  • The physical properties of Uhangri sedimentary rocks were investigated to provide the conservation strategy of Dinosaur trace fossil in the Haenam. The porosity, void ratio, dry density, water content, and degree of saturation were calculated according to the proper laboratory experiments for 9 sedimentary specimens. The flexural strength (or modulus of rupture) and thermal expansion coefficient were measured using the universal testing machine and dilatometer, respectively. The Uhangri sedimentary rocks have very low porosity, void ratio, and water content. The flexural strength of shales are 24.16~42.84, and those of sandstones are 16.34~ $43.52N/mm^2$, which are much weaker than common sedimentary rocks. The very low flexural strength of sedimentary rocks despite very low porosity, is ascribed to fine fissures in the rocks. The thermal expansion coefficient of rocks were $14.7~21.3\Times10^{-6 }$, which are 2~2.5 times as high as alumina and about 10 times as high as talc. As the content of chert in the sandstone increases, the porosity, void ratio, and water content increase, while the dry density and degree of saturation decrease. The chert-bearing sandstone have higher porosity and thermal expansion coefficient, and lower flexural strength compared to those free of chert.

  • The geology of Saok island area in Jeollanam-do can be divided into 4 lithologic types: Jurassic granite, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, acidic tuff and acidic dikes. In the Saok island area, dinosaur and web-footed bird footprints, arthropod trackway and silicified wood were found recently in the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks which composed of alternating light grey sandstone, shale and mudrock. The fossil-bearing sedimentary rock is overlain by an acidic tuff, and the sedimentary rock and acidic tuff are cut by acidic dykes. In order to constrain the depositional age of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in Saok island area, SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages were determined in the tuffaceous sandstone and overlying acidic tuff. Zircon U-Pb ages of the sandstone and tuff are $83.58{\pm}0.86$ and $79.80{\pm}0.75Ma$, respectively, which belong to the Campanian of the Late Cretaceous. The U-Pb age of the acidic tuff indicates the eruption time of acidic tuff and thus the minimum age of the fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks in this area. Therefore, the formation age of the dinosaur and web-footed bird footprints can be constrained between 83.6 and 79.8 Ma.

  • In this article, concepts, types, and aspects of geological heritage with increasing interests as utilization as tourist attractions domestically and internationally are introduced, and the characteristics of the interpretive facilities for geological heritages in western Australia, one of the most famous geotourism areas, are considered. Based on this, the potential geotourism for the Korean Cretaceous geological heritages including dinosaur fossil sites is discussed in diverse aspects including academic values, academic and tourism infrastructures, characteristics of geotourists, systematic devices for conservation of geological heritage, economic value, and sustainability as tourist attractions. Although the Korean Cretaceous geosites are not quite competent in their scale or diversity when compared to world-class geosites, convenient access, world-class unique geographical characteristics of each geosites, and relatively cheaper travelling expenses seems to be able to give the geotourism of the South Korean Cretaceous geosites a competitive edge, attractive for international and domestic tourists seeking unique experience of 'Age of dinosaurs' for short periods with easy access from metropolitan areas and low costs. Likewise, the development of geotourism for the Korean Cretaceous geosites can revitalize the geotourism industry in South Korea, contributing to the growth in job opportunities, including students majoring in geological sciences at University.

  • The Tracksite of Cretaceous Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs in Jeongchon, Jinju was discovered in late 2017 during the construction of the Ppuri industry complex. This site is a natural heritage site with a high paleontological value, as it preserves fossils of various types of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and animal traces at a dense concentration. In this study, we surveyed that physical weathering such as joint, crack, scaling, exfoliation, and fragmentation occurred through field research in the fossil site, and conducted basic research on conservation science to reduce the damage. To this end, among the eight levels identified after excavation, the rocks of Level 3, which yielded a large number of theropod footprint fossils, and Level 4, which yielded pterosaur footprint fossils, were analyzed for material characteristics and evaluation of the effectiveness of consolidation and adhesion. This results showed that the rocks in the Level 3 stratum were dark gray siltstone and the rocks in the Level 4 stratum were dark gray shale, which contained a large amount of calcite and were composed of quartz, plagioclase, mica, alkali feldspar, and other clay minerals, which are likely to be damaged by rainfall under external conditions. As a result of conducting an artificial weathering experiment by dividing the probationary sample into four groups: untreated, consolidation treatment, anti-swelling treatment, and adhesive treatment, the consolidation and the swelling inhibitor showed an effect immediately after treatment, but did not show a blocking effect under a freezing-thawing environment. The adhesive showed that the adhesive effect was maintained even under freezing-thawing conditions. In order to preserve the fossil sites at Jeongchon in the future, in addition to temporary measures to block the inflow of moisture, practical measures such as the construction of protective facilities should be prepared.

  • Total 57 sauropod tracks are found from the Cretaceous Kyokpori Formation in the Buangun, Jeollabukdo, Korea. Six sauropod trackways in second stratigraphic level of three stratigraphic levels were recognized and described. The type of sauropod trackways is a wide-gauge trackway which has been generally in Cretaceous sauropod trackways. On the basis of foot length, trackway orientations, and preservation, all of the tracks are thought to have been made by small sauropods moving not only towards and away from the shoreline but also along the shoreline of lacustrine environment.

  • In September 2009, a perfectly preserved fossil of a dinosaur egg nest was discovered in the Cretaceous formations of the Aphaedo area in Shinan, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. In order to estimate the age of dinosaur eggshells and the depositional age of the Cretaceous sediments in Aphaedo area, a whole-rock K-Ar dating was carried out on volcanic pebbles showing a sedimentary structure contemporaneous with the Aphaedo strata, acidic tuffs overlaying the strata conformably, and acidic dike rocks intrude to both of them. Volcanic rocks observed in the strata are 3-20 cm in diameter as pebbles found in lenticular conglomerate and pebble bearing mudstone strata. K-Ar whole-rock dating was performed on six different volcanic pebbles which show a sedimentary structure contemporaneous with the dinosaur egg nest contained in the strata, and all samples show Late Cretaceous ages: Cenomanian ($97.6{\pm}1.9$Ma), Coniacian ($87.6{\pm}1.7$ Ma), Santonian ($84.5{\pm}1.7$Ma) or Campanian ($82.5{\pm}1.6$, $77.3{\pm}1.5$, $75.7{\pm}1.5$ Ma). The K-Ar whole-rock age of acidic tuffs overlaying the Cretaceous formation conformably was estimated to be Campanian ($79.2{\pm}1.6$ or $77.3{\pm}1.5$Ma), when the dating was carried out under the same conditions. The acidic dike intruding both Cretaceous formation and acidic tuff showed a K-Ar whole-rock age of $70.9{\pm}1.4$Ma (Campanian). Therefore, the depositional age of the Cretaceous formation in the Aphaedo area and the time when dinosaurs lived in the study area are considered to be 77-83 Ma. Such results indicate that the ages of dinosaur eggshells from Aphaedo area can be correlated with the ages of the Seonso Formation (81Ma) with dinosaur egg nest fossils and the Uhangri Formation (79-81Ma) with dinosaur, pterosaur and web-footed bird tracks.
