  • The National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (NAS) operates in-house long-range climate forecasting system to support the agricultural use of climate forecast data. This system, developed through collaborative research with Pusan National University, is based on the PNU/RDA Coupled General Circulation Model (CGCM) and includes the regional climate model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting). It generates detailed climate forecast data for periods ranging from 1 to 6 months, covering 20 key variables such as daily maximum, minimum, and average temperatures, precipitation, and agricultural meteorological elements like solar radiation, soil moisture, and ground temperature-factors essential for agricultural forecasting. The data are provided at a daily temporal resolution with a spatial resolution of a 5km grid, which can be used in point form (interpolated) or averaged across administrative regions. The system's seasonal temperature and precipitation forecasts align closely with observed climatological data, accurately reflecting spatial and topographical influences, confirming its reliability. These long-range forecasts from NAS are expected to offer valuable insights for agricultural planning and decision-making. The detailed forecast data can be accessed through the Climate Change Assessment Division of NAS.

  • The bioreactor method, in which leachate is reinjected into a landfill for rapid decomposition and stabilization of buried waste, is being applied and tested at many landfills because of its numerous advantages. To apply the bioreactor method to a landfill successfully, it is very important to understand the behavioral characteristics of the injected leachate. In this study, electrical resistivity monitoring was performed to estimate the behavior of a landfill leachate in Korea where the bioreactor method was applied. For the electrical resistivity monitoring, a baseline survey was conducted in August 2013 before the leachate was injected, and time-lapse monitoring surveys were conducted four times after injection. The electrical resistivity monitoring results revealed reductions in electrical resistivity in the landfill attributable to the injected leachate, and the change in its characteristics over time was confirmed. In addition, by newly defining the electrical resistivity change ratio and applying it in this study, the spatial distribution and behavior of the leachate over time were effectively identified. More research on optimization of data acquisition and integrated monitoring methods using various techniques should be conducted in the near future.

  • Since the release of Meta's Segment Anything Model (SAM), a large-scale vision transformer generation model with rapid image segmentation capabilities, several studies have been conducted to apply this technology in various fields. In this study, we aimed to investigate the applicability of SAM for water bodies detection and extraction using the QGIS Geo-SAM plugin, which enables the use of SAM with satellite imagery. The experimental data consisted of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500)-1 images. The results obtained by applying SAM to these data were compared with manually digitized water objects, Open Street Map (OSM), and water body data from the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII)-based hydrological digital map. The mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) calculated for all features extracted using SAM and these three-comparison data were 0.7490, 0.5905, and 0.4921, respectively. For features commonly appeared or extracted in all datasets, the results were 0.9189, 0.8779, and 0.7715, respectively. Based on analysis of the spatial consistency between SAM results and other comparison data, SAM showed limitations in detecting small-scale or poorly defined streams but provided meaningful segmentation results for water body classification.

  • The Image Signal Processor (ISP) converts RAW images captured by the camera sensor into user-preferred sRGB images. While RAW images contain more meaningful information for image processing than sRGB images, RAW images are rarely shared due to their large sizes. Moreover, the actual ISP process of a camera is not disclosed, making it difficult to model the inverse process. Consequently, research on learning the conversion between sRGB and RAW has been conducted. Recently, the ParamISP[1] model, which directly incorporates camera parameters (exposure time, sensitivity, aperture size, and focal length) to mimic the operations of a real camera ISP, has been proposed by advancing the simple network structures. However, existing studies, including ParamISP[1], have limitations in modeling the camera ISP as they do not consider the degradation caused by lens shading, optical aberration, and lens distortion, which limits the restoration performance. This study introduces Positional Encoding to enable the camera ISP neural network to better handle degradations caused by lens. The proposed positional encoding method is suitable for camera ISP neural networks that learn by dividing the image into patches. By reflecting the spatial context of the image, it allows for more precise image restoration compared to existing models.

  • Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) enables rapid data acquisition over extensive areas, but interpreting the obtained data requires specialized knowledge. Numerous studies have utilized numerical analysis methods to examine GPR signal characteristics under various conditions. To develop more realistic numerical models, the heterogeneous nature of the ground, which causes clutter, must be considered. Clutter refers to signals reflected by objects other than the target. The Peplinski material model and fractal techniques can simulate these heterogeneous characteristics, yet there is a shortage of research on the necessary input parameters. Moreover, methods for quantitatively evaluating the similarity between field and analytical data are not well established. In this study, we calculated the autocorrelation coefficient of field data and determined the correlation length using the autocorrelation function. The correlation length represented the temporal or spatial distance over which data exhibited similarity. By comparing the correlation length of field data with that of the numerical model incorporating fractal weights, we quantitatively evaluated a numerical model for heterogeneous ground. Consequently, the results of this study demonstrated a numerical modeling technique that reflected the clutter characteristics of the field through correlation length.

