  • The fin-tube heat exchanger being used for industrial boiler, radiator, refrigerator has been conducted in various studies to improve it's performance. In this study, the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop was theoretically analyzed according to longitudinal pitch, location of vortex generator, bump phase and number of the tube surface about the plain fin-tube heat exchanger. The boundary condition for the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis applied with the SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model assumed as the tube surface temperature of 333 K, the inlet air temperature of 423-438 K and the inlet air velocity of 1.5~2.1 m/s. The analysis results indicated that the heat transfer coefficient is not affected highly by the longitudinal pitch, and the heat transfer characteristics was more favorable when the vortex generator was located in front of the tube. Also the bump phase of the tube surface indicated that circle type was more appropriate than serrated type and triangle type in the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop, and the sixteen's bump phase of circle type was most favorable.

  • This work is performed to investigate the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in the air side of finned-tube heat exchanger for air conditioner. Experimental apparatus and method are described to simulate the heat exchanger performance by using the three times enlarged model. The pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient were measured and compared for the heat exchangers with a plane fin and a commercial strip fin. The measured data for the strip fin agree well with those of prototype within a few percentages. For the plane fin, the measured data had similar trend to Gray & Webb's correlation at high air velocity, however a new correlation is needed to give more accurate prediction at low air velocity. It is found that most heat was transferred around the front row of the two-row heat exchanger, and the ratio of thermal load at the front tube row was increased for decreasing air velocity.

  • Four different methods of reducing the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two different heat and mass transfer models and two different fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the data with the reduction methods revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity independent heat transfer coefficients. Two different fin efficiency models - enthalpy model and humidity model - yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.

  • For the study of an effect that fin thickness and shape of heat exchanger have on the elevation of heat transfer efficiency, we make models of plate fin type heat exchanger and louvered fin type heat exchanger which was given a transformation of fin thickness in plate f)n type heat exchanger and louvered fin type heat exchanger which are often used now. And the effect of fin thickness on pressure drop and characteristics of heat transfer was experimented and analysed when air velocity and temperature of plate heating was a variable. The results of experiment shows below. Pressure drop shows larger in louvered fin type exchanger than in plate fin type exchanger, size of pressure drop shows like this order that fin thickness is 0.3mm, 0.2mm, 0.1mm. Mean heat transfer coefficient shows higher in louvered fin type exchanger than in plate fin type exchanger, size of mean heat transfer coefficient by fin thickness shows same in both case in louvered fin type heat exchanger and plate fin type exchanger like this order that fin thickness is 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.3mm.

  • Heat transfer rate can be increased by increasing the heat transfer area. In this study, wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchangers with $P_t/P_l=1.03$ were tested and compared with louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l=0.6$. Results show that heat transfer capacities of wide louver samples are larger (9.8% at one row, 13.6% at two row and 4.1% at three row) than those of conventional louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 1.78, the increase of heat transfer capacity is rather small, possibly due to the smaller heat transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The j factor of the louver fin was 67% larger at one row, 42% larger at two row and 52% larger at three row. The f factor of the louver fin was 81% larger at one row, 63% larger at two row and 60% larger at three row. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factors are not pronounced and the j factor decreased as the number of tube row increased.

  • The present work was conducted to investigate the air-side thermal-hydraulic performance of the brazing fin-tube heat exchanger. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient for a plain and a louvered fin configuration were compared numerically and experimentally. It was found that the heat transfer characteristics for the plain fin were similar to the developing flow in the rectangular channel. The louver fin showed about twice better heat transfer coefficient than the plain fin. Previous empirical correlations presented by Davenport, Sunden and Svantesson, Sahnoun and Webb, Chang and Wang, Achaichia and Cowell, and Kang were compared with the present experimental data.

  • One method of increasing the heat-transfer rate is to increase the heat-transfer area. In this study, we test a wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 1.03, and we compare the results with those of a louver fin-andtube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 0.6. The results obtained show that the heat-transfer capacities of the wide louver samples are larger (16% in one row, 29% in two rows, and 38% in three row samples) than those of the louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 2.17, the increase in the heat-transfer capacity is somewhat small. The reason for this may be due to the smaller heat-transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The effect of the fin pitch on the j and f factors are not profounded. The j and f factors decreased as the number of tube rows increased. We compare the data obtained with existing correlations.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate air-side convective heat transfer characteristics in a compact heat exchanger with circular tubes and continuous plate fins. Simulation results such as air velocity and temperature distributions are presented, and heat transfer coefficients are compared with previous experimental correlations. Three models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, and Reynolds stress are applied for turbulence model applicability. Predicted heat transfer coefficient from the models of standard and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ are very close to those of the heat transfer correlations while there are relatively large difference, more than 17 percentage in the result from the Reynolds stress model. From the calculated results a correlation for Colburn j factor in the compact heat exchanger system is suggested.
