  • The modal analyses on the phenocryst phases and the normative mineralogies from the bulk chemical analyses record that the volcanic rocks related to the Yangsan caldera might been derived from compositionally zoned magma. The volcanic rocks show linearly continuous mineralogical gradients, not only totally in the relations between $SiO_2$ and proportion of phenocryst content, but also within each rock unit in the relations between total phenocryst content and the proportion, Q-Ab-Or and Q-An(Ab-Or) diagrams. The roughly gradational modal variations of the phenocryst phases are shown upward within each rock unit. However, the contents and proportion of the phenocrysts in the Yangsan Tuff and the Hwajeri Formation represent the zigzaggedly undulatory variations. The continuous mineralogical gradients without large gaps define a large zoned magma system in the pre-eruptive, later precollapse and postcollapse magma chambers respectively. The zigzagged variations reflect the intermittent eruptive pulses representing any time gaps.

  • The granites in the Jeomchon area can be divided into hornblende biotite granite (Hbgr), deformed biotite granite (Dbgr), deformed pinkish biotite granite(Dpbgr), biotite granite (Btgr), and granite porphyry(Gp). These granites show metaluminous, 1-type and calc-alkaine characteristics from their whole-rock chemistry. Hbgr and Dbgr belong to ilmenite-series granitoids, but Gp to magnetite-series. Dpbgr and Btgr show the intermediate nature between ilmenite- and magnetite-series. Tectonic discriminations indicate that Hbgr and Dbgr were formed in active continental margin environment, whereas Dpbgr, Btgr, and Gp in post-orogenic and/or anorogenic rift-related environment. From the Harker diagrams major oxide contents of Hbgr and Dbgr show a continuous variation with $SiO_2$, indicating that they are genetically correlated with each other. On the other hand, any correlation of major oxides variation cannot be recognized among Dpbgr, Btgr and Gp. It seems like that Hbgr and Dbgr were derived from a same parent granitic magma, judging from their occurrence of outcrop, mineral composition as well as whole-rock chemistry. Variation trends of major oxide contents between Hbgr and Baegnok granodiorite are very similar and continuous. If the two granites were derived from a cogenetic magma, there exists a possibility that the granitic bodies had been separated by Btgr and Gp of Cretaceous age. Three stages of the granitic intrusions are understood in the Jeomchon area. After the intrusion of Hbgr and Dbgr during middle to late Paleozoic time, Dpbgr emplaced into the area next, and finally Btgr and Gp intruded during Cretaceous time. Tectonic movement accompanying shear and/or thrust deformation seems likely to have occurred bewteen the intrusions of Dpbgr and Btgr.

  • In this study, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex is interpreted based on the mineralogical and physical changes of soil samples fired at different temperature. When soil samples were burned at 500 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, phase transition of clay minerals affected the mineralogical composition and microstructure, which leaded to alteration of physical features as color, water absorption and porosity. Mineralogical composition can be assumed to vary with the temperature by mineral phase stability, however, color, water absorption, porosity and microstructure had slow change under $1,000^{\circ}C$, and had rapid change from 1,000 to $1,200^{\circ}C$. Upon the mineral and physical alteration of soil, firing temperature of bricks from the Songsanri tomb complex were estimated. Some bricks were over fired at temperature more than $1,200^{\circ}C$, some high-burned bricks were fired from 1,100 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, some bricks were fired by 900 to $1,000^{\circ}C$ and some bricks ere assumed not to be fired. Henceforward mineralogical and physical study can be applied to interpretate more precise firing temperature.

  • The estuary of Nakdong River area including Noksan industrial complex and Busan New Port is composed of thick unconsolidified sediments containing abundant clay, and thus is a potential hazardous area of ground subsidence. We analyzed mineral compositions and geotechnical properties of the clay sediments that sampled from 4 boreholes of the area, and examined vertical variations and their correlations. The results showed correlations between some mineral constituents and geotechnical properties of clay sediments. A positive correlation showed between quartz content and wet unit weight, whereas a negative correlation showed between quartz content and liquid limit. Feldspar content and water content showed a negative correlation, whereas content of clay minerals and liquid limit showed a positive correlation. And also, there is a negative correlation between content of clay minerals and wet unit weight. Correlation equations are obtained from the multiple regression analyses among plastic index, content of clay mineral, smectite and clay fraction.

  • Glauconization was investigated by morphological and chemical analysis of glaucony from the Pohang Tertiary marine sediments. The glaucony, which is present sparsely in turbidite sandstones, shows two distinct stages in morphology and chemistry. Crystallization of glaucony starts preferentially from the interior of pellet-like grains, then to the outer region of the grains with increasing K and Fe, and decreasing Al. Furthermore, smectite-like glaucony is evolved into illite-like glaucony through interstratified glauconite-smectite with increases in K and Al, and decrease in Fe.

  • A study on the mineralogy and internal features have been carried out on a sample of ferromanganese crust from a Central Pacific seamout. The distribution of manganese mineral vernadite($\delta$-MnO$\sub$2/)in the different layers indicates typical hydrogenous origin under a continuous change of growth conditions during crustal firmation. Various internal structures are discerned within the crust which may be attributed to different growth conditions. The growth structure changes and the distinct break in the formation of the crust at about 2 depth are assumed to be the results of Miocene to mid-Pleistocene global palaeoceanographic events.

  • This study is for finding a geoscientific factor for clarifying the source soil of the ancient earthenware finding. The used samples were the earthenware, soil and rocks, which were collected at the Gyeongju, Gyeongsan and Haman area. The chemical and mineralogical study for the samples were carried out for understanding the change of mineralogical and chemical composition among them. The mineralogical compositions of the earthenware are different from those of the soils from the surrounding area, which suggests that the mineralogical approach for clarifying the source soil of the earthenware should be difficult. Major element compositions of the earthenware also are different from those of the surrounding soils, which suggests that the comparison of the chemical composition using the major elements might be difficult for deducing the source soil of the earthenware. However, PAAS-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns and Nd model ages among the rock, soils and earthenware from the same sampling sites show similar characteristics one another compared to those of the major element compositions. Nd-Sr isotopic systematics among the earthenware, soils and rocks also show a close relationship. Our results suggest that REE and Nd-Sr isotope geochemistry might be more useful than the other geochemical technique in clarifying the source soils of the ancient earthenware.

  • The phase changes and variations of elemental contents in hematite medicinal mineral were investigated by a traditional processing operation including heating and quenching in vinegar. Hematite was processed at $650^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ through at least 5 processing cycles. Metal extraction tests in water were carried out with the processed hematite. Heating and quenching in vinegar could not change the phase of hematite. The effect of this traditional method was not clear because there were no variational trends between extracted elements and the number of processing cycles at $650^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$. However, the traditional processing operation of heating and quenching in vinegar was very effective to change the hematite mineral towards soft and easily crushing medicinal material.
