Engineering basic competencies level and educatkonal needs analysis of engineering college graduates (공대 졸업생들의 공학기초능력 수준과 교육 요구 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze engineering basic competencies about the time completed a course and educational needs of engineering college graduates. Survey method using questionnaire was the major research method of this study. A survey of 807 engineering college graduates was carried out. Questionnaire were made of the level of engineering basic competencies of engineering college graduates, its priorities of actual vocation and level of engineering basic competencies of major. Major results of the study, some recommendations for future researches were made as follows: The level of engineering basic competencies of engineering college graduates was 3.3 average(5 full marks). Engineering basic competencies that educational needs were high respectively, were an ability to communicate effectively, an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs, an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams, an ability to understand global culture and cooperate internationally, an ability to design and conduct experiment as well as to analyze and interpret data, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.

  • 지금까지 많은 연구자들에 의해 지반공학 분야는 괄목할 만한 기술발전이 이루어졌습니다. 또한 최근에는 전통적인 학문의 틀을 넘어, 다른 학문과의 상호연계를 통해 기술이 점차 고도화 되고 적용분야도 확대되고 있습니다. 이러한 시점에서 앞으로 다가올 미래의 지반공학기술을 예측하는 것도 매우 의미 있는 일이라 생각하기에 지반공학 각 분야의 전문가들을 모시고 <지반공학에 대한 현황과 전망>이라는 주제로 특집내용을 기획하였습니다. 2005년도 올 한 해 동안은 기초설계분야, 토목섬유분야, 오염토양복원분야, 지반정수의 결정분야, 지반구조물의 내진설계분야, 사면 및 터널분야 등을 다루고자 합니다. 지반공학 기술의 현재의 기술을 재조명하고 앞으로 발전해야하는 방향을 제시하게 되는 본 특집에 많은 회원 여러분의 관심을 부탁드립니다.

A Study on Shell Foundation Behaviour in Cohesionless Soil (사질토 지반에서 Shell 기초 거동에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, the behaviour of shell foundation was studied. In the theoretical program, the general shallow foundation theories and failure mechanism developed by Terzaghi, Mayerhof and others were reviewed and compared. In the numerical study, the 2 and 3 dimensional FEM simulations were carried out using an uncoupled-analysis approach. The results obtained from the model test show that the bearing capacity of shell foundation was about 25% to 30% larger than that of general foundation. Due to the cases of shell angle, the maximum bearing capacity of shell foundation shows when the shell angle of foundation was $60^{\circ}$. In addition, even if the shell foundation has various advantages compared with the general foundations as described above, the practical verifications in full scale size will be necessary to use in the field and will be helpful in the technical development of other special foundations.

  • In recent days, the foundations of huge structures in general and mega foundations of grand bridges and high-rise buildings in particular are required in geotechnical engineering. This study described 3 dimensional behavior of mat foundation on soft rock based on a numerical study using 3D finite element method. A series of numerical analyses were performed for various soil conditions and mat rigidities under vertical loading. Based on the results of the parametric study, it is shown that the prediction of the settlement, cross sectional tensile stress and bending moments in the mat is overestimated in the analysis without considering interface behavior in comparison with the analysis considering interface between mat and rock mass.

유한요소법과 기초공학

  • 유한요소법의 도입과 Computer 산업의 발전으로 그동안 정확한 이론적 해석에만 의존하던 많은 구조해석 문제들이 유한요소법을 이용하여 근사해를 구할 수 있게 되었다. 그러나 유한요소법 S/W에 대한 정확한 이해와 구조에 대한 개념을 정확히 이해하지 못한채 범용 유한요소법 S/W를 이용함으로써 구조분야에 오랜 경험을 가진 사람들 마저도 자신도 모르는 사이에 종종 오류를 범하는 사례를 볼 수 있기 때문에 유한요소법 S/W 이용에 유의해야 한다. 유한요소법의 발전은 그동안 구조해석상 많은 어려움을 겪고 있던 기초공학 분야에도 많은 도움을 주어 요즘 이 분야에서의 유한요소법 이용이 날로 가속화되고 있다. 이런 시점에서 기초공학 분야에 필요한 유한요소법의 기본적인 개념을 소개하고자 한다.

  • In knowledge based society of 21c, engineers require not only their own speciality but also engineering basic competency such as creative thinking, the ability of working together, the ability of communication. Engineering colleges responsible for educating engineers consider developing curriculum including Engineering Basic Competency which is reflecting the needs of the times. By utilizing the accreditation programs of engineering education, UK-SPEC of UK Engineering Council, EA(Engineering Australia) standards/handbook of the Institute of Engineers Australia, O*NET of U.S. Occupational Network, this study generates core elements of engineering basic competency to prove the capability of engineering basic competency required to desired engineers. Core constituents derived from the study were categorized into 3 major areas of the basic engineering literacy in Humanities and Social Sciences(HSS), the ability of Creativity Engineering Design, Career development and each category and constituents were surveyed and checked by engineers in the field to deduce engineering basic competency that should be educated in the engineering college.

  • Engineering design education has been established and implemented as three stages of basic design, element design, and capstone design with the introduction of engineering education accreditation system. In the basic design, the concept and procedure of design is introduced to the beginners of engineering, and the creativity and teamwork is practiced rather than mathematical detailed design for the purpose of being connected to and used effectively in the capstone design. In this study, the opinions of the students performing capstone design after taking basic design were surveyed through questionnaire. Overall, students recognize the importance of basic design education and experienced that it is useful. The results indicate that effective basic engineering design education is being carried out, and are considerably agree to those at the professors in the former survey.
