  • This numerical study is to investigate the seepage characteristics of the side of the structure in the event of leakage from the structural connection part of the drainage structure installed through the enlarged levee, and to analyze the effect of piping on the stabilization of the levee by the lateral penetration behavior. To take into account lateral seepage behavior, 2D and 3D numerical analyses were performed on the same model, and the effect of lateral seepage was analyzed to assess the validity of the numerical analysis. As a result, when leakage occurs and a lateral seepage is considered with the gate located on the riverside land, the maximum pore water pressure near the leakage point of the structure has been reduced by half compared to the normal seepage state where no leakage occurred. Excessive variation in the pore pressure was shown at the lower part of the structure, especially if lateral seepage is not considered. As a water level rises to the high water level, it shows the hydraulic gradient was larger than the critical hydraulic gradient, which will be vulnerable to long-term piping. If a gate is located in the inland and side seepage is not considered, the effect of the seepage water such as hydraulic gradient and seepage velocity is underestimated compared with the case of considering side seepage. The maximum hydraulic gradient is relatively small when lateral seepage is neglected if a gate is located in the riverside land and there was might be a risk of piping or loss of material. In addition, the period exceeding the critical hydraulic gradient was interpreted as a short time zone. As a result, it is considered that the possibility of piping can be underestimated if side seepage is ignored.

  • Cracks in concrete generally interconnect flow paths and increase concrete permeability. The increase in concrete permeability due to the progression of cracks allows more water or aggressive chemical ions to penetrate into concrete, facilitating deterioration. The goal of this research is to study the relationship between crack width and water permeability of cracked concrete. Tests have been carried out as a function of hydraulic pressure (0.1 $\sim$ 2 bar) and crack width (30 $\sim$ 100 ${\mu}m$). Splitting and reuniting method was used to manufacture cracked concrete specimens with controlled crack width. Crack widths are checked by using a microscope($\times$100). The results show a considerable increase of water transport with crack width and hydraulic pressure. When the crack width is smaller than 50${\mu}m$, the crack width has little effect on concrete permeability. Due to the autogenous healing, the water flow through the crack gradually reduces with time. When crack width is 100 ${\mu}m$ and hydraulic pressure increase from 0.1 bar to 0.25 bar, concrete permeability increases rapidly about 190 times according to the test results.

  • Concrete materials subjected to impact by high velocity projectiles exhibit responses that differ from those when they are under static loading. Projectiles generate localized effects characterized by penetration of front, spalling of rear and perforation as well as more widespread crack propagation. The magnitude of damage depends on a variety of factors such as material properties of the projectile, impact velocity, the mass and geometry as well as the material properties of concrete specimen size and thickness, reinforcement materials type and method of the concrete target. In this study, penetration depth of front, spalling thickness of rear and effect of spalling suppression of concrete by fiber reinforcement was evaluated according to compressive strength of concrete. As a result, it was similar to results of the modified NDRC formula and US ACE formula that the more compressive strength is increased, the penetration depth of front is suppressed. On the other hand, the increase in compressive strength of concrete does not affect spalling of rear suppression. Spalling of rear is controlled by the increase of flexural, tensile strength and deformation capacity.

  • Characteristics and changes of groundwater qualify were investigated in a riverbank filtration area at Daesan-myeon, Changwon City, Korea. The total dissolved solids (TDS) in groundwater samples collected in October were much less than that in March, indicating the mixing with recharged water from precipitation, as well as the changes of dissolved oxygen profiles at monitoring wells from March to October. Redox processes at depths appeared to trigger Fe and Mn contamination of groundwater in riverbank deposits. Amorphous oxyhydroxides md carbonate minerals such as $MnCO_3$ were probably the reactive phases for dissolved Fe and Mn, respectively. Groundwater contamination by nitrate-nitrogen $(NO_3-N)$ was controlled by the redox processes and subsequent denitrification at the sampled depths. Distribution of $NO_3-N$ concentrations at monitoring wells suggested that the nitrate contaminants were originated from agricultural facilities on the riverbank deposits. Some of monitoring wells, DS-2, D-2, DS-3, SJ-1, and SJ-3, were only partially penetrated into the sand/gravel aquifer, and subsequently, could not fully function to detect the water quality changes for the pumping wells. Proper measures, with regulating agricultural activities in the riverbank deposits, should be carried out to prevent groundwater contamination of the riverbank filtration area.

  • The stability of underground mine cavity is closely related with pillar strength. The vulnerability of pillars can be judged and reinforced if the pillar strength is known. The pillar strength is affected by characteristics of discontinuities and shape of a pillar. The change of pillar strength due to a discontinuity passing through the center of a pillar, width-to-height ratio of a pillar and small joints existing within a pillar was analyzed using PFC 3D. The result showed that the pillar strength is influenced by dip angle of a discontinuity and it increases as width-to-height ratio of a pillar increases. The pillar strength decreases as the number of contained joints increases. The relationship between total trace length observable from the pillar surface and the pillar strength was regressed with exponential function. The correlation coefficient of the regression was high enough so that pillar strength can be predicted using total trace length if a joint set exists in a pillar. Lastly, the method to estimate the strength of a pillar that includes two joint sets was proposed if the joint dip angles are 60°, 30°. The method also need total trace lengths of two joint sets.

