An Analysis of Middle School Science Teachers' Orientations toward Teaching Science (OTS) and Factors affecting OTS (중학교 과학교사의 교수지향과 이에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine 'orientations toward teaching science (OTS)' of science teachers and to analyze the factors affecting OTS found in middle school science classes. For this purpose, we selected three female teachers as participants named Kim, Ryu, and Park who had various teaching experiences. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were gathered for data. After analysis of the characteristics of the teachers' orientations toward teaching science from the data, the factors affecting the orientation were investigated. As results, three types of orientation toward science teaching were observed: inquiry, activity driven, and didactic. These types of orientation toward science teaching were affected by internal factors rather than external factors. The internal factors found out were experience as a student, understanding of the nature of science, curiosity, and reflective thinking.

The Differences of Graph Construction of Middle School Students on Daily-life and Scientific Contexts by the Views on the Nature of Scientific Measurement (중학생의 측정의 본성에 대한 견해에 따른 일상 및 과학적 맥락에서의 그래프 구성의 차이)

  • In this study, we investigated the differences of graph constructed by middle school students in daily-life and scientific contexts according to the views on the nature of scientific measurement. A test consisting of three similar data sets regarding daily-life and scientific contexts was developed, and administered to 151 ninth graders. They were expected to construct proportional, inverse-proportional, and increasing and become constant form of graphs for each data set. Graphs constructed were analyzed in the aspects of constructing a trend line (types of a trend line, interpolation/extrapolation), selecting axes variables, scaling axes, and plotting points. Analyses of the results revealed that the students with set paradigm tended to construct a curved trend line, while those with point paradigm constructed a broken trend line in inverse-proportional graph questions. In the aspects of interpolation/extrapolation, most students with set paradigm performed both interpolation and extrapolation better than those with point paradigm in scientific context. Most students with set paradigm performed both interpolation and extrapolation regardless of contexts, while the proportion of interpolation of those with point paradigm was higher in scientific context than in daily-life context. In selecting axes variables, scaling axes, and plotting dots, there were no statistically significant differences between set and point paradigms. On the bases of the results, educational implications for improving graph construction skills of middle school students are discussed.

A Study of Pre-service Chemistry Teachers' Perceptions on NOS -Focusing on Boyle's Air Pump Experiment- (예비화학교사들의 과학의 본성에 대한 인식 연구 -보일의 공기 펌프 실험을 중심으로-)

  • In this study, we developed education materials using history of science related to the experiment of 'Boyle's air pump' and the Boyle and Hobbs' debate of vacuum to find out the perceptions of NOS by pre-service chemistry teachers. For the study, 29 pre-service chemistry teachers at a college of education in Chungcheongbuk-do were selected. As RFN items that were related to the contextual situation developed in this study, items in the categories of 'Aims and Values', 'Scientific practices', 'Scientific Methods among Educational Applications' and 'Social-Institutional Aspects among Educational Applications' were selected. Through the items of RFN, the perceptions of pre-service teachers in non-contextual situations were investigated. Then we presented the pre-service teachers with the situation related to Boyle's experiment on air pump and Boyle and Hobbes' debate over vacuum. In addition, their perception of NOS was examined in contextual situations related to RFN items. Responses to the items, experimental results related to Boyle's Law, group discussion, and interview data were collected as data. As a result of the study, it was found that pre-service teachers had informed perceptions in most of the items, but cases with naive views or mixed views were found in context experimental situations. This study can contribute to the NOS education for pre-service chemistry teachers by development of context situation education materials related to NOS and by finding out their perceptions in the non-contextual and contextual situation.

  • 근대과학을 낳는데 가장 중요한 역할을 한 갈릴레오는 우연히 망원경을 만든 것을 계기로 천문학에 끼여들었다. 망원경에 의한 천체관측은 2천년동안 끄떡없던 아리스토텔레스티 우주론이 틀렸음을 보여 주었다. 1609년 달의 정체가 밝혀지고 본성의 위성들이 발견되자 대중의 열광은 극에 이르렀으며 갈릴레오는 일약 유명해졌다. 가톨릭교회는 갈릴레오의 발견을 크게 환영했다. 그는 로마에 불려가 교황 바오르 5세(Paul V $1552\~1621$의 환대를 받고 성대한 축하행사에 참석했다. 예수회소속천문학자들도 갈릴레오를 찬양했다. 유일한 반대세력은 대학에 자리잡고 있느 소수의 아리스토펠레스주의자들이었다. 갈릴레오가 옹호한 코페르니쿠스체계에 대한 최초의 공격은 평신도와 하급성직자들에게서 나왔다.

