  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different maturity scores [2 (bull), 2 (steer), 3-9 (cow)] and the number of extractions on water extract from Hanwoo shank bones (arm, fore shank, round and hind shank) with regard to sensory traits (white color, aroma, taste, overall acceptability). The white color of water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of maturity score 2 (bull and steer) was lighter than with maturity scores of 3-9 (cow) (p<0.05). The aroma of water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of maturity score 2 (bull and steer) was stronger than with other maturity scores 3-9 (cow) except for maturity score 5 (p<0.05). The taste and overall acceptability of water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of maturity score 2 (bull and steer) were higher than with maturity scores of 3-9 (cow) (p<0.05). The white color, aroma, taste and overall acceptability of water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of all maturity scores significantly decreased as the number of extractions (from 2nd to 4th) increased (p<0.05). In conclusion, there were significant differences between maturity scores 2 and maturity scores 3-9 (cow) with regard to sensory traits. Further studies need to address whether different maturity scores affect the price of shank bones in the meat industry.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of maturity scores [2 (bull), 2 (steer), 3-9 (cow)] and the number of extractions (up to 4 times) on the chemical properties of water extract from Hanwoo shank bones (arm, fore shank, round and hind shank). The turbidity, meat color (CIE L value), collagen, protein, caloric and chondroitin sulfate contents of samples were observed. The turbidity and lightness were higher for water extract of Hanwoo shank bones with a maturity score of 2 (bull and steer) than maturity scores of 3-9 (cow) (p<0.05). The turbidity and lightness of water extract from shank bones of all Hanwoo maturity scores significantly increased with the 1st and 2nd extractions, but significantly decreased with 3rd and 4th extractions (p<0.05). The collagen and protein contents were highest for water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of maturity score 2 (bull and steer) (p<0.05). The caloric and chondroitin sulfate contents were higher for water extract from Hanwoo shank bones of maturity score 2 (bull and steer) than maturity scores of 3-9 (cow) (p<0.05). As the number of extractions increased, the chondroitin sulfate content significantly decreased (p<0.05). Based on these results, differences correlating with maturity scores were found only with collagen and protein contents. Therefore, further studies should be considered to address whether different maturity scores affect the price of shank bones in the meat industry.

  • According to Teed, the first report of oseoma in the literature was by Veiga in 1586. There was no satisfactory explanation of its etiology. True osteomas may occur in the mastoid and temporal bone, but they are relatively rare. These tumors are benign, slow growing and composed predominantly of mature bone. Treatment is indicated for symptomatic osteoma. The authors experienced a case of osteoma of the temporal bone which had revealed a progressive posterior auriular swelling, obstructed bony ear canal, chronic ear discharge and hearing loss for about 18 yrs in right side.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate factors influencing the upper airway dimensions in skeletal Class II children and adolescents. In total, 67 patients were selected. Airway volume and minimal cross-sectional area were three-dimensionally assessed. Craniofacial morphology and skeletal maturity were assessed on generated two-dimensional cephalograms. The measurements were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Upper airway dimensions were significantly smaller in pre-peak stage group, and positively associated with age. Anterior facial height and age were the most relevant factors for airway volume. Mandibular width and age were the most relevant factors for minimal cross-sectional area. Upper airway dimensions were significantly associated with age, skeletal maturity and craniofacial morphology in all three planes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the stages of calcification of various teeth and skeletal maturity stages among Korean individuals. The study subjects consisted 154 female and 179 male ranging from 7 years to 16 years of age. A total of 333 hand-wrist, cephalo-lateral and panoramic radiographs were obtained and analyzed. The tooth development of the mandibular canines, first, second premolars, and second molars were assessed according to the Dermijian's system. Skeletal maturity stages were determined from hand-wrist radiographs by using the SMI system and cephalo-lateral radiographs by using the CVMS, respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The mean ages of each stage of skeletal maturity were consistently younger in female subjects. 2. There was a high correlation between skeletal maturity of hand-wrist and cervical vertebrae in the both sexes. 3. There was a high correlation between skeletal maturity and dental calcification stage of mandibular canines, first premolar, second premolars, and second molar. 4. The mandibular second molar was tooth showing the highest correlation. 5. Percent distributions of the relationship between calcification stages of individual teeth and stages of skeletal maturity were obtained in both sexes. In summary, this suggests that tooth calcification stages from panoramic radiographs might be clinically useful as a maturity indicator of the pubertal growth period.

