In this study, the effect of different silt contents on the shear characteristics of silty sands was evaluated. Two series of triaxial compression tests were performed on the cylindrical specimens of compacted Nakdong river sand with 10% and 30% silt contents under unconsolidated undrained condition. All identical specimens were prepared to compact with same initial water content for five layers and saturated using control panel and then sheared under initial effective confining pressure, 100 to 400kPa. All specimens exhibited a strain softening tendency after failure in stress-strain curves and deviator stresses of specimens with 10% silt content were greater than those of specimens with 30% silt content. Pore water pressures of specimens with 10% silt content were observed negative(i.e. swelling) due to increasing void ratio after failure but those of specimens with 30% silt content were shown only positive. The behavior of compacted cylindrical specimens with low silt content was more dilative than that of high silt content. Peak deviator stresses decreased as increasing silt content and peak pore water pressures increased as increasing silt content.
The reduction phenomena of concrete compressive strength with the size of specimens have been extensively investigated, but till now the adequate analysis technique is not fixed. The existing research results show that the bigger the member size, the smaller the strength. This means the nonlinear fracture mechanics theory is needed in order to analyze the fracture behaviors of concrete and the size effect. There is a few model equations that is to predict the size effect of compressive strength of standard and non-standard cylindrical specimen. However, theses equations did not considered the difference of fracturing mechanism which depends on the strength level. In this paper, model equations to predict compressive strength of concrete considering the size effect and strength level are suggested. The size effect model suggested in this paper shows good prediction compared with the existing test data of various concrete size and strength level.
Purpose of this study is to quantitatively characterize the fracture roughness which was measured with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The roughness discrete data measured by confocal laser microscope were analyzed by spectral analysis and fast Fourier transform (FFT).The roughness data by used noise reduction filter were applied for fractal analysis to describe roughness features quantitatively. Artificial fractures created by Brazilian test on granites were used to measure fracture roughness under the confocal laser scanning microscope. Measurements were performed along three scan lines on each fracture surface. 36 scan lines were determined on 12 specimens in total. Features of roughness showed that coarse and medium grained granites tend to more rough features than those of fine grained granites. Continuous analog data of roughness is possible to described as discrete data of measure roughness with a fixed interval under the confocal laser microscope. Results of FFT with the measured data showed the highest values on the second harmonics. Distribution of average amplitude of second harmonics was observed 0.9853 in coarse grained granite, 1.0792 in medium grained granite and 0.6794 in fine grained granite. This indicates that the larger roughness has the higher energy of harmonics as the result of fractal analysis in low frequency zone.
In this study, an influence of mixing ratio among firing oyster shell, non-firing oyster shell, magnetic separated converter steel slag and fly ash used as admixtures on strength properties of soil cement was evaluated by correlation analysis among compressive strength, deformation modulus and mixing ratio of admixtures. As a result, the strength of the specimens containing non-firing oyster shells was found to be larger than that of firing oyster shells, and it was confirmed that firing oyster shells could negatively affect the strength of soil cement specimens unlike previous studies. In addtion, there was a positive correlation between the ratio of magnetic separated converter slag and strength properties, so it is confirmed that it can be used as an admixture.
The reduction phenomena of concrete compressive strength with the size of cylinders have been very interested in, but till now the adequate. analysis technique is not fixed. Based on the existing research results. the bigger the member size is, the smaller the strengt.h is. However. the real test ~.csults reveal that the wduction rate becomes blunt and there are considerable differences between size offrct law and real results. The punposc. ofthis paper is to propose tho model equat.ion which covers the compressive strength of' cylinder specimens in case of general hight/dialnetcr ratio in terms of the size effect. he effect of maximum aggregate size on the microcrack zone was also studied, and the model equation was proposed by considering the concept of'the characteristic length. These results will also be used to predict the cornprcssivt. stxngth of various sized concrete cores sampled from existing structures.
Jurassic granites of three sites, Pocheon, Geochang and Habcheon, were tested to investigate the effect of microcracks on Physical and mechanical properties of the granites. Fifteen oriented core specimens were used for the physical property test. The test result shows that porosity is almost proportioned to water content. P-wave velocity is the highest in the direction of axis ‘H’, intersection of two major microcrack sets and the lowest in the axis ‘R’, normal to the rift plane. Compressional strength tests were carried out for each core specimen taken parallel with axes ‘R’, ‘G’ and ‘H’, measuring strains. The results revealed a strong correlation between microcrack orientation and other mechanical properties such as rock strength.
When the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member is evaluated, the effect of member size is usually not considered. For various types of loading, however, the strength always decreases with the increment of member size. In this paper the size effect of a flexural compression member is investigated by experiments. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment was tested using three different sizes of specimens with a compressive strength of 528 kg/$cm^2$. According to test results the size effect on flexural compressive strength was apparent, and more distinct than that for uniaxial compressive strength of cylinders. Finally a model equation was derived using regression analyses with experimental data.
