  • This study aims to numerically investigate ground movement around a square steel pipe as well as a group of square steel pipes induced by its and their ground penetration for trenchless construction of a concrete box. From numerical results, ground movement induced by a square steel pipe is much more dominantly governed by vertical displacement rather than horizontal displacement. Ground settlement induced by pipe penetration is much larger as the overburden becomes lower. The settlement is also shown to be slightly dependent upon the sequence of pipe penetration. More careful construction management is highly in demand during the penetration of upper pipes since their induced settlement occupies approximately 75 percent of total ground settlement after the whole construction of steel pipes.

  • It is not easy to understand exact soil properties, because soil is nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. There are raany inefficient cases in aspect of time and economy in site survey. So this study tried to analyze the correlation of cone resistance and seismic velocity in order to present an efficient method in ground investigation. A cone penetrometer is frequently used to investigate soil properties, which are especially fit to investigate coastal soft ground. A portable cone penetrometer was used in this research. A portable cone penetrometer has an advantage in investigating the state of soil swiftly and is convenient to manipulate. Also, seismic prospecting is one of the most PoPular methods among geophysical prospecting methods in the estimation of ground properties and its usage is continuously increasing in the survey of soft ground Cone resistance makes a regular group according to stratum in each depth. The results of seismic prospecting show a tendency to have a certain coherence according to the boundary of straturft Therefore, cone resistance and seisrnic prospecting have considerable relations that rnay irnprnve the efficiency of ground investigation.

  • The plutonic rocks in Seonsan area are divided into dioritic-syenitic rock, gneissose granite, biotite granite and fine grained biotite granite. These rocks intruded into the Pre-cambrian metamorphic complex and are all covered by the Cretaceous Nakdong formation. According to modal minerals, dioritic-syenitic rock corresponds to quartz monzonite, granodiorite, tonalite fields, whereas all the other plutonic rocks fall in granite field. Petrochemically the dioritic-syenitic rock is lower in SiO$_2$ content, differentiation index and Larsen index than all the other plutonic rocks. About the zircon morphology, dioritic-syenitic rock shows (100) dominant type but other granitic rocks exhibit mixed types between (100) and (110) type. The dioritic-syenitic rock could be crystallized in higher temperature than the other plutonic rocks. The plutonic rocks correspond to calc-alkaline rock series, and belong to I-type granite and mostly magnetite-series in magmatic origin. In plutonic processes, the dioritic-syenitic rock with 5kb vapor pressure could intrude into the metamorphic batement at 17km deep below the surface. Later the gneissose granite with lower 3kb vapor pressure could intrude at 10km deep. Sequentially the biotite granite with 0.7kb could intrude at 2km deep. Finally the fine grained biotite granite with 3kb vapor pressure could intrude at 10km deep.

  • The granites in the Jeomchon area can be divided into hornblende biotite granite (Hbgr), deformed biotite granite (Dbgr), deformed pinkish biotite granite(Dpbgr), biotite granite (Btgr), and granite porphyry(Gp). These granites show metaluminous, 1-type and calc-alkaine characteristics from their whole-rock chemistry. Hbgr and Dbgr belong to ilmenite-series granitoids, but Gp to magnetite-series. Dpbgr and Btgr show the intermediate nature between ilmenite- and magnetite-series. Tectonic discriminations indicate that Hbgr and Dbgr were formed in active continental margin environment, whereas Dpbgr, Btgr, and Gp in post-orogenic and/or anorogenic rift-related environment. From the Harker diagrams major oxide contents of Hbgr and Dbgr show a continuous variation with $SiO_2$, indicating that they are genetically correlated with each other. On the other hand, any correlation of major oxides variation cannot be recognized among Dpbgr, Btgr and Gp. It seems like that Hbgr and Dbgr were derived from a same parent granitic magma, judging from their occurrence of outcrop, mineral composition as well as whole-rock chemistry. Variation trends of major oxide contents between Hbgr and Baegnok granodiorite are very similar and continuous. If the two granites were derived from a cogenetic magma, there exists a possibility that the granitic bodies had been separated by Btgr and Gp of Cretaceous age. Three stages of the granitic intrusions are understood in the Jeomchon area. After the intrusion of Hbgr and Dbgr during middle to late Paleozoic time, Dpbgr emplaced into the area next, and finally Btgr and Gp intruded during Cretaceous time. Tectonic movement accompanying shear and/or thrust deformation seems likely to have occurred bewteen the intrusions of Dpbgr and Btgr.

  • Soil tests are generally conducted using a membrane to measure a pore water pressure. However, it has also been recognized that the membrane penetrates into the specimen by the change of the confining pressure, and it results in the erroneous measurement in the pore water pressure and the volumetric strain. This study examined the effectiveness of the correction equation of the membrane penetration on the basis of the experimental data acquired during the isotropic unloading and the cyclic shear process using the hollow cylindrical shear test equipment. The results showed that the membrane penetration by the correction equation could be overestimated when the mean effective stress was lower than 20kPa in this study. The limitations originated from the sudden increase near the zero effective stress, and in order to prevent the overestimation in low effective stress condition, the use of the constant a was proposed in this study. Furthermore, the correction equation for the membrane penetration had to be applied carefully when the initial relative density was high and the density changes were occurred by the relocation of the soil particle by the liquefaction.

  • Unconfined compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate curing characteristics of controlled low strength material(CLSM) made with coal ashes. It is found that unconfined compressive strength normalized by curing times, increases as decreasing the water contents of CLSM particularly during first three days. Dynamic cone penetrometer tests were also carried out to evaluate cost-effective CLSM lump strength characteristics with time. It takes around 10 days to reach target strength, 500kPa (penetration rate, 20mm/blow). Curing rate significantly decreases after 10 days elapsed regardless of CLSM formulation.

  • To analysis the effect of reinforcement ratio and impact velocity on local damage, a series of impact analyses are performed to predict local effects. According to these results, the reinforcement ratio has no effect on the penetration depth and perforation thickness, but notable change to the scabbing area were observed. The higher the missile velocity becomes, the greater the degree of local damage to the reinforced concrete slabs is. Analysis results will be useful in the impact-resistance design of containment buildings and structures.

  • The uncertainties encountered in the stability analysis for the foundation of offshore structures on clay are formulated in probabilistic terms and used to evaluate the reliability of the foundation design. The major sources of uncertainty are: soil properties, f.ave loads, and methods of analysis. The major part of the uncertainty in safety factor is contributed by the uncertainty in the undrained shear strength. All sources of uncertainties that affect the shear strength of clay are modeled and systematically analyzed. The in situ undrained shear strengths are evaluated by laboratory tests and cone penetration tests. The undrained shear strengths from the laboratory test and CPT, respectively at Statfjord B site in the North Sea, are used as an example in risk analysis. Using the CPT alone, the failure probability on sliding of gravity platform at Statfjord B is much larger than the failure probability using the laboratory undrained shear strengths. The major uncertainty of using the CPT as the estimate of th2 undrained shear strength of clay results from the correlation between the cone resistance and the undrained shear strength.

  • In this study, a classification and uniaxial compression test of soil was conducted on 15 collapsed sites to use ground improvement with excellent protection effect owing to the increase of localized heavy rain in Korea. The Casagrande method and fall cone test were performed on the field soil to derive an expression for comparing liquid limit and plastic limit values, soil classification, and correlation between each other. By deriving the optimal mixing ratio of the ground improvement agent using uniaxial compressive strength for each soil classification, the classification of the fine-grained soil was not clear owing to the proficiency difference and test error. However, after classifying using the fall cone test, it was possible to suggest a clear optimal mixing ratio.
