The Purpose of this study was to investigate the predictors of relapse in orthodontic treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion in growing patients. A total of 55 patients were studied and all subjects were divided into two groups according to their stability in the post-treatment stage. Of the sample, 33 patients were included in the stable group and the remaining 22 were assigned to the relapse group. Cephalometric data of the pre-treatment stage was taken and compared between the stable and relapse group. The following results were obtained through t-test: 1. This study presented statistical evidence to show that the major skeletal determinant of prognosis in Class III orthodontic treatment was not anteroposterior discrepancy .but vertical discrepancy, especially within the AB-maxillo mandibular triangle. Vertical angular measurements that showed statistically significant differences were AB-MP and ODI(P<0.01) and the vortical ratio measurements were MP-P/AL and PP-P/AL(P<0.05). 2. Relapse tendency increased with the steep occlusal Plane, especially the steep lower occlusal plane. As to occlusal plane, there were statistically significant differences in OP(L)-PP, OP-PP, AB-OP(L) and Wits appraisal(P<0.05). This study claimed that anteroposterior discrepancy was not necessarily the proper criteria to predict relapse. Vertical discrepancy had a significant effect on post-treatment stability.
It has been reported that skeletal relapse and dental change after mandibular setback do occur not only after intermaxillary fixation(IMF) removal but also during IMF The side effects of skeletal relapse during IMF have clinical importance because they can cause many Postoperative orthodontic Problems. Generally, the Prevention of solid union between segments, compensatory tooth movement, anterior openbite, etc. have been cited as the side effects of jaw displacement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal relapse and dental change during IMF. The material consisted of 28 patients who were treated by BSSRO(bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy), wire osteosynthesis, IMF for correction of mandibular prognathism. Through cephalometric analysis, the amount and direction of surgical movement, skeletal relapse and dental change during IMF were measured. The correlation between surgical movement and skeletal relapse, between skeletal relapse and dental changes were evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained; 1. Distal segment was repositioned backward and upward, proximal segment showed clockwise rotation during surgery. 2. During ]m, anterior portion of distal segment was displaced backward and posterior portion was displaced upward. Proximal segment was displaced upward with forward movement of p-Go(gonion of proximal segment). Backward surgical movement of p-GO was significantly correlated with forward displacement of p-Go. 3. Overjet and overbite were not changed during IMF. The compensatory tooth movements during IMF were characterized by retroclination of upper incisors md retroclination, extrusion of lower incisors. These compensatory tooth movements had statistically significant correlation with upward displacement of d-Go (gonion of distal segment).

The clinical cases presented here involve skeletal Class III malocclusion cases treated with maxillary protraction in a relatively short period of time with good results. When used on young patients, satisfactory results were obtained in a short period of time, but even for those with less growth potential remaining, skeletal enhancement was still evident. However, data on the criteria of diagnosis or relapse following maxillary protraction is limited despite the number of studies on the subject. The present study could not include the observations on retention and relapse, and further studies in the future nay include such observations.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the postretention change of class II malocclusion treatment and to examine which factors were related to the relapse. Seventy-eight treated cases were divided into two groups according to the stability of treatment results. Various measurements in pre-treatment and post-treatment lateral cephalograms were evaluated and comparisons were drawn between the stable and relapse group by t-test and correlation analysis. 1. There were only a row differences in the skeletodental relationship in the pre-treatment phase between the stable and the relapse group. 2. Mandibles in the stable group were repositioned mote anteriorly than those in the relapse group. 3. Mandibular incisors were more uprighted to the basal bone and maxillary incisors were less lingualized in the stable group than in the relapse group. 4. Occlusal plane was inclined forward and downward in the relapse group.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the stability of counterclockwise rotation of mandible by sagittal split ramus osteotomy to correct the skeletal Class III malocclusion with anterior open bite. Twenty five skeletal Class III open bite patients(mean age 20.6 years) who were treated by the sagittal split ramus osteotonues with rigid fixation were examined in this study. Cephalometric radiographs were taken for each Patients Preoperative(T1), ewly Postoperative(T2), and late postoperative Period(T3). Mean postoperative period was 8.0 months. Cephalometric analysis was done and data from T1, T2, and T3 were analyzed statistically by Paired t-test and Pearson correlation analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. Mandibular plane angle decreased $2.9^{\circ}$ and mandibular occlusal plane angle related to SN Plane decreased $2.7^{\circ}$ after orthognathic surgery(T2). At 6 months after orthognathic surgery(T3), mandibular plane angle increased $1.0^{\circ}$, but mandibular occlusal plane angle did not changed. 2. The amount of horizontal relapse long time after orthognathic surgery(T3) was 1.6 mm at B point and it was $22\%$ of the total posterior movements. There was no vertical relapse in the anterior facial height. 3. The related factor with horizontal relapse at late postoperative period was mandibular plane angle(p<0.01). The related factors with decreasing posterior facial height were amount of mandibular setback(p<0.01), increasing of mandibular ramus height(p<0.01), and decrease of the mandibular plane angle during operation(p<0.01). 4. There was no relationship between the amount of changes in mandibular occlusal plan angle during operation and the amount of relapse after surgery.
