A Study of the Curriculum Courses of Library and Information Career Paths in Korea (사서직 진출분야별 전공교과목 운영방안에 관한 연구)

  • This would be a fundamental research to develop a curriculum for librarians based on their career paths, aiming to achieve a higher level of specialization in educational courses of library and information science in South Korea. The area of career paths is the public librarian, academic librarians and special librarians. In order to adopt the librarians' perspectives, the research analyzed the survey results of librarians regarding the practicability of courses in library and information science. The research also used the existing data on job analysis for different type of libraries for the analysis. In order to adopt educational perspectives, the research analyzed the curriculums for different career paths, which are presented in the websites of the 3 universities in Korea and 6 other oversea universities in the U.S.A and Canada. As the result, career paths for different type of libraries are suggested based on the analysis of the data.

A Study on the Effect of Emotional Labor Experienced by Local Public Library Staffs on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment: The Case of Three Regional Public Libraries in Gyeonggi-do (지자체 공공도서관 직원의 감정노동이 직무만족 및 조직몰입에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 경기도 3개 지역 공공도서관을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated the differences in emotional labor, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment by job type, and the effect of emotional labor on job satisfaction and organizational commitment for public library employees. Using SPSS 27.0, the survey contents were performed frequency analysis, factor analysis, validity analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that the librarianship experienced more emotional labor than non-librarians, and the frequency of emotional labor increased depending on whether or not the civil service was included, and had a negative effect on overall job satisfaction and job condition satisfaction. However, in the case of psychological response to job satisfaction, library data work was found to be high. In terms of user service, emotional labor that occurs in librarians' work has two sides, which can have both positive and negative effects on the librarian's job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Therefore, practical measures to reduce the frequency and emotional dissonance of emotional labor and increase the diversity of emotional labor should be included in the user response manual and future mental health promotion program development.

Substance and Solution of Crisis in Korea's Public Libraries (국내 공공도서관 위기의 실체와 해법)

  • For over 60 years, public libraries in Korea has made an essential contribution to the social, educational, cultural well-being of local communities throughout the country. In spite of these contributions, the public library is regarded as being in crisis. If the current crisis is serious situation, the library and librarian should seek ways to overcome the such crisis. The aim of the paper is to analyse the various factors of the current crisis through an fish-bone diagram and to suggest the solutions to overcome the crisis.

A Study of the Evaluation Indicators in Korean Public Libraries (우리나라 공공도서관에 대한 평가지표 연구)

  • This study is a nationwide survey of Korean public libraries to identify and analyze the usefulness of 69 evaluation indicators of a public library proposed by the authors in the previous paper. A random sample of respondents including library managers, librarians, and users rated the usefulness of each indicator in assessing the performance of a public library. The results of this study could be used as the basic data in the evaluation of public libraries by selecting appropriate indicators and giving weight on each indicator according to the specific evaluation purpose.

Librarians' Experience of Occupational Socialization: A Phenomenological Study (사서의 직업사회화 경험 - 현상학적 연구 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify and understand the meaning and structure of librarians' experience of occupational socialization. Two in-depth interviews were conducted with each of the sixteen participants, practiced above 5 years in libraries and selected by theoretical sampling. Colaizzi's method of phenomenological interpretation was used to arrive at themes that represent what the experience of being a librarian meant to participants. Five thematic categories emerged from the data: 1) growing through deepening work and extending ability, 2) adapting the organization culture, 3) come to maturity along with users, 3) having double consciousness of the profession, 4) seeking self-realization as a librarian. Thus, librarians' experience means to orient toward the becoming a librarian with the professional situated the practice, and is the process librarian concretizes and realizes the ideal type of librarianship in the practice through adjustable interactive-process with environments.

