  • The influence of the bubble structure and strength characteristics on the freeze-thaw resistance of high strength concrete is investigated by the laboratory experiment. The test conditions are formed in the manner that water is continueusly supplied externally and the specimens were received severe weather actions from ordinary to significantly low temperatures. The experiments are performed in two stages. In the first stage, the relation between the durability to frost action and the bubble structure is analyzed especially with respect to the water-cement ratio and the amount of air. The AE and non-AE concrete specimens made of ordinary portland cement are used in the test. In the second stage, the non-AE concrete specimens using vibratory compaction to improve the durability to frost action, and the high watertight specimens of rapid hardening portland cement to increase their initial strength are produced and tested. The degree of watertightness of the specimens is determined by measuring the permeability of the specimens and the bubble structure of the high watertight concrete is also estimated.

  • The purpose of this research is to estimate the drying shrinkage and durability of concrete using the fine river sand to utilize it actively as an alternative aggregate for concrete. For this purpose, the fine river sand samples were collected at the mid and down stream of main stream of Nakdong-River, and then the concrete specimens using the fine river sand were made according to strength level. After obtaining relation equation between compressive strength and cement-water ratio from the mix experiment result, the concrete specimens using different fine river sand were made for the specified concrete strength of 35MPa, and then their drying shrinkage and durability such as the resistance to freeze and thaw and carbonation were evaluated. It was observed from the test result that the durability of concrete using fine river sand was similar to that of concrete using reference sand, but the drying shrinkage of concrete using the fine river sand with small fineness was comparatively larger than that of concrete using reference sand.

  • Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAF Dust) Is residual dust produced during the manufacturing of metal products from heavily heated electric arc furnace. Many researches have focused on recycling and reusing EAF Dust for industrial and construction purposes. However, most of these researches were aimed at obtaining useful heavy metal powders by treating toxic metallic materials in EAF Dust. Also, few researches dealt with using EAF Dust as admixture in concrete mixture (i.e., slag dust). In this study, EAF Dust is used as admixture in concrete mixture content considering economical feasibility and construction applicability. The concrete specimens mixed with EAF Dust is then tested in compression and tension to study its strength and ductility as well as its failure mechanism. The compression and tension (by split cylinder test) test results are compared to the results from the specimens without EAF Dust to understand the chemical stability and mechanical characteristic of concrete specimens with EAF Dust. For the experiment, 6 types of admixture added concrete were studied: ⑴Combination of EAF Dust and blast-furnace slag in 1 to 1 ratio, ⑵Combination of EAF Dust and blast-furnace slag in 1 to 2 ratio, ⑶EAF Dust only, ⑷blast-furnace slag only, ⑸fly ash only, and ⑹no admixture. The experimental results show that the strength of EAF Dust added specimen has lower early age strength but higher 28 day strength when compared to other specimens. Also, the Elastic Modulus of EAF Dust is higher(28 days) than other specimens. The study results prove that EAF Dust can be used as an effective admixture in concrete for specific usages.

  • In order to use the spherical atomizing reduction steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) instead of the fine aggregate of polymer concrete composites, various specimens were prepared with various replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag and the addition ratios of polymer binder. Physical properties of these specimens were investigated through the absorption test, the compressive strength test, the flexural strength test, the hot water resistance test, the pore analysis and the micro-structure using scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of specimens with 7.5% of polymer binders increased with the increase of replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag, but those of the specimens with 8.0% or more of polymer binders showed a maximum strength at a certain replacement ratio due to the material segregation causing the increase of fluidity. By hot water resistance tests, the compressive strength, flexural strength, average pore diameter, and bulk density decreased but the total pore volume and pore diameter increased. It was concluded that the amount of polymer binders could be reduced by maximum 23.8%, because the workability of the polymer concrete was remarkably improved by using the atomizing reduction steel slag instead of fine aggregate. However, since the use of atomizing reduction steel slag decreased the resistance of the polymer concrete to hot water, further studies are required.

