Transportation Impacts on the Spatial Characteristics of Gateway Cities in the Geum River Basin, Korea: A Case of the Gunsan and the Gangyeong (금강유역 관문도시의 교통 변천에 따른 공간적 특성 변화 : 군산과 강경을 대상으로)

  • The internal structure of gateway city is to be influenced by the external relations. The purpose of this study is to examine the transportation impacts on the spatial characteristics of gateway cities in the Geum River basin, Korea. The changes of the transportation is classified by the commodity, the rice flow, and the functions of the gateway are examined in Gunsan-Si and Ganggyeong-Eup. Major findings of the study are as follows. First, the water and land transports in the gateways are connected or not. In the flow of the rice, the Gunsan gateway is connected, while the Ganggyeong is not. The difference is reflected in the location of the port and railway station. In the flow of marine products and salt, the Ganggyeong gateway is connected, while the Gunsan is not. Second, there had been separated or not in the location of the ports of the marine products and the rice. They are separated in the Gunsan, while not separated in the Ganggyeong. The results imply that there are to be difference between the two ports after the gateway of rice.

  • Recently, the importance of competitive cities has emerged, and many cities around the world are striving to gain competitiveness. Domestic cities are also enhancing their competitiveness by taking advantage of the city's uniqueness and locality with strategies differentiated from other cities, and interest in city brands is increasing. This study seeks to enhance the city brand by improving the landscape elements of the airport, a representative international entrance. Through Instagram's hashtag function, it aims to derive elements of landscape preferred by airport users and to find ways to enhance Busan's city brand based on them.

A Comparative Study of the Local Identity among Inchon Citizens (인천시민의 특성별 지역정체성 비교)

  • 이 연구는 인천의 정체성을 알아보는 데 연구의 초점을 맞추었다. 연구방법으로는 실증적 방법과 민속학적 방법 두 가지를 병행하였다. 시민단체, 공무원, 학생을 대상으로 임의목적표본방법을 사용하여 총 613명이 분석되었다. 분석방법은 교차통계분석 및 다중분류분석을 하였다. 정체성은 한 지역에 거주하는 주민들의 집단결속력과 성취도를 결정하여 주며, 그 지역의 사회적 통합과도 밀접한 관련을 지니고 있어서, 지역의 문제나 관심사를 해결하고 발전시키는데 가장 핵심적인 요소이다. 인천의 정체의식은 세 집단 모두 낮으며, 전체응답자의 절반 이상은 그저 그렇다는 중용의 의견이었다. 인천에 대한 정체의식을 응답집단의 특성별로 보면 여자보다는 남자가 높고, 기혼자보다는 미혼자가 높으며, 30세 이상으로 연령이 많을수록, 수입과 생활수준이 낮을수록 정체의식이 상대적으로 높게 나타났다. 그리고 전문.관리.사무직보다는 판매.서비스.생산.농업직 종사자들의 정체의식이 높았다. 전문대 정도의 교육을 받은 시민의 정체의식이 상대적으로 높고, 인천의 문화.복지.환경개선을 위한 특별기금 기부의사가 있는 시민과 인천을 마음붙이고 살 곳으로 생각하는 시민의 정체의식이 높다. 총괄적인 의미에서 본 인천의 정체성에 관한 조사를 보면, 인천은 "주인의식 없음"과 "이제부터 만들어 가야 한다"는 답변이 제일 많았고 그 다음은 "포용력", "선구적 개척정신", "긍정적인 의미의 짠물", "합중시(合衆市)적 다양성", "외세에 대한 호국정신", "세계의 관문도시"로 나타났다. 이와 같은 응답유형으로 보아서는 인천지역에 대한 이미지를 한마디로 딱 잘라 말하기는 어렵다. 그러나 인천은 서울.경기인, 충청인, 호남인, 영남인, 이북인, 외국인 등을 가리지 않고 받아드리는 "포용력이 있는 합중시적 다양성을 가진 도시"로 지역차가 서로 다른 출신성분이 공존할 수 있다는 점에서 의미하는 바가 크다. 이는 "세계속의 도시"와 "동북아의 거점도시"를 추구하는 미래지향적인 시각에서는 지역주의를 지양하고 지역통합이슈와 세계화 물결속에서 외국인에게도 열린 상태문화를 제공하는 관문이 될 것이라는 면에서 인천이 추구해야 할 정체성으로 시사하는 점이라고 본다.는 미래지향적인 시각에서는 지역주의를 지양하고 지역통합이슈와 세계화 물결속에서 외국인에게도 열린 상태문화를 제공하는 관문이 될 것이라는 면에서 인천이 추구해야 할 정체성으로 시사하는 점이라고 본다.

