Analysis of STEAM Elements of Creative and Convergent Activities Presented in Elementary School Science Authorized Textbooks(II) : Focusing on the 5th and 6th Grade Group (초등학교 과학과 검정 교과용 도서에 제시된 창의·융합 활동의 STEAM 요소 분석(II): 5~6학년군을 중심으로)

  • In this study, the STEAM elements and convergence types which appeared in the creative and convergent activities in authorized elementary school science textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were analyzed. For this study, creative and convergence activities presented in 9 different science textbooks for 5th and 6th graders were selected and the STEAM elements and convergence types were analyzed by each publisher, grade-semester, and science field. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was a large variation by publisher in the total frequency of STEAM elements and the frequency of each element in creative and convergence activities. Second, the ratio of convergence type consisting of two elements was very high, and the higher the number of fused elements, the lower the ratio appeared in overall. Third, the art (A) element had the highest frequency in all grade-semesters, and the technology (T), engineering (E), mathematics (M) elements differed in the distribution of frequency by grade-semesters. Fourth, the engineering (E) element in the 'integration' field, and the art (A) element in the fields of 'movement and energy', 'material', 'earth and universe', and 'life' had the highest frequency.

Analysis of Scientific Models in the Earth Domain of the 10th Grade Science Textbooks (10학년 과학 교과서 지구 분야에 등장하는 과학적 모델 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to identity scientific models included in the Earth domain of the $10^{th}$ grade science textbooks. Three earth science-related chapters in each of 11 trade books were analyzed. A framework was developed and used to classify a scientific model from three different perspectives: medium of representation, method of representation, and mobility of a model. Results showed that the science textbooks utilized domain-specific models in which the nature of sub-areas of earth science was embedded. That is, the unit of 'Change of the Earth' included many iconic models that represented the inaccessible inner structure of the earth and the movement of the tectonic plates. These were also two-dimensional pictorial and static models. In the chapter of 'Atmosphere and Oceans', symbolic and diagrammatic models were dominant in use, which included weather maps and contour line graphs of sea surface temperature and salinity. The unit of 'Solar System and Galaxies' showed the highly frequent use of iconic and analogical models for the large-scale celestial objects and their movements. Implications for earth science education and relevant research were discussed.

The Effect of STEM Integration Education Using Educational Robot on Academic Achievement and Subject Attitude (교육용 로봇을 활용한 STEM 통합교육이 학업성취, 교과태도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of the research is examine the effect of STEM integration education using educatinal robot on academic achievement and subject Attitude of mathematics and science. The participants were 73 students of two classes, sampled from 6th graders of an elementary school. They were divided into a control group who learned a traditional mathematics and sciences education based textbooks and an experimental group who learned STEM integration education using educational robot during 12 sessions. The results are summarized as follows : First, there is a significant difference in academic achievement between two groups. STEM integration education using educational robot based group accomplished higher achievement than textbook based instruction group. Especially, post test analyzes results on the three factors of academic achievement, knowledge, understanding and adaptation, indicate statistically meaningful difference between two groups in understanding and adaptation area except knowledge area. Second, it shows that it greatly affected a positive influence on experimental group's attitude toward subjects in affective area. So we can expect STEM integration education using educational robot to be an alternative for stimulating children's higher learning interest on mathematics and science subject.

An Analysis of 2009 Revised Elementary First Grade Mathematics Textbooks Based on STEAM-related Subject Contents (2009 개정 초등수학 1학년 교과서상의 STEAM 관련교과 내용 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed what STEAM-related subject contents, except mathematical knowledge, are contained in 2009 revised elementary first grade mathematics textbooks. STEAM-related subject contents in the textbooks were examined by unit and by strand of the content in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. According to the results, the number and the type of STEAM-related subject contents are different depending on the unit and the strand of the mathematics content. Generally speaking, in each unit and in each strand of mathematics, storytelling liberal arts-related contents are seen the most, followed by non-storytelling liberal arts-related contents and physical education contents in order, while the number of musical contents was very small. So we need to develop different STEAM materials in order to activate STEAM education in our elementary math classrooms.

  • Recently, there have been many changes in researches of mathematics education. There is a growing number of researchers who are interested in empirical researches. According to the these changes, there is also an emphasis on methodology of mathematics education. This means that many researchers try to conduct an research using scientific approach. Therefore, new types of research developing mathematics courses recently has evolved as follows: teaching experiment, hypothetical loaming trajectory, design science, developmental research. The aim of this study is to reflect on developmental research in RME and to induce desirable directions for developing our mathematics courses. In order to attain these purposes, the present paper reflects the philosophy of RME, aim, procedure, data collection, data analysis, and justification of developmental research with illustrating a exemplar Based on these reflections, it is discussed that it needs to construct the mathematics curriculum connecting theory and practice in mathematics education, to report the process of developing mathematics courses faithfully, and to develop real mathematics courses after conducting basic developmental researches in order to take scientific app- roaches for developing mathematics courses.

Comparison of Textbook Objectives and Paper Test Items Based on Physics I 'Space-Time and the Universe' (고등학교 물리 I '시공간과 우주' 단원의 지필평가 문항과 교과서 목표와의 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the paper test items of high school physics I 'Space-Time and the Universe' unit and how similar the textbook goals are to the cognitive and content areas. This study analyzed paper test items used from nine high schools and KICE about the unit. In order to analyze the distribution of items, they were classified by contents and by cognitive level which is knowledge, comprehension and application levels. As conclusion, application level items were a few, and unbalanced contents distribution appeared in school items. In comparison through the ratio difference index, the objectives of the textbook and the school items were very similar, but the similarities were low when comparing the school items with the KICE items. Based on the above, we suggested some ways to increase the validity of test items.

