The core drilling method is considered to be the most effective and common method of assessing the compressive strength of concrete in existing reinforced concrete buildings for structural repair and retrofit. In general, core specimens within reinforcing bars are not permitted in the regulations with regard to assessing concrete strength even if the core specimens can contain the bars in some cases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the reinforcement arrangement on the concrete compressive strength as a basic research to propose the quantitative criteria of strength for core specimens containing reinforcements. To complete the basic research, cylinder specimens inserted in a variety of reinforcement arrangements were prepared and tested.
This study dealt with size effect of specimen in measuring deformation strength and estimating rut resistance of asphalt concretes under static loading using Kim test. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 6 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders were used for preparation of 14 dense-graded mixtures. Mixtures were prepared based on optimum asphalt content by Marshall compactor (S= 10cm) and gyratory compactor (S= 15cm) for Kim test and for wheel tracking test. In statistical analysis by general linear model (GLM) procedure of SAS, the diameter of specimen was found not to be a significant factor that affect the Kim test result. Therefore, it was found that either loom-diameter or 15cm-diameter of specimen gave no significant difference in deformation strength ($K_D$) values in Kim test for any aggregate mixture. However, the thickness of specimen was found to be a significant factor in determining $K_D$. It is estimated that $K_D$ is a function of y, vertical deformation, and y has something to do with thickness of specimen. Therefore, it is suggested that the thickness of specimen should not be higher than 6.6cm, and the correction factor depending on the thickness value should be developed in the future study.

This Study is performed Mock-up test accounting for height of placement to review behavior of mass concrete according to kinds of cement & form. First, we measured hydration heat and show a different hydration heat generation characteristics as compared with each other. And we measured mortar outflow, the strength of concrete core and standard specimens, concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration in order to durability estimation of concrete. This study was aims to improve quality of mass concrete under marine environment.
The purposes of this study are to estimate thestrength of concrete and quantify the deterioration of concrete by a unique X-ray technique with a contrast medium. In order to estimate the strength of concrete, specimens with different water-cement ratios were fabricated using non-air-entrained concrete, air-entrained concrete and mortar to determine the relationship between their compressive strength and the transit dose obtained by the X-ray technique. Also, an experiment to quantify deterioration was carried out on specimens that were subjected to freezing and thawing action to different levels of dynamic elastic modulus. As a result of this experiment, estimation of the strength and relative dynamic elastic modulus of deteriorated mortar, concrete and air-entrained concrete was found feasible by measuring the transit dose by the X-ray technique.

Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) has recently been one of the most active research fields in Korea as well as in foreign countries, because it can contribute to a longer life and economic efficiency of structures. Although precast-type UHPC fabricated in a factory is preferable in terms of quality control and reduction of construction period, there exist, even in the precast structure, some parts that need to be cast in-place such as the joints between precast segments. In the cast-in-place UHPC, however, it is probable that an optimum curing condition can hardly be realized in contrast to the factory production. In this study, therefore, the trend of compressive strength development of UHPC was experimentally investigated by assuming various inferior curing conditions that may be anticipated at a construction site. Concrete specimens were fabricated and cured under different conditions with the variables such as curing temperature, delay time before the initiation of curing, duration of curing time and moisture condition. The strengths were compared with those of the specimens cured by standard high temperature steam. Through the analysis of the test results, some minimum requirements for curing have been proposed that are required when the UHPC is cast in-place. It is expected, through this study, that practical use of UHPC in construction sites can be increased.

In construction site, there are some occasions where concrete under initial curing is being affected by nitration from nearby vibration sources. To study these effects, in this paper, strength characteristics of concrete specimens subjected to continuous vibration up to 12 hours in vertical direction after concrete placement were observed. And through the vibration time control experiment where a number of time combinations consisted of times before and after applying vibration during initial curing period were used as experimental parameters, possibility of concrete strength improvement was investigated. From the experimental results, it could be seen that the concrete strengths were mostly decreased due to the increase of vibration velocity during initial curing period. But fluctuation ratio of concrete strength did not have any close correlations with the vibration times. And results of vibration time control experiment showed that if times before applying vibration sustains at least more than 3 hours, subsequent vibrations after that hours do not affect the concrete strength in any unfavorable ways.

Effects of tensile strength and aspect ratio of steel fiber on compressive and flexural behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) with high- and normal-strength were investigated. Also, this study explores compressive behavior of SFRC with different loading rate. For this purpose, four types of steel fiber were used for SFRC with specified compressive strength of 35 and 60 MPa, respectively. Cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 150 mm and height of 300 mm were made for compression test, and prismatic specimens with a $150{\times}150mm$ cross-section and 450 mm span length were made for flexural test. Test results from compression and flexural tests indicated that the toughness of concrete significant increased with steel fibers. Especially, using steel fiber with high tensile strength and aspect ratio can be lead to performance improvement of high-strength SFRC. In this study, equations are suggested to predict compressive toughness ratio of SFRC from flexural toughness ratio.
A 5-20 cm thick shocrete has been routinely constructed for NATM tunneling method to stabilize and confine the excavated rock of tunnel construction site. A $40kg/m^3$ of steel fibers are usually mixed into such shotcrete but these steel fibers may not be evenly distributed depending on shotcrete machines, mixing ratios and excavated rock conditions. In this study, square column shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}55cm$ were prepared with 5 equal layers and 5 or 20% cement ratio. The specimens were prepared with different reinforced-patterns: non-reinforced, middle layer-reinforced, 1, 3, and 5 layers-reinforced, or all layers reinforced. The specimens were air-cured for 7 days and tested for flexural strength. The influence of steel-fiber distribution on flexural strength and toughness of shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens was investigated. In the case of a specimen with cement ratio of 20%, a flexural strength increased as a number of fiber-reinforced layer increased. The flexural strength of one-layer reinforced specimen showed 20% less than that of evenly fiber-distributed specimen. On the other hand, a specimen with cement ratio of 5% decreased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased. A toughness index increased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased, regardless of cement ratios. The toughness index of evenly fiber-distributed specimen showed 2-3 times as large as that of one-layer reinforced specimen.

Cumulative damage characteristics of concrete, on which rapetitive loads are applied, are investigated. Preliminarily, a series of uniaxial compression tests on cylindrical specimens of plain concrete is carried out to find out that, among various factors, stress levels of repetitive loadings and loading order are the most governing factors of cumulative damage of concrete. Based on this preliminary study, fatigue tests are carried out applying two levels of stresses, stepwisely. As a result, it is found that characteristics of cumulative damage of concrete are governed by nonlinear relationships and do not follow Miner's linear theory. It is also observed that cumulative damage characteristics and static strengths of concrete vary with loading history of stresses. Empirical equations which may be useful in predicting fatigue characteristics and remaining life of concrete stuctures are proposed for concrete subjected two stress levels.
