The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the relationships between tidal cycles, surface landforms, and sediments of tidal flats and their resident life. The study areas are Uengdo Ri in the Garolim Bay with wide the mud flat, Doou Ri in the Youngwang tidal flat which is developed sand flat and salt field, and Gomso Bay which is developed aquaculture industry. For resident around tidal flats, sea working takes precedence over farming, and main earnings gets from tidal flats. Resident life around the tidal flats is deeply related to tidal cycles, and low water level of spring tide becomes, they are most active and get more earnings than usual day, so it seems to be periodic markets. It is usually developed shellfish aquafarms in the mud flat, the stow net fishery in the sand flat, and salt fields in the mixed flat near the coast. Also a tidal flat has specialization of economic activity, and is divided into salt field and fish-farming in the supratidal zone, shellfish aquafarm in the intertidal zone, and oyster and porphyra culture in the subtidal zone.
This study was carried out in August and September 2016 to investigate the species composition and biomass of benthic diatoms in Yubu Island, Gomso Bay, Imja Island, and Yeoja Bay tidal flat of Southwestern coast. There were 181 species of 48 genera in Yubu Island tidal flats, 194 species of 51 genera in Gomso Bay tidal flats, 224 species of 64 genera in Imja Island tidal flats and 188 species of 56 genera in Yeoja Bay tidal flats. A total of 274 species of 70 genera appeared. Pennales appeared more widely than Centrales and were dominated by Paralia sulcata and Navicula spp. Biomass of Yubu Island tidal flat ranged from $18.8-136.1mg\;m^{-2}$, $31.9-215.7mg\;m^{-2}$ in Gomso Bay, $2.9-120.2mg\;m^{-2}$ in Imja Island and $10.1-147.7mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yeoja Bay. The range of total biomass from 4 areas was $2.9-215.7mg\;m^{-2}$. The concentration of phaeopigment and degradation product of chlorophyll-a was $1.7-470.8mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yubu Island tidal flat, $52.3-277.2mg\;m^{-2}$ in Gomso Bay, $0.6-78.9mg\;m^{-2}$ in Imja Island and $39.1-346.3mg\;m^{-2}$ in Yeoja Bay. Compared with the results reported in this study area and the domestic tidal flats, it cannot be directly compared and evaluated due to various factors such as the timing of the survey, the frequency of the survey, the analysis method and geography. The southwestern coast of Korea has a variety of benthic diatoms and the high concentration of chlorophyll-a is the main determinant of primary productivity.

The seafloor topography of Gomso Bay on the west coast of Korea was investigated using subtidal bathymetry and tidal-flat altimetry. Gomso Bay consists of 80% tidal flats and 20% subtidal zone, and is divided into an outer bay and an inner bay by the Jujincheon esturary channel. The outer bay tidal flat, has few tidal channels, has a concave topographic profile, and is characterized by the development of chenier and intertidal sand bars, giving it the appearance of gently sloping, dissipative beaches. The inner bay tidal flat has wide upper and middle tidal flats with a well-developed tidal channel system without cheniers. Moreover, the topographical cross-section between these tidal channels is convex upward, and shows the characteristics of a depositional environment greatly influenced by tidal channels and tidal action. An analysis of the horizontal movement of the tidal flat environment over the past 37 years investigating changes in the iso-depth lines in the Gomso-Bay tidal flat between 1981 and 2018 revealed that the Gomso-Bay tidal flat retreated gradually landward. As a result of analyzing the erosion and sedimentation characteristics of Gomso Bay, assuming that most of the water depth changes were due to changes in the elevation of the sea floor and sea level, an average of 1 cm (0 mm/y) of sediment was eroded in the outer bay over the past 37 years (1981-2018), In the inner bay, an average of 50 cm (14 mm/y) was deposited. Notably, the high tidal flats of the outer bay were largely eroded. Monitoring photographs of the coast showed that most of the erosion of the high tidal flats in the outer bay occurred in a short period around 1999 (probably 1997-2002), and that the erosion resulted from the erosion of sand dunes and high-tide beaches caused by temporarily greatly raised high tide levels and storms.

