  • In this study, we studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs written in photo-sensitive and commercial Ge-doped single-mode optical fibers. The FBGs were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 17.8 kGy at the dose rate of 300 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the lowest Bragg wavelength shift (18 pm) was obtained by a grating written in photosensitive fiber without $H_2$-loading.

Also, we confirmed that the H2 loading process has considerably more influence on the Bragg wavelength shift change under gamma radiation than $GeO_2$ contents in the fiber core.

  • We studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs by a variation of grating the fabrication parameters. The FBGs were fabricated in a different UV KrF laser intensity using the same boron co-doped photo-sensitive fiber and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 33.8 kGy. According to the experimental data and analysis results, We confirmed that the laser intensity for grating inscription has a highly effect on the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs and the radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift by the change of laser process condition showed a difference more than about 30 %.

• A variable optical attenuator with a bending-sensitive fiber (BSF) that can be used in optical networks is developed. The proposed BSF consists of inner core, outer core, center dip and cladding. The proposed BSF is also very sensitive to mechanical perturbation, such as bending and pressure, making the light propagating in the BSF easily controlled and attenuated. The fabricated fiber-type variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) consisted of the BSF in a rectangular rubber ring with a fixed bend radius (BR) in a steady state. The variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) was able to attenuate the optical power by more than about -38㏈ with the gradient -88.4[㏈$.$$cm^{-1}$ /] at (1540∼1560nm) based m adjusting the mechanical pressure applied to the upper surface of the rectangular rubber ring with the bent BSF. According to the experimental results when using the proposed VOAFB, the optical power was easily controlled by adjusting mechanical pressure and produced an insertion loss of 0.68㏈, polarization loss of 0.5㏈, and return loss of less than -60㏈.

  • Dielectric thin film mirrors are embedded in multimode and single-mode fibers by a fusion splicing technique. The fibers with $45{\circ}$ angled embedded mirrors serve as ultra-compact directional couplers with low excess optical loss of 0.2 dB for multimode and 0.5 dB for single mode at 1.3 ${\mu}m$ and excellent mechanical properties. The reflectance is wavelength dependent and strongly polarization depencient. Far-field scans of the reflected output power measured with a white-light source show a pattern which is almost circularly symmetric with aspect ratio of 1.09 at 5% of the peak power. The splitting ratio in a multimode coupler measured with a diode laser source is much less dependent on input coupling conditions than in conventional fused biconical-taper couplers, indicating that these couplers are less susceptible to modal noise occuring in optical fiber communication systems. Spectral properties of multilayer internal mirrors normal to the fiber axis have been investigated experimentally, and a matrix analysis has been used to explain the results.

  • Fiber-optic sensor (FOS) using bending-sensitive fiber (BSF which detects physical variables according to the variation of fiber-bending is proposed. BSF is already used in variable optical attenuator. Three-dimensional finite difference beam propagation method (3D FD-BPM) is used to investigate the bending loss of BSF. Then, the results of bending experiment with FOS consisting of BSF is compared to numerical results of 3D FD-BPM. In particular, the optical power of fabricated FOS with BSF varies from -ldB to -2OdB when pressure given to the upper side of FOS changes from 0 MPa to 0.005 MPa, while the FOS consists of SMF shows no change of optical power at the same condition.

  • Optical fiber sensors have shown a potential to serve real time health monitoring of the structures. They can be easily embedded or attached to the structures and are not affected by the electro-magnetic field. Furthermore, they have the flexibility of the sensor size and very highly sensitive. In this study, we conducted several laboratory and field tests using a novel optical sensor based on Brillouin scattering. One of the advantages of this technique is that the bare fiber itself acts as sensing element without any special fiber processing or preparation. Test results have shown that BOTDR can be a great solution for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures.

  • The most sensitive part of the installed optical fiber fable is the optical loss variation of the splicing part according to the environmental changes. This paper presents the details of the experimental results of the external environmental changes on optical loss, such as bending, temperature variation, temperature variation after water osmosis and vibration. Through the bending test of optical fiber, rapid increase of optical loss was measured within the radius of 30mm. The result of optical loss variation within the temperature range of $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ is less than 0.02dB. It was confirmed that the maximum optical loss increased up to 0.2dB in case of water osmosis within the temperature range of $-40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. There is small optical loss variation of 0.01dB under the 1mm vibration test. The experimental results of this paper can be used as the reference data for the design of the optical fiber cable splicing enclosure to protect the optical loss variation due to environmental changes.
