  • Smith predictor can't be applied to the time delay systems that have poles near the origin or a pure integrator or a modeling error, because of occurring the steady state error for the step disturbance. In this paper, a new Smith predictor controller for these systems is designed to eliminate the effects of the disturbance. A disturbance observer to estimate a disturbance is proposed and a new controller is designed using the estimated disturbance. As a result, the new controller can eliminate the effects of the disturbance and modeling error. The simulation results for the steam superheater and the steam pressure systems verify the efficiency of the proposed controller.

  • This study evaluated the effect of combined rainfall observation of using rain gauge and rain radar. The effect of combined observations is to be evaluated by considering the decrease of measurement error due to combined use of design orthogonal observation methods. As an example, this study evaluated the rain gauge network of the Keum river basin, and showed how the density of rain gauges could be decreased by combining the radar observation. This study applied the researches on sampling error by North and Nakamoto(1989), Yoo et al. (1996) and Yoo (1997), also the simple NFD model for representing the rainfall field. The model parameters were decided using the rainfall characteristics (correlation time and length) estimated using the data collected in the Keum River Basin by 28 rain gauges and the operation rule of radar was assumed arbitrarily. This study considered the rain gauge density criteria provided by WMO(1994) and the rain gauge density installed in the Keum river basin to decrease the rain gauge density under the condition of introducing the radar.

  • In the auto-guiding system for obtaining a long exposure astrophotography, CCD camera is usually used for measuring guide errors which are affected by optical dispersion and mechanical disturbances. In this paper, a discrete time dynamic model and a performance index are proposed for analysing the auto-guiding system. The optimal gain for proportional control is derived considering the optical dispersion and the disturbances. Some experiments are provided to illustrate that the optimal control gain is lower as the optical dispersion is higher.

  • In the unification method of classical linear control and variable structure control, a problem that the error between the actual plant output and the nominal plant output exists consistently is solved by replacing the nominal plant with an adaptive observer. Since the exponentially convergent adaptive observer is used, the adaptive observer output converges to the actual plant output rapidly. So, the error does not exist after all and as a result the performance degradation of the control system is prevented.

  • Atmospheric optical thickness during nighttime was estimated in this study using analysis on the images of the moon taken from commercial digital camera. Basically the Langely Regression method was applied to the observations of the moon for the cloudless and optically stable sky conditions. The spectral response functions for the red(R), green(G), and blue(B) channels were employed to derive effective wavelength centers of each channel for the observations of the moon, and the correspondent Rayleigh optical thickness were also calculated. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) was calculated by subtracting Rayleigh optical thickness from the atmospheric optical thickness derived from the Langley regression method. As there are only handful of nighttime AOT observations, the AOT from the moon observations was compared with the AOT from sun-photometers and the MODIS satellite sensor, which was taken several hours before the moon observations of this study. As a result, the values of AOT from moon observations agree with those from sun-photometers and MODIS within 0.1 for the R, G, B channels of the digital camera. On the other hand, ${\AA}$ngstr$\ddot{o}$m Exponent seems to be subject to larger errors due to its sensitiveness to the spectral errors of AOT. Nevertheless, the results of this study indicate that the method reported in this study is promising as it can provide nighttime AOT relatively easily with a low cost instrument like digital camera. More observations and analyses are warranted to attain improved nighttime AOT observations in the future.

  • The Origin-Destination(OD) matrix is very important in describing transport movements in a region. The OD matrix can be estimated using traffic counts on links in the transport network and other available information. This information on the travel is often contained in a target OD matrix and traffic counts in links. To estimate an OD matrix from traffic counts, they are the major input data which obviously affects the accuracy of the OD matrix estimated, Generally, the quality of an estimated OD matrix depends much on the reliability of the input data, and the number and locations of traffic counting points in the network. Any Process regarding the traffic counts such as the amount and their location has to be carefully studied. The objective of this study is to select of the optimal location of traffic counting points for the OD matrix estimation. The model was tested in nationwide network. The network consists of 224 zones, 3,125 nodes and 6,725 links except to inner city road links. The OD matrix applied for selection of traffic counting points was estimated to 3-constrained entropy maximizing model. The results of this study follow that : the selected alternative to the best optimal counting points of six alternatives is the alternative using common links of OD matrix and vehicle-km and traffic density(13.0% of 6,725 links), however the worst alternative is alternative of all available traffic counting points(44.9% of 6,725 links) in the network. Finally, it should be concluded that the accuracy of reproduced OD matrix using traffic counts related much to the number of traffic counting points and locations.

  • Integrating the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) sensor technologies using the precise GPS Carrier phase measurements is a methodology that has been widely applied in those application fields requiring accurate and reliable positioning and attitude determination; ranging from 'kinematic geodesy', to mobile mapping and imaging, to precise navigation. However, such integrated system may not fulfil the demanding performance requirements when the baseline length between reference and mobil user GPS receiver is grater than a few tens of kilometers. This is because their positioning/attitude determination is still very dependent on the errors of the GPS observations, so-called "baseline dependent errors". This limitation can be remedied by the integration of GPS and INS sensors, using multiple reference stations. Hence, in order to derive the GPS distance dependent errors, this research proposes measurement processing algorithms for multiple reference stations, such as a reference station ambiguity resolution procedure using linear combination techniques, a error estimation based on Kalman filter and a error interpolation. In addition, all the algorithms are evaluated by processing real observations and results are summarized in this paper.

  • This paper improves the accuracy of horizontal positioning by means of the analytical Intersection and Resection. For this purpose, by increasing the number of Known points, the magnitude of errors occurred in unknown points is represented by error ellipse, and the variation of error ellipse is examined. Also, by applying weights according to each measured angles and distances, the variation of error ellipse is analysized.