  • Ground improvement techniques through soil densification are widely used to enhance the cyclic resistance and seismic performance of liquefiable soils. However, most studies have primarily focused on the increase in soil strength before and after ground improvement, with limited investigation into changes in spatial statistical characteristics. This study aims to identify the changes in soil strength and spatial variability due to ground improvement by analyzing data from 19 cases where ground improvement was conducted using timber piles, aggregate piers, and dynamic compaction, with a cone penetration test (CPT) performed pre- and post-improvement. The changes in cone tip resistance were evaluated by comparing cone tip resistance profiles before and after ground improvement, while changes in spatial variability were assessed by examining variations in three parameters of the random field: mean (or trend function), variance, and scale of fluctuation. The results indicate that cone tip resistance generally increased, while inherent variability tended to decrease. The scale of fluctuation, representing spatial autocorrelation, generally increased following ground improvement, with higher initial fluctuation parameters correlating with a greater rate of increase. Furthermore, the probabilistic analysis of liquefaction-induced settlement revealed that changes in the scale of fluctuation due to ground improvement significantly influenced the variability of settlement, underscoring the importance of considering this factor.

  • This study is to investigate and analyze regional patterns of aging in Taejeon Metropolitan city-the overpopulated area of Choong-Cheong Province-by cohort analysis method. According to the population structure transition caused by rapid social and economic changes, Korea has made a rapid progress in population aging since 1970. This trend is so rapid that we should prepare for and cope with aging society. It is not only slow to cope with it in our society, but also there are few studies on population aging of the geographical field in Korea. The data of this study are the reports of Population and Housing Censuses in 1975 and 1985 and General Population and Housing Censuses with 10% sample survey in 1995 taken by National Statistical Office. The research method is to sample as the aging district the area with high aged population rate where the populations over 60 reside among total population during the years of 1975, 1985, 1995 and to sample the special districts of decreasing population where the population decreases very much and the special districts of increasing population in which the population increases greatly, presuming that the reason why aged population rate increases is that non-elderly population high in mobility moves out. It is then verified and ascertained whether it is true or not with cohort analysis method by age. Finally regional patterns in the city are found through the classification and modeling by type based on the aging district, the special districts of decreasing population, and the special districts of increasing population. The characteristics of the regional patterns show that there is social population transition and that non-elderly population moves out. The aging district with the high aged population rate is divided into high-level keeping-up type, relative falling type below the average of Taejeon city in aging progress, and relative rising type above the average of the city. This district can be found at both the central area of the city and the suburbs because Taejeon city has the characteristic of over-bounded city. But it cannot be found at the new built-up area with the in-migration of large population. The special districts of decreasing population where the population continues to decrease can be said to be the population doughnuts found at the CBD and its neighboring inner area. On the other hand, the special districts of increasing population where the population continues to increase are located at the new built-up area of the northern part in Taejeon city. The special districts of decreasing population are overlapping with the aging district and higher in aged population rate by the out-migration of non-elderly population. The special districts of increasing population are not overlapping with the aging district and lower in aged population rate by the in-migration of non-elderly population. To clarify the distribution map of the aging district, the special districts of decreasing and increasing population and the aging district are divided into four groups such as the special districts of decreasing population group-the same one as the aging district, the special districts of decreasing population group, the special districts of increasing population group, and the other district. With the cohort analysis method by age used to investigate the definite increase and decrease of aging population through population transition of each group, it is found that the progress of population aging is closely related to the social population fluctuation, especially that aged population rate is higher with the out-migration of non-elderly population. This is to explain each model of CBD, inner area, and the suburbs after modeling the aging district, the special districts of decreasing population, and the special districts of increasing population in Taejeon city. On the assumption that the city area is a concentric circle, it is possible to divide it into three areas such as CBD(A), the inner area(B), and the suburbs(C). The special districts of increasing and decreasing population in the city are divided into three districts-the special districts of decreasing population(a), the special districts of increasing population(b), and the others(c). The aging district of this city is divided into the aging district($\alpha$) and the others($\beta$). And then modeling these districts, it is probable to find regional patterns in the city. $Aa{\alpha}$ and $Ac{\beta}$ patterns are found in the CBD, in which $Aa{\alpha}$ is the special district of decreasing population and is higher in aged population rate because of aged population low in mobility staying behind and out-migration of non-elderly population. $Ba{\alpha}$, $Ba{\beta}$, $Bb{\beta}$, and $Bc{\beta}$ patterns are found in the inner area, in which neighboring area $Ba{\alpha}$ pattern is located. $Bb{\beta}$ pattern is located at the new developing area of newly built apartment complex. $Cb{\beta}$, $Cc{\alpha}$, and $Cc{\beta}$ patterns are found in the suburbs, among which $Cc{\alpha}$ pattern is highest in population aging. It is likely that the $Cc{\beta}$ under housing land readjustment on a large scale will be the $Cb{\beta}$ pattern. As analyzed above, marriage and out-migration of new family, non-elderly population, with house purchase are main factors in accelerating population aging in the central area of the city. Population aging is responsible for the great increase of aged population with longer life expectancy by the low death rate, the out-migration of non-elderly population, and the age group of new aged population in the suburbs. It is necessary to investigate and analyze the regional patterns of population aging at the time when population problems caused by aging as well as longer life expectancy are now on the increase. I hope that this will help the future study on population aging of the geographical field in Korea. As in the future population aging will be a major problem in our society, local autonomy should make a plan for the problem to the extent that population aging progresses by regional groups and inevitably prepare for it.