It is important to understand interactions in the sediment-water environment because nitrate (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrient fluxes released into overlying water can represent a significant fraction of the total nutrient requirement for primary productivity. In this study, we analyzed and estimated benthic nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface, investigating environmental conditions in Gomso and Geunso Bays. Also, we compared previously reported nutrient flux data to identify regional differences. As a result, benthic nutrient fluxes in Beopsan were DIN: $6.14mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and DIP: $0.32mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ higher than other survey sites. Sediment COD were $4.0-10.8mg/g{\cdot}dry$, and environmental deterioration was observed due to organic pollution. If no solution is found for tidal flat farm management, problems such as a decrease in aquaculture production will follow. Therefore, long-term monitoring of tidal flat environments should be pursued to enable the sustainable use of biological resources.

To estimate the nitrogen budget and assess the purification function of a tidal flat ecosystem, a field survey was carried out at Hajeon tidal flat in Gomso Bay, the southern part of Byeonsan Peninsula, Chollabuk-do, Korea. A study area of 3.0$\times$4.5 ㎢ was established on the tidal flat and the concentrations of chlorophyll-a, DIN, DON, and TN were measured in the water column during the period of April 17-18, 1999: From the budget analysis, the loss rate of Chl-a was estimated to be -0.05 mg Chl/㎡/hr, which is approximately 7% of that at Issiki tidal flat in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The lower loss rate of Chl-a in the study area was attributable to the lower standing crop of phytoplankton, the lower temperature that may reduce metabolic rates of biotic components and the lower biomass of macrobenthos in the study area. Over the 13.5 ㎢ of study area, Hajeon tidal flat removed 8.36$\times$10$\^$2/ kg N/day of TN, 5.36$\times$10$\^$3/ kg N/day of PON and 1.62$\times$10$\^$2/ kg N/day of phytoplankton-related PON, showing that the tidal flats may play an important role in removing nitrogen in coastal waters. The removal rate of PON, compared to the removal cost of the existing waste water treatment facilities, indicates that the economic value of the purification function of Hajeon tidal flat (13.5㎢) may be more than that of two large facilities.

Recently, Gomso Bay saw a decrease in the production of manila clam, which accounted for 17.8 % of production across the whole country in 2015, while Geunso Bay saw an increase that raised its contribution to 49.1 %. The tidal flats in these bays are inhabited by various benthos, and material flows in and out according to the tide. It is essential to understand the mass balance of these regions while giving consideration to the characteristics of these tidal flats. In this study, we compared areas where aquaculture farms were located in Gomso Bay with those without from May to August 2015. We divided the region into three sea areas (Sector I, Sector II, and Control), and the mass balance was estimated using the LOICZ model. As a result, the DIP of Sector II in Gomso Bay and another region in Geunso Bay, where a manila clam farm was located, were found to be -207.2 kg/day and 77.2 kg/day. The DIN was -4,996.7 kg/day and 926.6 kg/day. These results suggest that Gomso Bay han a higher density than Geunso Bay, which is thought to be mainly due to the feeding action of organisms. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy tidal flat ecosystem and to sustain the production of manila clams, sustainable management to reduce the high density of tidal flat farms is necessary.
In this study, DEMs (Digital elevation model) based on LIDAR, TanDEM-X and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are used to analyze topographic change of Gomso tidal flat during a few years. DEM from LIDAR data was observed at 2011 by KHOA (Korean hydrographic and oceanographic agency) and DEM based on TanDEM-X data was generated at Lee and Ryu (2017). UAV data was observed at KM and KH area of Gomso tidal flat. KM area was surveyed at MAY and AUG 2019, and KH area was surveyed at APR 2018 and MAY 2019. During research period, 2011 to AUG 2019, elevation of KM area is decreased 0.24 m in average, and Chenier is retreat to landward about 130 m. In KH area, elevation is increased 0.16 m in average during research period, 2011 to MAY 2019. It is expected that multi-platform remotely sensed data can help to study accurate topographic change of tidal flat.