  • This study was attempted in order to search for phyosical properties on various mix designs of concrete as ne of studies relating top revention against corrosion by action of sea water in the West Sea. In this study, as concerete mix design, fly ash, pozzolith and vinsolresin were used as admixtures for normal portland cement respectively, and pozzolan cement and normal cement were also used for each plain concrete. Concrete specimens were made and cured in accordance with the Korean Standard Specifications for concrete. In thetest, compressive strengths of the specimens were measured at the following ages; 7-day, 28-days and 3-months. Absorption test was made by immersing the specimens in water kept at boiling temperature for 5 hours. The results obtained from the tests are summarized as follows; 1. The use of fly ash as an admixture in mix design of concrete, has an effect on compressive strength at each age. But it is actually not effective on absorption by concrete, as the result of the fly ash concrete is almost the same at that of ordinary plain concrete. 2. The use of pozzolith as an admixture in mix design of concrete, has an effect on both of compressive strength at each age and absorption rate. The pozzolith is more effective than vinsol resin, relating to improvement for physical proreties of concrete. 3. The use of vinsol resin as an admixture in mix design of concrete, has also an effect on both of compressive strength at each age and absorption rate. As the above fact, effectiveness of the vinsol resin is some what lower than pozzolith, as far as physical properties of the concrete are concerned. 4. Plain concrete used pozzolan cement only is the most effective on both of strength at each age and absorption rate in this study. The pozzolan cement is characteristic of higher strenth as the age is later. 5. Relationship between compreessive strengths and absorption rates of the concrete is shown by a different regression line dependingon ages. The gradient of the regression line is steeper as the age is later. 6. Throught physical test, it may be expected that the use of pozzolith and vinsol resinas asan admixture respectively will be better resistant than fly ash or ordinary plain concrete and that plain pozzolan concrete will also be the best resistant to action of sea water due to improvement of theirphysical properties.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental work on both strength characteristics and durability of concrete or mortar having 50% ground granulate blastfurnace slag(GBS) with different fineness levels (4,450, 6,000 and $8,000cm^2/g$). Compressive and split tensile strength test results indicated that the concrete with a higher fineness level of GBS exhibited a better strength development due to the acceleration of latent hydraulic property at the later curing stage compared with ordinary portland cement concrete. Meanwhile, it was found that a higher fineness level of GBS showed some negative effects on the resistance against freezing-thawing action. However, incorporation of GBS to concrete, irrespective of fineness levels, significantly enhanced the chloride ions penetration resistance. The resistance against sulfate attack of mortar with GBS was greatly dependent on the attacking sources from sulfate environments.

  • Since the 1970s, the mechanical properties of concrete at high temperature, such as compressive strength, elastic modulus, thermal strain, etc. have been investigated. Internal and external factors should be effect to concrete elevated temperature. In particular, the thermal properties of aggregate and cooling conditions are most important to estimate residual mechanical properties. This study evaluates the mechanical properties of concrete with aggregate type and cooling methods. We use normal and light aggregate for different thermal properties, and also test mechanical properties to use ${\O}100{\times}200$ mm cylinder specimen according to target temperature, slow cooling and water cooling. We found that normal aggregate concrete that uses is more highly influenced by cooling conditions than concrete that uses light aggregate concrete. In addition, the residual mechanical properties of concrete increase as cooling velocity lowers.

  • In the conventional axial load transfer analysis for composite piles (i.e., steel pipe pile filled with concrete), it was assumed that the concrete's strain is same as the measured steel's strain and the elastic modulus of the steel and the concrete calculated by formular as prescribed by specification is used in calculation of pile axial load. But, the pile axial load calculated by conventional method had some difference with the actual pile load. So, the behavior of a composite pile could not be analyzed exactly. Thus, the necessity to measure the strain for each pile components was proposed. In this study, the verification test for DRS (Deformable Rod Sensor) developed to measure the strain of each pile component (i.e., the steel and the concrete) was performed. In the calculation of pile axial load using the DRS, elastic modulus of concrete could be determined by the uniaxial compression test for the concrete cylinder samples made in the test site and an average tangential modulus in the stress range of (0.2∼0.6)f$_ck$ was taken.

  • High Strength Concrete has a disadvantage of the brittle failure under fire due to the spalling. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure under fire and polypropylene (PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The silica fume which is essentially mixed in high strength concrete decrease the permeability of concrete, and this will increase the degree of spalling. The fire resistance characteristics of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various contents of PP fiber and silica fume were investigated in this study. In results, the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the content of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2% and the ratio decreases as the content of silica fume increases from 7% to 21%.

  • Stone column or granular compaction pile have been used in widely during the several decades as a technique to reinforce soft cohesive soils and increase bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation soil. The bearing capacity of the granular compaction pile is governed mainly by the lateral confining pressure mobilized in the native soft soil to restrain bulging collapse of the granular pile. Therefore, the technique becomes unfeasible in soft, compressible clayey soils that do not provide sufficient lateral confinement. This paper presents the main results of numerical study of granular compaction pile which is partly mixed with lean concrete. 3D finite element analyses are performed with composite reinforced foundations by both granular compaction pile and partly mixed granular compaction pile with lean-mixed concrete.