An Analysis of the Policy Making Process of Contracting-out of Public Library Appeared in Municipal Ordinance on the Establishment and Operation of Cultural Foundation: Based on the Advocacy Coalition Framework (A시 B구 문화재단 설립 및 운영 조례에 대한 정책결정과정 분석 - 정책옹호연합모형(ACF)을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the movements of policy actors in the policy process of the establishment of a local cultural foundation in B-gu(district), A-si (city), then to explore the way to contract out of the management of public libraries to the cultural foundation in the policy process. Data for the study were collected from various sources from newspapers and assembly minutes to blogs and SNS messages of the policy actors, then analysed based on Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF). The results showed that 'agreement of contract-out' coalition only accepted public interest of the public libraries between the public interest and specialty of librarianship which were insisted by 'disagreement of contract-out' coalition's policy beliefs. The comparison between this case and a similar policy case showed that the specialty of librarianship as a core belief is effective in changing the beliefs of other coalition. Eventually, it is required to differentiate and to specialize library services among public services in a local area in order to keep the direct management of public libraries by the local government, and this means that everyday library services influence the decision making of library policies in the local area.

A Critical Study of Library Outsourcing in Korea (도서관의 아웃소싱에 대한 비판적 연구)

  • Outsourcing has been around a long time in libraries. Card catalogs of LC, and approvalplans, subscription agents and binding of journal are all forms of outsourcing that librarieshave come to accept as normal procedures. Nevertheless. outsourcing is one of the mostcontroversial topics discussed in library management today. It carries meanings ranging fromtraditionally outsourced activities to more recent outsourcing of entire functions anddepartments. This study will provide background and context for the issue of outsourcing.suggest several useful guidelines for the entities of library outsourcing in Korea. One of thecommon rationales for outsourcing is that the activity being outsourced is a "noncore"functions to the mission of the libraries. The best approach to outsourcing is probably a'middle-ground' objective approache-ground' objective approach.

Analysis and Alternative of Classification Errors in Public Libraries (공공도서관 분류오류의 실증적 분석과 대안)

  • Libraries have long experience of applying classification schemes to resources - chiefly books. The ultimate goals of classification are systematic shelving of books and ease of user's access. In order to achieve these goals, books about a particular field of knowledge should be shelved together and near each other. If not so, it is classification error. The focus of this study is, therefore, on analysing the classification error in Korea public libraries and suggesting some alternatives.

A Study on the Operation Status of Specialized Public Libraries (특화도서관 운영현황에 관한 연구)

  • This study identified the current status and degree of awareness of specialized libraries through a survey of public library employees in relation to specialized library projects supported and promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and local governments and sought policy directions to revitalize specialized libraries in the future. As a result of the analysis, local (region) was the most common specialized topic, but there were many places that selected topics according to the interest of policymakers. In the case of the data, less than 5% of the total books are specialized, and specialized subject-related programs account for more than 20% of the total library programs, providing an average of three to four programs, and operating personnel generally do not deploy dedicated librarians. When specialized topics meet regional characteristics, when there are separate buildings or specialized rooms, there are two to three dedicated librarians, at least 15% of specialized books, and more than five to six programs, the user's awareness and satisfaction were higher. In order to revitalize specialized libraries, it is necessary to secure additional books, organize differentiated programs, arrange exclusive librarians, provide subject-specialized education through the Korea Library Association and regional representative libraries, develop and distribute specialized and target service manuals, and secure a sufficient budget.

A Discourse Analysis to Public Library Ecosystem in Korea (국내 공공도서관 생태계의 담론적 분석)

  • The goal of this study is to suggest various improvements and expanding strategies of the public library ecosystem. For this goal, researcher reviewed and analyzed the realistic landscapes and social recognitions about the public library ecosystem as local public goods, and discoursed the basic principles and structural terrain of public library ecosystem based on natural ecosystem. As a result, researcher proposed multifaceted alternatives (ensure library's identity and publicity applying Law of Karma, strengthen librarian's professionalism on the premise of overcoming the Minerva's syndrome, optimize the library service and collection management based on the Pareto principle, reduce reading room and differentiated program through resolution of Halo effect, eliminate usage bias by life cycle based on the Gauss distribution, acceptance of the digital paradigm and use-friendly spatialization that ruminates the Icarus paradox, incorporate small library into public library system through a clear understanding of the Gresham's law, and enforce communication and spread social and cultural value through the practice of the Pompeii paradox).