To compare monthly variations of phytoplankton biomass and community composition between in seawater and sediment of the Gomso Bay (tidal flat: approximately 75%), the photosynthetic pigments were analyzed by HPLC every month in 1999 and every two months in 2000. Ambient physical and chemical parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and chemical oxygen demand) were also examined to find the environmental factors controlling structure of phytoplankton community. The temporal and spatial variations of chlorophyll a concentration in seawater were correlated well with the magnitude of freshwater discharge from land. The biomass of microphytobenthos at the surface sediments was lower than that in other regions of the world and 2-3 times lower than phytoplankton biomass integrated in the seawater column. Based on the results of HPLC pigment analysis, fucoxanthin, a marker pigment of diatoms, was the most prominent pigment and highly correlated with chlorophyll a in seawater and sediment of the Gomso Bay. These results suggest that diatoms are the predominant phytoplankton in seawater and sediment of the Gomso Bay. However, the monthly variation of chlorophyll a concentration in seawater at the subtidal zone was not a good correlation with that in sediment of the Gomso Bay. Although pelagic plankton was identified in seawater by microscopic examination, benthic algal species were not found in the seawater. These results suggest that contribution from the suspended microphytobenthos in the tidal flat to the subtidal zone of the Gomso Bay may be low as a food source to the primary consumer in the upper water column of the subtidal zone. Further study needs to elucidate the vertical and horizontal transport magnitude of the suspended microphytobenthos in the tidal flat to the subtidal zone.
The growth of manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum inhabiting culturing ground was studied in west coast Gomso tidal flat of Korea, from August 2000 to July 2001. The density of the clam was the highest in November 2000, showing a monotonic decrease afterwards over the study period. Mean density was $1,224ind./m^2$ during the study period. Size frequencies of the clam showed a unimodal distribution, and its mode increased with shell growth over time. Although the growth of shell length of manila clam was monotonic, the growth rates decreased between July 2001 and February 2002 and increased from March 2002. The biomass of the clam also increased with time, in which the increments becoming larger since March 2002. The clam shell length had linear relationship to shell height, and had logarithmic relationship to total weight, meat wet weight, dry meat weight, and AFDW. Condition index of the clam increased continuously until April, decreasing afterwards in 2001. The pattern was similar in 2002. Based on fluctuations in condition index, the spawning time of manila clam in Gomso tidal flat is inferred to be between May and October. These results suggested that optimal harvests can be made before summer season when growth decreased and mass mortality occurred, after 24 months of seed shell release.

We measured the fluxes of COD, TN and 55 in addition to composition and quality of sediment in Komso Bay, West Coast of Korea. The fluxes of TN, SS and COD were measured during flood tide and ebb tide in April and August, 2000. Denitrification rates in the sediments was also measured by direct produced $N_2$ gas technique on April and August from 1999 to 2000 in the same sea area. The composition of the sediments were 0.33~5.67 % of sand, 20.2~25.6 of gravel and 68.7~77.0 % of silt. Ignition loss of the sediments were 6.58~7.50 %. The concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the sediments were 0.028~0.326 mg/gㆍdry and oxidation reduction potential of the sediments were -28~-15 mV Diurnal fluxes of COD, total nitrogen, and suspended solids with tidal current and denitrification rate in the tidal flat have been determined in Komso Bay The diurnal net flux of COD was same in April. While 14.4 ton COD/hr of net influx into the tidal flat was recorded in August. The diurnal net influx of total nitrogen was 0.16 ton N/hr in April and 1.13 ton N/hr in August. The diurnal net influx of suspended solids was 0.05 ton SS/hr in April, and also net influx of suspended solids was 0.29 ton SS/hr in August. The overall purification ability of the tidal flat were estimated 0.00~5.69 g COD/$m^2/day$, 0.06~0.45 g N/m²/day and 0.02~0.12 g SS/$m^2/day$ for COD, TN and SS, respectively. Denitrification rate was 0.009~1.720 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$ (average 0.702 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$) in April and 0.033~0.133 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$ (average 0.077 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$) in August, 1999. 0.000~l.909 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$ (average 0.756 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$) in April, 0.000~1.691 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$ (average 0.392 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$) in August, 2000. Even with a wide range of denitrification rate depending on the sampling location and studied periods, the average denitrification rate was estimated 0.482 m mole ${N_2}/m^2/day$ in the tidal flat of Komso Bay.
