0.1 mmole $Na^+$, 5 mmole $CN^-$, and 0.1 mmole ${CO_3}^{2-}$ ion. But $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ion did not affect the activity of enzyme.
