  • The existing rehabilitation systems were developed to exercise specific joints only. Therefore rehabilitating the various joints of human, various kinds of devices are need. To overcome these defects, this paper proposed the CMRS, an integrated system that performs various rehabilitation exercises. The characteristics of motion and the positions between human body and the system were investigated with the kinematics analysis of upper and lower limb of human body. We presented a proper mechanism to develop a rehabilitation device on the base of the study and studied the relative positions between head part and human joints. Through the simulations, the possibility of rehabilitation system was verified. And the base frame was also developed for convenient and stable position control. Finally, the CMRS was developed as an 8 degree of freedom mechanism. It is expected that the CMRS will be applied to the rehabilitations of various joints.

  • This paper investigates the kinematic and dynamic analysis of a spherical three degree of freedom parallel joint module, which is used in the exercise equipment for balance and leg-strength improvement of aged people. The joint module has three dyads which consist of two links and three revolute joints, and their all joints intersect at the global point located at the module's center. The paper shows the explicit mathematical procedure for deriving the closed form solutions in the inverse and forward position analysis of this parallel joint module. In velocity and acceleration analysis, we derived relations for joint velocities and accelerations of dyads and rotational velocity and acceleration of the top plate. For applying this module to rehabilitation exercise, we determined the dynamic model of the Korean males in their 50s and examined the model's results by dynamic model simulation.

  • This work proposes a new method to generate velocity profile of a traction motor equipped in a rehabilitation system for knee joint patients through humanoid robot simulation. To this end, a three-dimensional full-body humanoid robot model is newly constructed, and natural human gait is simulated by applying to it reference joint angle trajectories already published. Linear velocity is derived from distance data calculated between the positions of a thigh band and its traction motor at every sampling instance, which is a novel idea of this paper. The projection rule is employed to kinematically describe the humanoid robot because of its high efficiency and accuracy, and measured joint trajectories are used in simulating human natural gait referring to Winter's book. The attained motor velocity profile for a certain position in human body will be applied to our walking-assistance system which is implemented with a treadmill system.

  • In this study, an exoskeleton-type robot is developed to assist frozen shoulder rehabilitation in a systematic and efficient manner for humans. The developed robot has two main features. The first is a structural feature: this robot was designed to rehabilitate both shoulders of a patient, and the three axes of the shoulder meet at one point to generate human-like ball joint motions. The second is a functional feature that is divided into two rehabilitation modes: the first mode is a joint rehabilitation mode that helps to recover the shoulder's original range of motion by moving the patient's shoulder according to patterns obtained by motion capture, and the second mode is a muscle rehabilitation mode that strengthens the shoulder muscles by suitably resisting the patient's motion. Through these two modes, frozen shoulder rehabilitation can be performed systematically according to the patient's condition. The development procedure is described in detail.

  • In this study, an advanced knee joint for active prosthesis leg driven by a linear actuator is suggested. The structure of knee joints of existing active prosthesis legs consists of three links. This kind of linkage requires large torque to drive the active prosthesis legs. Thus a new linkage structure is suggested to solve such problem in this paper. Motion characteristics of the suggested linkage are examined in the simulation. The motion simulation results show that the proposed linkage is able to imitate human gait cycles with the half of linear actuator speed in existing linkages.

  • Recent experimental observations support the hypothesis that mechanical stimuli play a role in regulating the specialized molecular expression of articular cartilage in vitro and in vivo. Other studies have demonstrated that the continuous passive motion(CPM)bioreactor for whole joints can provide a platform for possible future in vitro studies and applications, including possible interactions of bio-mechanical and biochemical signals. In this study, we have developed acustom-made bioreactor capable of bending and stretching with circular type motion, and a biomimetic knee joint model, using a 3D printer. This system could be used to investigate the effects of rehabilitative joint motion of dynamic culture.

  • IIn this paper, active trasfemoral prosthesis leg is designed for the handicapped who lost their legs upon knee. It is important to design proper knee joint to mimic walking motion of hyman. 1 degree-of-freedom active trasfemoral prosthesis leg is designed with knee joint. Operating angle and torque have been calculated using kinematics of three linkages in prosthesis leg. Finite element analysis of major components is performed to evaluate the safety under operating condition and to reduce weights. Minimum volumes of components are obtained by optimization as satisfying safety requirements. The results show that about 35% of weight of components is reduced.

  • We developed bone-insertion pin screw that can be used for purposed treatment by combining with the external fixator which is the subsidiary tool for the healing of the fracture (open fracture of long bone, reconstruction of soft tissue and arthrodesis etc.) Furthermore, for the frist time, we succeeded in domestic-producing this screw, using specially-designed treating tool stuck on the lathe machine and abrasive blasting machine, and the post-dealing technique and process. In comparison with other foreign products, we could get more desirable results in various tests. This pin screw has 103% characteristics of the average of foreign products. Thus we'd like to introduce design techniques, post-dealing process and result of function tests.

  • The mechanical system of wearable walking assist robot needs to be optimized for adapting with human body structure and the planned control algorithm should have a secure procedure when a incongruity situation which can cause musculoskeletal injury occurs because a wearable robot is attached to a body. The understanding of walking or musculoskeletal motions characteristics must be preceeded and analyzed for developing novel wearable walking assist robot. In this study we tried to find out the capacities of powers and torques of joint actuators to design optimized performances of system and to obtain the analysis data to figure out the characteristics of joint movements during some types of walk. The major types of walk and motion are stair climbing and descending, sit-to-stand motion, and slope walking. In this study all these motions were analyzed experimentally except slope walking.