  • The Nanji landfill is one of the biggest uncontrolled landfill in terms of its size and scale in the world. Because the landfill was constructed on the very vulnerable alluvial deposit installing no pollution control systems such as bottom liner and leachate collection systems, it has caused a serious adverse effect to near-by groundwater and surface water systems. A through remedial investigation comprising plume detection and site-characterization was performed to design the remedial measure. As a part the investigation, comprehensive water quality study was conducted, using ten existing observation wells and one bundle type monitoring well, to determine the contaminant indicators for the plume delineation and to define the vertical and horizontal variation of specific contaminants via distances from the landfill. The results clearly shows that EC and temperature are a good pollution indicators and the vertical concentrations of specific contaminants measured in the fully screened wells are 20 to 90% more than those measured at the same depth in bundle type well which is located just 2 m apart. This paper presents a cost effective monitoring and sampling method to define the contaminant plume and obtain a basic data for leachate control measures.

  • As the height of buildings rises, new structural systems are being applied other than theexisting S, RC, and SRC to decrease the weight of buildings and to make their construction more efficient, CFT structureshad been applied in many building construction projects due to their superior structural performance and construction efficiency. CFT structures need a diaphragm to harmoniously transmit the beam flange load to the column and the opponent beam in connections. Especially, on the right and left sides of the column other beams are connected, The establishment of a diaphragm for the lower part flange load delivery of the beam and guarantee for concrete filing capacity difficulty have (What does this mean?). In this paper, connection details are proposed in the form of a welded vertical plate with a circular hole on the CFT column's interior to harmoniously transmit the lower-part beam flange load to the column and the opponent beam. Thesediaphragm details use the concrete anchor effect in the beam flange load delivery, with the concrete-filled CFT column interior piercing the hole of the perforated plate, and a perforated board is established vertically to improve the concrete filling capacity. To analyze the structural performance of the proposed connection details, five simple tension specimens were made with the following parameters: with our without vertical and horizontal perforated plates, shear hole number, concrete filled or not, thickness of the perforated plate, etc. Then experimental tests were performed on these specimens.

  • Cement composites subjected to high-velocity projectile shows local failure and it can be suppressed by improvement of flexural toughness with reinforcement of fiber. Therefore, researches on impact resistance performance of cement composites are in progress and a number of types of fiber reinforcement are being developed. Since bonding properties of fiber with matrix, specific surface area and numbers of fiber are different by fiber reinforcement type, mechanical properties of fiber reinforced cement composites and improvement of impact resistance performance need to be considered. In this study, improvement of flexural toughness and failure reduction effect by impact of high-velocity projectile have been evaluated according to fiber type by mixing steel fiber, polyamide, nylon and polyethylene which are have different shape and mechanical properties. As results, flexural toughness was improved by redistribution of stress and crack prevention with bridge effect of reinforced fibers, and scabbing by high-velocity impact was suppressed. Since it is possible to decrease scabbing limit thickness from impact energy, thickness can be thinner when it is applied to protection. Scabbing of steel fiber reinforced cement composites was occurred and it was observed that desquamation of partial fragment was suppressed by adhesion between fiber and matrix. Scabbing by high-velocity impact of synthetic fiber reinforced cement composites was decreased by microcrack, impact wave neutralization and energy dispersion with a large number of fibers.

  • For shallow tunnel constructions, settlement of the ground surface is a main issue. Recent technical developments in shield TBM tunneling technique have enabled a decrease in such settlements based on tunneling with ground deformation controls. For this objective, the tail void grouting is a common practice. Generally surface settlements in a soil of low permeability occur during a tunnel construction but also during a long period after completion of the tunnel. The long-term settlements occur mainly due to consolidation around the tunnel. The consolidation process is caused and determined by the tail void grouting which leads to an excess pore water pressure in the vicinity of the tunnel. Because of this, the grouting pressure has a strong effect on the long-term settlements in the shield tunneling. In order to investigate this effect, a series of coupled hydro-mechanical 3D finite element simulations have been performed. The results show that an increase in grouting pressure reduces the short-term settlements, but in many cases, it doesn't lead to a reduction of the final settlements after the completion of consolidation. Thereby, the existence of a critical grouting pressure is identified, at which the minimal settlements are expected.

  • We have fabricated GaN Schottky barrier diode (SBD) for high-voltage applications on Si substrate. The leakage current and the electrical characteristics of GaN SBD are investigated by annealing metal-semiconductor junctions. Ohmic junctions of Ti/Al/Mo/Au and Schottky junctions of Ni/Au are used in the fabrication. A test structure is proposed to measured buffer leakage current through a mesa structure. When annealing temperature is increased from $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$, measured buffer leakage current is also increased from 87 nA to 780 nA at the width of 100 ${\mu}m$. The diffusion of Au, Ti, Mo, O into GaN buffer layer increases the leakage current and that is verified by Auger electron spectroscopy. Experimental results show that the low leakage current and the high breakdown voltage of GaN SBD are achieved by annealing metal-semiconductor junctions.
