  • Soil samples collected at the Kangwon and Donghae mines were investigated for the characterization of heavy metals using physicochemical and mineralogical properties. Arsenic (As) concentrations of soil samples sieved above 18 mesh and under 325 mesh at the Kangwon mine are 250.5 to 445.7 ppm, respectively. For soil samples sieved above 18 mesh at the Donghae mine, the concentrations of As, Pb, and Zn are 70.4, 1,055, and 781.9, while 117.7 ppm for As, 2,295 ppm for Pb, and 1,346 ppm for Zn are shown for the samples sieved under 325 mesh. XRD and SEM data indicated that the samples from the Kangwon mine included quartz, mica, albite, chlorite, magnetite, and amphibole while those from the Donghae mine contained quartz, mica, kaolinite, chlorite, amphibole, and rutile. SEM-EDS showed that magnetite found in the samples at the Kangwon mine was positively correlated with arsenic concentrations whereas ilmenite in the samples from the Donghae mine contained only small amount of As. Our results suggest that physicochemical and mineralogical characterization plays an important role in optimizing recovery treatments of soils contaminated in mine development areas.

  • This study presents a method to calculate carbon dioxide emissions of diesel vehicles operated in an underground mine using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). An underground limestone mine in Korea was selected as the study area. A GIS database was constructed to represent the haulage roads as a 3D vector network. The speed of dump trucks at each haulage road was investigated to determine the carbon dioxide emission factor. The amount of carbon dioxide emissions related to the truck's haulage work could be calculated by considering the carbon dioxide emission factor at each haulage road and the haulage distance determined by GIS-based optimal route analysis. Because diesel vehicles are widely utilized in the mining industry, the method proposed in this study can be used and further improved to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in mining sites.

  • Mine reclamation project is closely related to human's past mining activities and the current human's living environment. It is a reason for the national management. In order to efficiently carry out mine reclamation projects, a precise investigation and analysis of the underground space of the abandoned mine is required. Korea MINE RECLAMATION Corp. is developing a practical technology that is effective in investigating and actually measuring underground cavities. MIRECO EYE system is an exploration equipment for 3D digitization and figuration of underground cavities. As combining a laser, sonar and image acquisition technology, it enables access to information about inaccessible underground cavities and effective management of subsidence risk of mined area. and currently it is also utilized for various purposes in related areas such as investigating urban sinkholes. This article is precise numerical and geometric information analysis obtained through MIRECO EYE system.

  • The development of open-pit mines leads to large-area topographical changes in highland forests and can lead to severe deterioration of forests, requiring continuous monitoring. The drone photogrammetry is performed at a lower altitude than the existing manned aerial photogrammetry, and thus has a relatively high accuracy. The purpose of this study is to construct spatial information of large open pit mine using drone photogrammetry and to evaluate the accuracy and utilization of the results. The accuracy of the drone photogrammetric results was 0.018 ~ 0.063m in the horizontal direction and 0.027m ~ 0.088m in the vertical direction. These results satisfy the permissible accuracy of 1: 1,000 digital topographic map and it can be used for open mine monitoring. The geospatial information of the open pit mine can be used in various ways, and it can be used to monitor the quantitative change of a specific area for time series change through data management by periodic data acquisition. If drone photogrammetry is applied to open-pit mine monitoring in the future, work time and cost can be greatly reduced compared to the conventional GNSS or total station method, and the work efficiency can be greatly improved because more visible data can be generated.

  • Recently, the possibility of promoting inter-Korean economic cooperation is increasing because the tension between South and North Korea is being reduced. Consequently, the interest in North Korea's mine development projects is growing as one of the aspects of inter-Korean economic cooperation. In the promotion of cooperation in mining development, mine hazard risk management should be considered. However, there is a lack of information pertaining to mine hazards in North Korea. To this end, this study was performed to determine the status of mining-related hazards in 12 mines in North Korea by using the image analysis feature of Google Earth. From the results obtained, we observed some mining-related hazards such as tailing dam failures, yellow boy phenomenon, and land subsidence.