Revisiting the Definitions and the Textbook Descriptions of Dissolution, Diffusion and Effusion (용해, 확산, 분출의 정의와 교과서 서술에 대한 재고찰)

  • Previous studies showed that many secondary school students and teachers have difficulties in distinguishing the phenomena of dissolution and diffusion, as well as the phenomena of diffusion and effusion. In this study, currently accepted term definitions of dissolution, diffusion and effusion were searched from the IUPAC Gold Book and the physical chemistry textbooks, and the points to differentiate the definitions were sought. Also, the term definitions of these three phenomena in the secondary school text books and the college general chemistry textbooks were surveyed and compared to the currently accepted definitions. It was found that dissolution is formation of one new phase from mixing two phases, while diffusion is the migration of matter down from the concentration gradient. The "concentration gradient" is considered to be a key point to distinguish diffusion from the dissolution. However, the concentration gradient was not mentioned in the definitions of diffusion in most of the secondary school textbooks and the college general chemistry textbooks. Effusion is differentiated from diffusion by the gas molecules escaping from the container through a tiny hole without collision. The definition of effusion was not found in most of the secondary school textbooks.

Problem Analysis and Recommendations of CPU Contents in Korean Middle School Informatics Textbooks (중학교 정보 교과서에 제시된 중앙처리장치 내용 문제점 분석 및 개선 방안)

  • The School Curriculum amend in 2007 mandates the contents from which students can learn the principles and concepts of computer science. Computer Science is one of the most rapidly changing subjects, and the Informatics textbook should accurately explain the basic principles and concepts based on the latest technology. However, we found that the middle school textbooks in circulation lack accuracy and consistency in describing CPU. This paper attempted to discover the root-cause of the fallacy and suggest timely and appropriate explanation based on the historical and technical analysis. According to our study, it is appropriate to state that CPU is composed of datapath and control unit. The Datapath performs operations on data and holds data temporarily, and it is composed of the hardware components such as memory, register, ALU and adder. The Control unit decides the operation types of datapath elements, main memory and I/O devices. Nevertheless, considering the technological literacy of middle school students, we suggest the terms, 'arithmetic part' and 'control part' instead of datapath and control unit.

  • Material Testing Method subject of Metal Materials, which is one of curriculum of engineering major high school, is not properly updated even though both science and technology are advancing rapidly. Especially, the need of fractographic technique, which can analyze the fracture surface with the advanced testing equipment and technique, is increasing. The importance and the analyzing method of Fractography are proved by the characteristic analysis of pressure tube fracture surface of HWPR. In the future, in order to increase the professional knowledge and their pride of engineering major high school student, these advanced subject should be included in the new crriculum of engineering major high school. This activity to involve the advanced subject should be carried out voluntary by the first line teacher before the responsible body.

수학(數學)의 고찰(考察)과 수학교육(數學敎育)의 개선방향(改善方向)

  • 최근 과학기술(科學技術)의 영향을 받아 급변하는 국내외의 환경을 감안할 때, 과학교육(科學敎育)의 중요성은 심각히 인식되고 있으며 특히 수학교육(數學敎育)은 그 비중이 크다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 수학교과과정(數學敎科課程)의 편성(編成)은 매우 중요한 위치에 있으며 현재 문교부(文敎部)에서도 중(中) 고등학교(高等學校)의 수학교과서(數學敎科書)를 새로이 개편하는 작업을 진행하고 있다. 이러한 국가적으로 중요한 작업이 체계적(體系的)인 연구(硏究)와 제도적(制度的)인 개선(改善)을 바탕으로 이루어져야 한다는 생각 아래에서, 각급학교(各級學校)의 교과과정(敎科課程), 행정(行政) 및 제도(制度), 교과서(敎科書) 집필(執筆) 및 지도평가방법(指導評價方法)에서 나타나는 문제점(問題點)을 파악하고 개선방향(改善方向)을 모색하는 데에 본고(本稿)의 목적이 있다. 수학교육(數學敎育)의 목적을 이해하는 데에는 수학(數學)의 특성(特性)을 파악함이 가장 중요하다고 생각된다. 이 특성(特性)의 근원을 산수(算數)와 기하(幾何)의 발단(發端)에서 찾아보았으며 각급학교(各級學校)의 학과내용(學科內容)을 수학(數學)의 역사적(的) 발전단계(發展段階)와 현대수학(現代數學)의 특징(特徵)에 비추어 분석하여 보았다. 그 결과 각급학교(各級學校) 교과과정(敎科課程)이 일관성있게 배열되지 않은 면이 있고 하위(下位)의 능력평가(能力評價)에 치우친 감이 많아, 다음 단계의 교육에 지장을 초래하면서도 오히려 학생들이 수학(數學)을 어렵게 생각하게끔 만드는 원인들을 찾을 수 있었다. 이러한 문제를 개선하기 위해서는 장기적(長期的) 연구(硏究)를 할 수 있는 전문연구집단(專問硏究集團)과 활성화된 교사(敎師)의 재훈련제도(再訓練制度)의 필요성과 아울러 인시제도(人試制度), 지도방법(指導方法), 평가방법(評價方法)의 개선(改善)이 이루어져야 하겠다.