Development and Feasibility Study of the Nature of Science Instrument for Elementary School Students (초등학생용 과학의 본성 검사 도구 개발 및 타당성 검토)

  • In this study, the Nature of Science (NOS) instrument for elementary school students in the form of open questionnaires was developed specifically to reveal elementary school students' perceptions of the NOS, and its validity and effectiveness were investigated. To develop a NOS instrument for elementary school students, problems that may occur when applying the existing NOS instruments to elementary school students were analyzed and based on this, the development direction of the NOS instrument was established. In addition, after selecting seven NOS types suitable for the level of elementary school students, the preliminary instrument was produced by modifying and supplementing the items in the existing instruments for each type or by developing new items. Finally, the NOS instrument consisting of eight questions was developed by adding one question asking for a comprehensive understanding of science to seven questions related to each type of NOS after a content validity test of the science education expert group. To verify the practical effect of the developed instrument, pre- and post-tests were conducted on 50 students in two classes of sixth grade at two elementary schools in Seoul: 'existing instrument → development instrument' in one class, and 'development instrument → existing instrument' in the other class. The collected data were then compared and evaluated through summary content analysis and analyzed by executing the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. As a result of comparing and analyzing students' responses to the existing NOS instrument and the developed NOS instrument, students' perspectives on the NOS were more diverse when using the developed instrument, and the level of error in the response caused by misinterpreting the intention of the question was reduced. In addition, when using the developed instrument, the responses of the majority of students at a statistically significant level changed more specifically. In this study, the implications for the development of NOS instruments suitable for elementary school students were discussed based on these results.

모델 구성을 통한 지구과학 교수-학습 활동의 제안

  • 본 논문에서는 모델 구성을 통한 교수-학습 활동을 지구과학 수업을 위한 유용한 방법의 하나로 제안하였다. 모델 구성은 지구과학자들이 직접적으로 경험하기 어려운 지구과학적 현상이나 과정을 연구하기 위하여 동원하는 방법으로서, 지구과학의 본질적 속성을 반영한 수업을 개발하는 데 이용할 수 있다. 모델 구성을 통한 지구과학 수업은 학생들이 지구과학적인 현상이나 과정에 대한 모델을 창안하고 학생들이 서로 모델에 대한 의견을 교환하며 지속적으로 모델을 수정해 나가는 순환적인 과정(creation-communication-change cycle)으로 진행될 수 있으며, 학습자들의 사고 과정을 촉진시켜 여러 가지 학습 효과를 가져올 수 있다. 따라서, 지구과학 교육 현장에서 학생들이 능동적으로 참여하는 지구과학 수업을 위하여 모델 구성을 통한 교수-학습 활동이 적극적으로 실천되고 그 효과를 자세히 검토하는 일이 필요하다.

Analysis of the Manners of Using Scientific Models in Secondary Earth Science Classrooms: With a Focus on Lessons in the Domains of Atmospheric and Oceanic Earth Sciences (중등학교 지구과학 수업에서 과학적 모델의 활용 양상 분석: 대기 및 해양 지구과학 관련 수업을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the manners in which models are used in secondary science classrooms. A total of thirteen video-recordings of science lessons dealing with the domains of atmospheric and oceanic earth sciences and their verbatim transcripts were analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Interviews with three inservice science teachers were also conducted. Six interrelated assertions were generated as the result of the study: 1) The most frequently used models in secondary earth science classrooms include two-dimensional pictorial, symbolic, iconic, and diagrammatic ones; 2) Science teachers employ models as a mode of representation to make the subject matter available to students; 3) In earth science classrooms, teachers use typical forms of models in intensive manners; 4) Students themselves deal with models on a few occasions, but they just follow similar procedures with the same models; 5) Teachers talk rarely about the nature of scientific models and provide few opportunities for students to think about it; and, 6) Teachers in practice think that the value of using models should be appraised in consideration of the pedagogical intentions of the teacher. Implications for science education and science education research were discussed.

Evaluation of Stated Models for the Floating and Sinking Phenomena in the Chemical Domain (화학영역에서 뜨고 가라앉는 현상에 대해 진술된 모델의 평가)

  • In this study, the models described in the textbooks related to floating and sinking phenomena in the chemical domain were evaluated based on the aspect of nature related to the generation of models. To achieve this, we were targeting statement of textbooks from 7th curriculum to 2009 revised curriculum. Analysis of textbooks was performed for science of elementary school (total 2 textbooks) and science of middle school (total 21 textbooks) which dealt with these phenomena. According to the textbooks analysis, characteristics of statement way were (1) No description of the model's prerequisites, (2) Statement based matter viewpoint, (3) Lack of pattern principle, (4) Inadequacy of the case covered. Although the education about the model for the students should be preceded by the education related to the process of model creation rather than the activity using the model, the education about the nature of the model is insufficient. In order to solve this problem, we propose the model statement in textbooks and the development of the model evaluation tool related to model creation.

Analysis of the recommended science books' suitability for elementary school students (초등학생 과학 추천도서의 적합성 분석)

  • In this study, science recommended books for elementary school students were analyzed. For the study, the screening tool with a number of criteria was produced. In order to develope a screening tool, we examined several previous studies and references. After that, through discussion and exchange of opinions, the preliminary screening tool was made. In order to ensure the reliability and validity, the pilot test was conducted. Then, detailing questions and modifications have been made by exchange of ideas. And nine science recommended books were analyzed. The results are as follows. First, as a result of examining recommended books, exploration and the nature of science were received a low rating. Second, description of the scientific knowledge was not sufficient. This discussion can be obtained through the following. First, when selecting recommended books, care should be taken in exploration and the nature of science. Second, a wide range of science trade books needs to study more.
