This study is to analyze femoral necks and lumbar spine bone mineral density in Korean men aged 60 or older 2,736 people, as well as to research in its relation to anthropometry, life style, diet, fracture history, family history of osteoporosis and medical history using data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES)(the 2nd(2008) and 3rd(2009) year at the 1st survey, and the 1st(2010) year at the 5th survey). To express the strength of the associations, percent differences were calculated from multiple linear regression models using the formula ${\beta}{\times}$(unit/mesnBMD). Unit for continuous variables were chosen to approximate 1 standard deviation(SD). Prevalence of osteoporosis for 60-69, 70-79 and >80 old men were 6.7%, 15.8% and 31.4% respectively. The proportion of osteoporosis calculated for each age group in the femoral neck group was: 60-69 years old, 2.6%, 70-79years old, 8.2%, >80years old, 24.8%. For the lumbar spine group, the values were: 60-69 years old, 5.5%, 70-79years old, 11.3%, >80years old, 15.4%. In men aged 60 or older, lean mass greatly influenced bone density in the femoral neck and lumbar spine. Thus, to increase the lean mass would be an effective way to prevent osteoporosis in elderly men.

Relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and type 2 diabetes is still inconsistent. Recently, many epidemiologic data show that fracture risk is increased in type 2 diabetic patients regardless of BMD status. In this study, we used nation-wide data from 2008 to 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) to analyze the BMD status in patients with type 2 diabetes compared to non-diabetics. We included subjects aged 50 years or older in men (N=2,959, 2,430 without diabetes, 529 with type 2 diabetes) and postmenopausal women (N=2,902, 2,479 without diabetes, 423 with type 2 diabetes). Subjects with history of medication for osteoporosis or with illness or malignancy affecting bone metabolism were excluded. Data of anthropometric measurements and demographic characteristics were collected by trained examiner. Serum was separated from peripheral venous blood samples obtained after 8 hours of fasting. BMD was measured at lumbar spine and femur using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). There was a significant positive association between lumbar spine BMD and type 2 diabetes after adjusting age, gender, body mass index, monthly house income, education level, physical activity, daily calcium intake and vitamin D concentration by multiple regression analysis in all subjects. In the subgroup analysis by gender, this association was maintained both in male and female after adjusting those confounding factors. However, femur BMD was not different between type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. In conclusion, lumbar spine BMD was significantly higher in type 2 diabetic patients aged 50 years or more in men and postmenopausal women compared to non-diabetic subjects.
This study was conducted to investigate Osteoporosis on the effect of dietary factors and past young age period's dairy products consumption on BMD in 170 postmenopausal Korean women without diagnosed disease. Bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar spine was investigated by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Dietary assesment of the subjects were measured by Cognitive Food Frequency Recall method. The measurements of group average were 57.9kg of body weight, 36.73 of BMI(Body Mass Index), 2103.3㎉ of energy, 638.7mg of dietary calcium, 70.3g of protein, and 10.58mg of iron. Nutrient intake levels were similar to or more than the level of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances. Bone Mineral Density(BMD) of Lumbar spine(L2-L4) of group average was 0.912g/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and under 50 yr's 1,02g/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 50~54 yr's 0.92g/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 55~59 yr's 0.85g/$\textrm{cm}^2$, over 60 yr's 0.85g/$\textrm{cm}^2$, had been getting low degree on aging. BMD of the Lumbar spine was positively correlated with calorie, body weight, dietary calcium, protein, phosphorus and serum albumin. Past dairy products consumption experiment was highly significant on BMD in teenage period(R square = 26, p-value 0.0031). Particularly in over 60 yr group, the correlations between BMD and past dairy products consumption in teenage period had shown highly significance(r=0.48, p<0.02). 55~59 yr age group had also positive correlation(R squae = 0.29, p<0.05). This results confirm that the most effective way of preventing osteoporosis and the fractures is to maximize peak bone mass in early life and to minimize bone loss through the balanced intake of Ca and other nutrients and regular physical activity.
This study was based on the data of total mineral content of about 99% at the age of 16-26 years, we aimed at female university students who are important for bone formation in their early 20s. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors of eating habits affecting their bone density and to provide data to prevent osteoporosis which might occur in the future. It was conducted on 100 female university students in their 20s, the bone mineral density according to BMI was measured by DEAX, and the analysis of 10 eating habits items and the results of BMD measurement on their own results in Excel 2010. As a result, the height was $161.08{\pm}4.70cm$, the weight was $52.43{\pm}6.43kg$, and the BMI was $20.22{\pm}2.48$, which correlated with BMD (p<0.05). According to the BMI classification, 20 had low weight and 80 had normal weight, and BMD was $0.20{\pm}0.41$ at normal weight. In the same sex, the mean T-score of the young adult group was $-0.04{\pm}0.99$ compared with the BMD of the young adult group, and the mean Z-score of the same age group was $0.02{\pm}0.93$ (p<0.001). Eating habits affecting bone mineral density were significantly affected by 3 meals per day, 1-3 cups of coffee per day and p<0.05 for Low salt formula intake. 6-9 dairy product intake was also p<0.05 but not significant. Therefore, it is considered that when 20s female students become middle-aged woman, they should have proper eating habits so that osteogenesis can be improved at young age in order to prevent bone disease.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the levels of bone mineral density (BMD) and to explain the factors influencing BMD among female college students in Korea. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 144 college women. Lifestyle factors were determined by self-report questionnaire. Body composition was measured by body composition analyzer and bone mineral density was measured by ultrasound bone densitometry. Data were analyzed using SPSS for windows, version 19.0. Results: The mean BMD at calcaneus site was 0.56$g/cm^2$ (mean T-score=-0.22). The incidence of osteopenia was 21.5%. Factors predicting BMD were menarche age (r=-.22, p=.009) and height (r=-.18, p=.030) with 7% of explained variance. Conclusion: These results suggest that health care professionals need to provide young women with program that is intended to affect their intention toward osteoporosis preventive behavior change.