  • Effect of soil salinity variation on the growth of barley, rye and oat was studied at the Hwaong, Iweon and Yeongsangang reclaimed lands in the western seaside of Korea. Soil salinity variation and soil EC were very high for crops to be killed or to be brought serious growth retardation during the growing season at the Iweon and Hwaong reclaimed lands, but fully low not to bring growth retardation at the Yeongsangang reclaimed land. Relation between soil salinity and crop growth and yield was well expressed as logarithmic function. Surface soil EC to reach at 50% of seed-emergence reduction was estimated $6.5dS\;m^{-1}$ for barley and $5.1dS\;m^{-1}$ for rye and oat by logarithmic function. In addition, surface soil EC to reach at 50% of grain yield reduction to the best growth in the experimental site was estimated $5.6dS\;m^{-1}$ for barley, $5.8dS\;m^{-1}$ for rye and $5.7dS\;m^{-1}$ for oat, while soil EC to reach at 50% of dry matter reduction was estimated $5.5dS\;m^{-1}$ for barley, $6.2dS\;m^{-1}$ for rye and $5.8dS\;m^{-1}$ for oat by logarithmic function. Grain yield of barley, rye and oat was 395, 164 and $325kg\;10a^{-1}$ in the Yeongsangang reclaimed lands naturally controlled below condition of $6dS\;m^{-1}$ of soil EC, but no harvest was obtained in the Hwaong and Iweon reclaimed land because of high salinity more than $15dS\;m^{-1}$ in maximum soil EC during growing period. Consequentially, it was concluded that soil salinity must be controlled below $6dS\;m^{-1}$ for good growth and high yield of winter barley, rye and oat in the reclaimed land in Korea.

  • In this study, we developed a technique of applying DRASTIC, which is the most widely used tool for estimation of groundwater vulnerability to the aqueous phase contaminant infiltrated from the surface, and a groundwater flow model jointly to assess groundwater contamination potential. The developed technique is then applied to Buyeo-eup area in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. The input thematic data of a depth to water required in DRASTIC model is known to be the most sensitive to the output while only a few observations at a few time schedules are generally available. To overcome this practical shortcoming, both steady-state and transient groundwater level distributions are simulated using a finite difference numerical model, MODFLOW. In the application for the assessment of groundwater vulnerability, it is found that the vulnerability results from the numerical simulation of a groundwater level is much more practical compared to cokriging methods. Those advantages are, first, the results from the simulation enable a practitioner to see the temporally comprehensive vulnerabilities. The second merit of the technique is that the method considers wide variety of engaging data such as field-observed hydrogeologic parameters as well as geographic relief. The depth to water generated through geostatistical methods in the conventional method is unable to incorporate temporally variable data, that is, the seasonal variation of a recharge rate. As a result, we found that the vulnerability out of both the geostatistical method and the steady-state groundwater flow simulation are in similar patterns. By applying the transient simulation results to DRASTIC model, we also found that the vulnerability shows sharp seasonal variation due to the change of groundwater recharge. The change of the vulnerability is found to be most peculiar during summer with the highest recharge rate and winter with the lowest. Our research indicates that numerical modeling can be a useful tool for temporal as well as spatial interpolation of the depth to water when the number of the observed data is inadequate for the vulnerability assessments through the conventional techniques.
