To investigate the cyclic characteristics of exterior joints in RC frame buildings which are typically used after 1988, 70% scaled T-shaped beam-column subassemblies were designed and tested with a displacement control that is composed of 9 steps, until 3.5% story drift was reached. Axial forces are applied to columns during the experiment to simulate a real situation. The results show that the non-seismic detailed specimens failed before reaching 0.85% story drift, and their strengths are less than 0.85 times the nominal flexural strength which beam or columns should reach. The relationship of principal stress and story drift of exterior joints is similar to the one that Priestly proposed.

The flexural behavior of HSB plate girder with a non-slender web, due to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling, under uniform bending was investigated by the nonlinear finite element analysis. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from SM570-TMC, HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. The flanges and web of selected noncomposite I-girders were modeled as thin shell elements and the geometrical and material nonlinear finite element analysis was performed by the ABAQUS program. The steel was assumed as an elasto-plastic strain hardening material. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were taken into account and their effects on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. The flexural strengths of selected sections obtained by the finite element analysis were compared with the nominal flexural strengths from KHBDC LSD, AASHTO LRFD, and Eurocode and the applicability of these codes in predicting the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of HSB plate girders with a non-slender web was assessed.

Geopolymer concrete is a new class of construction materials that has emerged as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement concrete to reduce the emission of $CO_2$ in the production of concrete. Many researches have been carried out on material developments of geopolymer concrete, however a few studies have been reported on the structural use of them. This paper presents an experiment on the bond behaviors of reinforcements embedded in fly ash based geopolymer concrete. The development lengths of reinforcement for various compressive strength levels of geopolymer concrete, 20, 30 and 40 MPa, and reinforcement diameters, 10, 16 and 25 mm, are investigated. Total 27 specimens were manufactured and pull-out test according to EN 10080 was applied to measure the bond strength and slips between concrete and reinforcements. As the compressive strength levels of geopolymer concrete increase, the bond strength between geopolymer concrete and reinforcement increase. The bond strengths decrease as the diameters of reinforcements increase, which is similar in normal concrete. Also, an estimation equation for the basic development length of reinforcement embedded in geopolymer concrete is proposed based on the experimental results in this study.

Strength design wind loads for the wind resistance design of structures shall be evaluated by the product of wind loads calculated based on the basic wind speed with 100 years return period and the wind load factor 1.3 specified in the provisions of load combinations in Korean Building Code (KBC) 2016. It may be sure that the wind load factor 1.3 in KBC(2016) had not been determined by probabilistic method or empirical method using meteorological wind speed data in Korea. In this paper, wind load factors were evaluated by probabilistic method and empirical method. The annual maximum 10 minutes mean wind speed data at 69 meteorological stations during past 40 years from 1973 to 2012 were selected for this evaluation. From the comparison of the results of those two method, it can be found that the mean values of wind load factors calculated both probability based method and empirical based method were similar at all meteorological stations. When target level of reliability index is set up 2.5, the mean value of wind load factors for all regions should be presented about 1.35. When target level of reliability index is set up 3.0, wind load factor should be presented about 1.46. By using the relationship between importance factor(conversion factor for return period) and wind load factor, the return periods for strength design were estimated and expected wind speeds of all regions accounting for strength design were proposed. It can be found that return period to estimate wind loads for strength design should be 500 years and 800 years in according to target level of reliability index 2.5 and 3.0, respectively. The 500 years basic wind speed map for strength design was suggested and it can be used with a wind load factor 1.0.

An ultra-high strength prestressed prismatic beam of 100 MPa in compressive strength was developed by increasing the watertightness of concrete by utilizing centrifugal molding processes without adding expensive admixtures such as silica fume. The ultra-high strength centrifugal shaped square beam installed on the wall is composited with the upper slab concrete and then subjected to a service load. Horizontal shear stress is generated by bending between the centrifugal molding beam and the floor plate, which causes the beam and floor plate to perform composite behavior through shear connections such as studs and rebars. In this study, a flexural load test was performed on a mock-up specimen that was synthesized by fabricating an RC slab on top of a 100 MPa-class centrifugal shaped beam produced at the factory. proven reliability.
Fixed connection is generally used for beam and column connections of concrete structures, but significant damages at the connection due to severe earthquakes have been reported. In order to reduce damages of the connection and improve seismic performance of the connection, several innovative connections have been suggested. One newly proposed connection type allows a rotation of the connection for applications in rotating or rocking beams, columns, and shear walls. Such structural elements would provide a nonlinear lateral force-displacement response since their contact depth developed during rotation is gradually reduced and the stress across the sections of the elements is non-linearly distributed around a contact area, which is called an elastic hinge region in the present study. The purpose of the present study is to define the elastic hinge region or length for the rocking columns, through investigating the cross-sectional stress distribution during their lateral behavior. Performing a finite element analysis (FEA), several parameters are considered including axial load levels (5% and 10% of nominal strength), different boundary conditions (confined-ends and cantilever types), and slenderness ratios (length/depth = 5, 7, 10). The FEA results showed that the elastic hinge length does not directly depend on the parameters considered, but it is governed by a contact depth only. The elastic hinge length started to develop after an opening state and increased non-linearly until a rocking point(pre-rocking). However, the length did not increase any more after the rocking point (post-rocking) and remained as a constant value. Half space model predicting the elastic hinge length is adapted and the results are compared with the numerical results.