  • A bone island represents a focus of mature compact bone within the cancellous bone. It can be diagnosed based on characteristic clinical and radiologic features. The lesion is typically asymptomatic with a preference for the pelvis, femur, and other long bones. On the radiologic study, the lesion appears as an ovoid, round, or oblong homogeneously dense and sclerotic focus in the cancellous bone. Characteristic feature of this lesion is radiating bony streaks, known as "thorny radiations" or "pseudopodia". Most bone islands are small, and majority of the lesions measure from 0.1 to 2.0 cm. Giant bone island, defined as a diameter greater than 2 cm, has been rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of giant bone island measured by 10${\times}$1.7${\times}$1 cm in the diaphysis of right tibia in 31-year-old man.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a high fructose and fat diet on bone growth and maturation in growing female rats. Methods: Three-week-old female SD rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups; the control group (CON: fed control diet based on AIN-93G, n = 8); the high-fructose diet group (HFrc: fed control diet with 30% fructose, n = 8); the high-fat diet group (Hfat: fed control diet with 45 kcal% fat, n = 8); and the high-fat diet plus high fructose group (HFrc + HFat: fed diets 45 kcal% fat with 30% fructose, n = 8). Each group was assigned their respective diets for the remaining eight weeks. Bone-related parameters (bone mineral density (BMD) and structural parameters, osteocalcin (OC), deoxypyridinoline (DPD)) and morphologic changes of kidney were analyzed at the end of the experiment. Results: Final body weights and weight gain were higher in the HFat and HFrc + HFat groups and showed higher tendency in the HFrc group compared with those of the CON group (p < 0.05); however, no significant difference in caloric intake was observed among the four experimental groups. The serum OC levels of the HFrc and HFrc + HFat groups were lower than those of the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). Urinary levels of DPD did not differ among the experimental groups. BV/TV and Tb.N of trabecular bone were higher in the HFrc + HFat group and showed a higher tendency in the HFrc group than those of the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). Tb.Pf of trabecular bone were lower in the HFrc + HFat group than those in the CON and HFat groups (p < 0.05). However, no difference in trabecular BMD was observed among the experimental groups. Cortical bone volume was higher in the HFat and HFrc + HFat groups than in the CON and HFrc groups (p < 0.05). No morphology change in kidney was observed among the experimental groups. Conclusion: Our study suggests that 8 weeks of high-fructose and high fat intake could improve the bone quality (Structural parameters) of trabecular and cortical bone of tibia in growing female rats.

  • Among many maturation indicators of growing patients, menarche and skeletal maturity are useful to assess growth and development, and the changes of the first and third finger are relatively important in hand-wrist X-rays. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between menarche and the changes of the phalanx of the first and third finger and compare skeletal maturation among different malocclusion types. The sample used in this study was 29 Class 1,27 Class II and 27 Class III females whose hand-wrist X-rays had been taken with 6 month interval before the appearance of ulnar sesamoid ossification till the phalanges of the fingers were almost fused. The results were as follows. 1. There was no skeletal maturity difference among malocclusion types. 2. There was no difference in the mean chronologic age of menarche among different malocclusion types and that was $12.30\pm0.98$ years. 3. The ulnar sesamoid was observed at $10.35\pm1.01$ years, and on distal phalanx of the first finger, epiphyseal capping appeared at $11.26\pm1.04$ years and fusion at $13.12\pm1.06$ years. The epiphyseal capping on middle phalanx of the third finger was observed at $11.57\pm1.02$ years and fusion at $13.72\pm1.04$ years. 4. The timing of menarche occurred around the same time as the fusion process of distal phalanx of the first finger(p<0.001, r=0.82) and the initiation of fusion of middle phalanx of the third finger(p<0.001, r=0.78). Therefore, we can give the aid when we evaluate the growth and development of growing females seeing the changes at phalanx of the first and third finger.