  • This study focused on the anding of Inchon's identity The empirical method and ethnomethodological approaches were used to collect the data. Among members ofcitizen movement groups,government workers,and students who are living inInchon were selected as 613 samples using a purposive sampling method. MultipleClassification Analysis (MCA) and cross-tabulation methods were used in theanalysisThe study of identity in an area is important in terms of providing the solution ofthe problem in a region and social integration of the citizens. The scores of the indexabout Inchon's identity are quite low and more than half of the respondents to allthree groups showed the middle position of the scores from the identity index. By thecharacteristics of the respondents,female,unmarried single,30 years or more,lowerincome groups showed relatively higher identity index scores than other counter-parts . And professional,administrative,clerical workers'identity index scores werehigher than people who work at sales,service,and agricultural sectors. Respondentswith 2 years of college or more,with intentions to donate special monies for cultural, social welfare, environmental reform,persons who want to live in Inchon for along period of time equipped with a stronger identity index.For the character of Inchon's identity,there are no identity,making it fromnow on,capacity or broad-minded city,vanguard pioneer,displeased, Oiversity/multiplicity of the city,defense spirit from foreign invasion,entrancecity from the world in that order. Therefore,it is hard to say what exactly Inchon'simage is in a single word. However,Inchon can be characterized as a diverse citywith capacity to live together without any serious conflicts among citizens who come from Seoul,Kyunggi-Do,Chungchung-Do,Chunla-Do,Kyungsang-Do,and foreign countries including North Korea.   • As a port city, Qingdao had been developed through the 4 stages during the first half of the 20th century. First stage is German Occupation period. In this period, the old downtown of Qingdao was formed and the existing architectural characteristics of Qingdao had been established. Second stage is the First Japanese Occupation period. Japanese transformed Qingdao into Japanese city and expanded city area to north and east. Third stage is Northern Warlords and the National Government period. In this period, Qingdao had been developed as an international city of world trade and vacation. Forth stage is the Second Japanese Occupation period. Japanese tried to change Qingdao as a military base for the invasion of the northern China.

Planning the Redesign of Inner Harbor by Comparative Analysis and Typological Approach (내항 입지의 비교분석과 유형화를 통한 재개발 방향 모색)

  • Due to changes in the distribution industry, inner harbors have been on a sharp decline in the recent past. However, through the application of the right development plans, such harbors can be revitalized into vibrant urban areas again. The importance of inner harbors has been recognized by the relevant authorities in Korea which are now pushing forward with redevelopment plans for its inner harbors. This study proposes a new approach to redevelopment plans based on the recognition that inner harbors have unique characteristics involving both inland areas and the ocean. In the study, representative inner harbors were selected and analyzed comparatively according to two distinct concepts of location: the Gateway Concept and the Central Place Concept. Based on these concepts, the conditions of the inner harbors were examined. Their location can be typed, and development directions were proposed according to their types and conditions. However, difficult points such as isolation and separation between an urban district and the harbor area, can be obstructions to their potential revival. An inner harbor needs to be considered as an intermediary, connecting place between the ocean and the city, not as another ordinary development area. In addition, a redevelopment plan should be accompanied by a strategic viewpoint to make the most of this feature.

  • Cities are the most important type of tourist destination across the world, and yet urban areas have neglected in most academic studies of tourism. Urban destinations serve as gateways for tourist entry to the country, as centers of accommodation and a base for excursion to rural areas as well as destinations in their own right. Increasingly cities rely on image promotion to attract tourists to cities. A city's image is the sum of beliefs, ideas, and impressions that a people have of a city. Image has always been of great interest and concern to city marketers. The image improvement is very important especially in urban tourism development because tourism overwhelmingly depends on image. The cost and effectiveness of the image improvement strategy depends on the city's current image and real attributes. Some cities are blessed with positive images. They don't require changing the image so much as amplifying it and delivering it to more target groups. Many cities are stuck with a negative image. They need to remove it and make a positive out of a negative to correct it. Image reversals, however, are difficult to accomplish. Some cities are not well known because they are small, lack attractions, or don't advertise. They need to identify, develop, and disseminate a strong positive image for the city.

  • Kimpo international airport logistics complex had been the most busiest airfreight gateway in Korea during last century but, after the grand open of Incheon international airport in 2001, it had lost its major role as a national airfreight hub facilities. However, owing to its locational advantages in Seoul metropolitan area. Kimpo airport logistics park still acts like an urban logistics distribution center in these days. Caused by the KAC's profit oriented policies, the Kimpo airport logistics park's public function as an urban distribution center might be curtailed in the future. Therefore, several laws and ordinances related to national and regional logistics strategies should be modified to prevent it.
