  • When conducting the underground safety impact assessment under the special law in Korea, it is essential to investigate the occurrence of underground cavities. When underground cavities were discovered, the underground safety was assessed through numerical analysis. The previous study has suggested the stability evaluation based on the factor of safety by changing the 2D shape of the small underground cavity. In this study, the effects of small underground cavities considering 3D shapes were examined using a continuum analysis program and compared with the 2D results presented in previous study. If the 3-Dimensional shape of the underground cavity is found close to the sphere type, it would be reasonable to evaluate the factor of safety by the shear strength reduction method regardless of the size and position of the cavity. If a high-aspect ratio underground cavity with a depth of 2 m or more from the ground surface and an aspect ratio (a/b) of 2.0 or more is in the vertical direction, not only the factor of safety but the failure mode shape should be cautions in the stability evaluation using the shear strength reduction method. The results of this study are expected to be basic data on underground safety impact assessment.

  • The cavity inside the combustor increases the mixing efficiency of fuel and air by inducing a oscillation of the flow and the recirculation area with a low speed, and enables continuous combustion by maintaining the flame. In this study, the characteristics of the internal flow by change in the shape parameters of the cavity were analyzed through experiments and two-dimensional computational analysis. It was observed that the flow in the supersonic combustor was greatly influenced by various shape parameters of cavity besides L/D. Even with the same L/D, it was confirmed that the flow type varies depending on the depth of the cavity, either open or closed type, and the aft ramp angle of the cavity and the height of the combustor also affect the flow characteristics. As a result, the change in the shape parameters of the cavity had a great influence on the total pressure loss.

  • A numerical stability analysis was conducted on the large oil storage caverns excavated in a rock mass under high initial horizonal stress. The behaviors of the surrounding rock mass, rockbolts, and shotcrete were analyzedr and stability of the support members were assessed. For a proper support system design, the effect of the modelling technique, cavern shape and rockbolt length on the stability of the cavern was investigated. Results show that installation timing of supports and the change in cavern shape due to stepwise excavation affect the stress induced in support members. Also found was desperate need for a numerical technique which can properly reflect the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete.

  • Numerical computations were carried out to analyze the effect of a sub-cavity at several inlet Mach numbers on the control of cavity-induced pressure oscillations in two-dimensional supersonic flow. The present passive control method, the sub-cavity applied to the front wall of a square cavity, was studied for the inlet Mach numbers of 1.50, 1.83 and 2.50. The results show that the sub-cavity is effective in reducing the oscillations, and a resultant amount of the reduction depended on the inlet Mach number, the length of flat plate, and the depth of sub-cavity used as an oscillation suppressor.

  • A pair of two-way valves typically is used in automotive washing machines, where the water flow direction is frequently reversed and highly pressurized clean water is sprayed to remove the oil and dirt remaining on machined engine and transmission blocks. Although this valve system has been widely used because of its competitive price, its application is sometimes restricted by surging effects, such as pressure ripples occurring in rapid changes in water flow caused by inaccurate valve control. As an alternative, one three-way reversing valve can replace the valve system because it provides rapid and accurate changes to the water flow direction without any precise control device. However, a cavitation effect occurs because of the complicated bottom plug shape of the valve. In this study, the cavitation index and percent of cavitation (POC) were introduced to numerically evaluate fluid flows via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. To reduce the cavitation effect generated by the bottom plug, the optimal shape design was carried out through a parametric study, in which a simple computer-aided engineering (CAE) model was applied to avoid time-consuming CFD analysis and difficulties in achieving convergence. The optimal shape design process using full factorial design of experiments (DOEs) and an artificial neural network meta-model yielded the optimal waist and tail length of the bottom plug with a POC value of less than 30%, which meets the requirement of no cavitation occurrence. The optimal waist length, tail length and POC value were found to 6.42 mm, 6.96 mm and 27%, respectively.

  • In recent years, the occurrence of ground subsidence phenomenon is frequent in Korea. The Korean government has enacted a special law on underground safety and the law will be enforced from January 1, 2018. Under this new law, underground excavation should be assessed for underground safety impacts. After excavation construction, periodic geophysical surveys should be conducted to investigate the occurrence of underground cavities. When underground cavities were discovered, the underground safety was assessed through numerical analysis. However, it is controversial because the method of numerical modeling the discovered underground cavity is due to be established. In this study, the effect of the depth of the underground cavity from the shape of the underground cavity to the underground cavity was studied using a continuum analysis program. In this study, a method to reflect the shape of the underground cavity to the numerical modeling is presented. The relationship between the shape and depth of the underground cavity, and the factor of safety calculated by the shear strength reduction method (SSR) is presented. The results of this study are expected to form the basic data on underground safety impact assessment.

  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the analysis of a super-cavitating two-dimensional hydrofoil. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the foil and cavity surfaces to represent the potential flow around the cavitating hydrofoil. The kinematic boundary condition on the wetted portion of the foil surface is satisfied by requiring that the total potential vanish in the fictitious inner flow region of the foil, and the dynamic boundary condition on the cavity surface is satisfied by requiring thats the potential vary linearly, i.e., the tangential velocity be constant. Green's theorem then results in a potential-based integral equation rather than the usual velocity-based formulation of Hess & Smith type. With the singularities distributed on the exact hydrofoil surface, the pressure distributions are predicted with improved accuracy compared to those of the linearized lilting surface theory, especially near the leading edge. The theory then predicts the cavity shape and cavitation number for an assumed cavity length. To improve the accuracy, the sources and dipoles on the cavity surface are moved to the newly computed cavity surface, where the boundary conditions are satisfied again. This iteration process is repeated until the results are converged. Characteristics of iteration and discretization of the present numerical method are much faster and more stable than the existing nonlinear theories. The theory shows good correlations with the existing theories and experimental results for the super-cavitating flow. In the region of small angles of attack, the present prediction shows and excellent comparison with the Geurst's linear theory. For the long cavity, the method recovers the trends of the Wu's nonlinear theory. In the intermediate regions of the short super-cavitation, the method compares very well with the experimental results of Parkin and also those of Silberman.

  • The effect of the relative distance between two cavity flame holders on the performance of a supersonic combustor was experimentally investigated. A rectangular cross-sectional combustor model with one cavity flame holder on each of two facing walls was used, with two difference distances between cavities of 135 mm and 220 mm. The fuel equivalence ratio was varied as 0.16 and 0.38. A direct-connected type test facility was used to provide Mach 2 flow condition. The test results revealed that the combustion pressure was higher for the shorter cavity distance case. But fuel equivalence ratio did not have large effect on the combustion pressure. It was concluded that, to get higher combustor pressure, there needs to be further combustor configuration change such as smaller cavity distance or tandem cavity installation.
