Development of an Air-Water Combined Cooling System (공냉-수냉 혼합냉각계통 개발)

  • A long term passive cooling system is considered as the most important safety feature for the nuclear design after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011. The conventional active pump driven safety systems are not available during a station Black Out (SBO) accident. The current design requirement on cooling time of the Passive Auxiliarly Feedwater System (PAFS) is about 8 hours only. To meet the 72 hours cooling time, the pool capacity of cooling water tank should be increased as much as 3~4 times larger than that of current water cooling tank. In order to extend the cooling time for 72 hours, a new passive air-water combined cooling system is proposed. This paper provides the feasibility of the combined passive air-water cooling system. The current pool capacity of water cooling system is preserved, and the cooling capability is extended by an additional air cooler.

  • 소성 영역(Sintering zone)에서 클링커(Clinker)의 형상 형성은 시멘트 생산 공정에서 가장 중요한 생산 공정중의 하나이다. 소성공정의 진단 및 최적 제어의 핵심은 써모그래프(Thermo graph), 즉 적외선 카메라를 이용한 온도 분포의 측정이다. 여기에서 다룰 ''PIT Indicator'' 시스템은 분진이 많은 열악한 산업 현장의 연소 시스템에 적용할 수 있도록 특별히 설계한 공냉식의 2개 채널을 가진 광학 장비에 기초하고 있다. 비디오 영상과 써모그래프 이미지 그리고 다양한 연소 특성이 카메라를 통하여 얻어지고 자기 학습 기능을 가진 소프트웨어에서 기록되고 분석된다. 이때 얻은 데이터는 수학적 모델에서 온라인으로 Free Lime 함유율을 예측하는데 이용된다. 열분포의 써모그래프 표시와 공정상의 다양한 운전 특성을 분석하여 주는 ''PIT Indicator'' 소프트웨어를 통하여 다른 공정 제어 시스템과 연결이 가능하다. 이와 같은 하드웨어와 소프트웨어를 이용하여 최적화가 필요한 여러요소들의 최적화를 동시에 그리고 온라인으로 수행할 수가 있다. Free Lime 함유율의 연속적인 온라인 연산을 통해 생산 설비 및 공정에 맞는 최소한의 에너지를 Kiln 에 공급함으로써 근본적으로 1차 연료의 절감이 가능하고 NOx와 같은 유해 가스의 배출량도 제어할 수 있다. 또한 별도로 NOx에 대한 모델을 개발하여 NOx를 정확하게 예측하는 것도 가능하다.

Analysis of Characteristics on Small Air-Conditioning Type Evaporator (소형 공조용 증발기의 특성 해석)

  • When investigating optimum design of the evaporator in the refrigeration and heat pump systems, there is still lack of data for the dynamic characteristics of the evaporator, This is due to the fact that the static characteristics in the evaporator are absolutely difficult to measure and are burdened with uncertainties. In this study, the simulation works for static characteristics in the evaporator of small air conditioner are carried out to obtain the data of dynamic characteristics. In the simulation, the test evaporator is divided by two-phase evaporating region and single-phase heating region. The major parameters are refrigerant flow rate, heat transfer coefficient of air, air velocity and air temperature. The results show that the calculation method for tube length is an easy-to-use to model analysis of static characteristics and to determine state of refrigerant in the evaporator. The effects of the four parameters on the length of evaporating completed point and heat flow rate to the evaporator are clarified.

  • Performance of naturally circulating cooling system of $SF_6$ gas charged transformer was simulated and the variations of gas flow rate, maximum coil temperature, gas temperature and cooling air temperature were investigated with respect to the height of radiator, interplates distance and heat generation rate at core. The results show that the height of radiator most significantly affects the performance of natural circulating cooling system of transformer.

  • The conceptual design of turbine-driven air-cooled 100 MW generator is presented. The generators rating is 100 MW 3-phase 2pole 13.8 kV 0.85 pf 60 Hz. The conceptual design is described by the process of designing the stator, rotor, and obtaining some of equivalent circuit parameters. The design process starts from the output coefficient G, and utilizes the classical design equations with parameters used in the modern designs. The slot dimensions of the stator and rotor are obtained with their respective winding dimensions.

  • To maintain proper operating conditions is important to get optimal output power of a PEMFC stack. The air cooled fuel cell stack is widely used in sub kW PEMFC systems. A 500W air cooled PEMFC stack was experimentally investigated to evaluate the design performance and to get optimal operating conditions for the portable application. The relationship between the operating conditions and the performance was analyzed. The results can be used as design criteria for portable PEMFC under various conditions.

  • Vibration problems induced by an air cooled heat exchanger with axial flow fan were investigated during the operation of a petrochemical plant. Two different studies were done; one was experimental field test and the other was theoretical verification. To find main cause of the blade passing frequency of the fan after installing additional blockage board at the air inlet of the axial fan, the frequency spectrum was measured. The vibrations of the blade passing frequency became higher. The natural frequency of driving support of the heat exchanger was theoretically calculated. It was approximately equal to the blade passing frequency. During the normal operation of the plant, it was impossible to modify the structure of the driving support. Instead, the blade number was increased to reduce vibration level. It increased the ratio of the forcing frequency to the natural frequency of the driving support over the resonance region.

  • Electric vehicles use lithium-ion battery packs as the power supply, where the batteries are connected in series or parallel. The temperature control of each battery is essential to ensure a consistent overall temperature. This study focused on reducing ohmic heating caused by batteries to realize a uniform battery temperature. The battery spacing was optimized to improve air cooling, and the tilt angle between the batteries was varied to optimize the internal structure of the batterypack. Simulations were performed to evaluate the effects of these parameters, and the results showed that the optimal scheme effectively achieved a uniform battery temperature under a constant power discharge. These findings can contribute to future research on cooling methods for battery packs.

  • This paper describes the study of developing air-cooled absorption system which uses a new working solution instead of LiBr solution to improve the performance of system. The absorption chiller-heater considered was an air-cooled, double-effect, $H_2O/LiBr+HO(CH_2)_3$ system of parallel flow type. In this study, we found out the characteristic of new working solution through the cycle simulation and compared the result that of LiBr solution to evaluate. The new working fluid has a wider working range with $8\%$ higher crystallization limit at the saturated refrigerant pressure of 0.8kPa. The optimum designs and operating conditions of air-cooled absorption system were suggested based on this cycle simulation analysis. It was demonstrated that new working fluid substantially improves the performance of the absorption refrigeration machine and is expected to increase the COP by as much as $5\%$.