In this paper, using a pattern transformation triggered by deformation, we propose a porous structure that exhibits the characteristic of negative Poisson's ratio in both tension and compression. Due to the lack of torque for rotational motion of ligaments, the existing porous structure of circular holes shows positive Poisson's ratio under tension loading. Also, the porous structure of elliptic holes has a drawback of low durability due to stress concentration. Thus, we design curved ligaments to increase the rotational torque under tension and to alleviate the stress concentration such that strain energy is uniformly distributed in the whole structure. The developed structure possesses better stiffness and durability than the existing structures. It also exhibits the negative Poisson ratio in both compression and tension of 10% nominal strain. Through nonlinear finite element analysis, the performance of developed structure is compared with the existing structure of elliptic holes. The developed structure turns out to be significantly improved in terms of stiffness and durability.

Current standard code for R.C. design consists of two conventional design parts, so called WSD and USD, which are based on ACI 318-63 and 318-71 code provisions. The safety factors of our WSD and USD design criteria which are taken primarily from ACI 318-63 code are considered to be not appropriate compared to out country's design and construction practices. Furthermore, even the ACI safety factors are not determined from probabilistic study but merely from experiences and practices. This study investigates the safety level of R.C. flexural members designed by the current WSD safety provisions based on Second Moment Reliability theory, and proposes a rational but efficient way of determining the nominal safety factors and the associated flexural allowable stresses of steel bars and concretes in order to provide a consistent level of target reliability. Cornell's Mean First-Order Second Moment Method formulae by a log normal transformation of resistance and load output variables are adopted as the reliability analysis method for this study. The compressive allowable stress formulae are derived by a unique approach in which the balanced steel ratios of the resulting design are chosen to be the corresponding under-reinforced sections designed by strength design method with an optimum reinforcing ratio. The target reliability index for the safety provisions are considered to be ${\beta}=4$ that is well suited for our level of construction and design practices. From a series of numerical applications to investigate the safety and reliability of R.C. flexural members designed by current WSD code, it has been found that the design based on WSD provision results in uneconomical design because of unusual and inconsistent reliability. A rational set of reliability based safety factors and allowable stress of steel bars and concrete for flexural members is proposed by providing the appropriate target reliability ${\beta}=4$.

Current R.C. retaining wall design is bared on WSD, but the reliability based design method is more rational than the WSD. For this reason, this study proposes a reliability based design criteria for the cantilever retaining wall, which is most common type of retaining wall, and also proposes the theoretical bases of nominal safety factors of stability analysis by introducing the reliability theory. The limit state equations of stability analysis and design of each part of cantilever retaining wall are derived and the uncertainty measuring algorithms of each equation are also derived by MFOSM using Coulomb's coefficient of the active earth pressure and Hansen's bearing capacity formula. The levels of uncertainties corresponding to these algorithms are proposed appropriate values considering our actuality. The target reliability indices (overturning: ${\beta}_0$=4.0, sliding: ${\beta}_0$=3.5, bearing capacity: [${\beta}_0$=3.0, design for flexure: [${\beta}_0$=3.0, design for shear: ${\beta}_0$=3.2) are selected as optimal values considering our practice based on the calibration with the current R.C. retaining wall design safety provisions. Load and resistance factors are measured by using the proposed uncertainties and the selected target reliability indices. Furthermore, a set of nominal safety factors, allowable stresses, and allowable shear stresses are proposed for the current WSD design provisions. It may be asserted that the proposed LRFD reliability based design criteria for the R.C. retaining wall may have to be incorporated into the current R.C. design codes as a design provision corresponding to the USD provisions of the current R.C. design code.
In this investigation, results of laboratory tests on four reinforced concrete flat plate interior connections with elongated rectangular column support which has been used widely in tall residential buildings are presented. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an effect of column aspect ratio (${\beta}_c={c_1}/{c_2}$=side length ratio of column section in the direction of lateral loading $(c_1)$ to the direction of perpendicular to $c_1$) on the hysteretic behavior under earthquake type loading. The aspect ratio of column section was taken as $0.5{\sim}3\;(c_1/c_2=1/2,\;1/1,\;2/1,\;3/1)$ and the column perimeter was held constant at 1200mm in order to achieve nominal vertical shear strength $(V_c)$ uniformly. Other design parameters such as flexural reinforcement ratio $(\rho)$ of the slab and concrete strength$(f_{ck})$ was kept constant as ${\rho}=1.0%$ and $f_{ck}=40MPa$, respectively. Gravity shear load $(V_g)$ was applied by 30 percent of nominal vertical shear strength $(0.3V_o)$ of the specimen. Experimental observations on punching failure pattern, peak lateral-load and story drift ratio at punching failure, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation in the hysteresis loop, and steel and concrete strain distributions near the column support were examined and discussed in accordance with different column aspect ratio. Eccentric shear stress model of ACI 318-05 was evaluated with experimental results. A fraction of transferring moment by shear and flexure in the design code was analyzed based on the test results.