The purpose of this stdudy was to evaluate the effect of maxillary protraction and the relapse of hard and soft tissue after maxillary protraction. For this study 29 patients who were treated with maxillary protractor and labiolingual archwire were selected. Their mean age was 9 years 4 months and mean treatment period was 8.5 months. Lateral cephalograms were taken at pretreatment, immediately after treatment and one to three months after removal of the maxillary protractor. They were traced on skeletodental and soft tissue structures based on Burstone's analysis and analyzed by Quick-Ceph Image Digitizing System(ORTHODONTIC PROCESSING). The mean and standard deviation between pretreatment and posttreatment and between posttreatment and retention period for each cephalometric variable were calculated. Student t-test was used to determine the statistical significance of the changes in each variable. Correlation coefficients between hard tissue and soft tissue were used to determine interrelationship. The results were as follows. 1. After maxillayy protraction, the maxilla and maxillary dentition moved antero-inferiorly, the mandibld and mandibular dentition moved postero-interiorly and palatal plane rotated antero-superiorly by $0.59^{\circ}$. 2. After maxillary protraction, the soft tissue of upper lip moved antero-interiorly with the movement of hard tissue but the antero-posterior position of lower lip was stable in spite of the change of hard tissue. The thickness of upper lip was decreased and that of lower lip was increased after maxillary Protraction. 3. During the retention period, the position of jaws was relatively stable but upper and lower anterior teeth and antero-superiorly rotated palatal plane relapsed to original position. 4. During the retention period, the soft tissue of lips was stable antero-posteriorly and moved mote inferiorly than posttreatment. 5. The correlation coefficients between the postion of upper and lower incisal edge and that position of lips were high, especially in horizontal change.

Purpose: To suggest an accurate diagnosis and treatment of infiltrating intramuscular lipoma by analysis of the clinical, biological, radiological and pathological features. Materials & Methods: 20 patients who treated at our hospital for infiltrating intramuscular lipoma from 1998. to 2001 were selected for this study. Mean age was 45.8 years old. Four were male and eight female. All cases were checked preoperative radiographs, MRI and diagnosed by biopsy. The methods of surgical treatment included excision of tumor and peripheral tissue. We assessed the recurrence by follow up. Results: Tumors located in upper limbs 5 cases, lower limbs 3 cases, abdomen 3 cases, gluteal region 1 case. In preoperative radiographs, infiltrating intramuscular type were 7 cases. In 11 cases, tumors were completely excied with peripheral tissue. 1 cases was incompletely excised because it was very huge mass and infiltrated lung. Encapsulated tumors were 3cases and uncapsulated tumors 9 cases. There were no recurrence excepts 1 case that was infiltrated lung. Conclusion: Infiltrating intramuscular lipoma was wrongly diagnosed as well differentiated liposarcoma. To increase the rate of correct diagnosis, preoperative radiographs, MRI and pathologic diagnosis were performed. Careful wide excision is necessary to prevent the recurrence.
Objective: This study investigated the skeletal and dentoalveolar changes after intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth using miniscrew implants during the treatment and posttreatment period. Method: The subjects consisted of 11 adults (1 male, 10 females) whose open bites were treated by posterior teeth intrusion with miniscrew. The lateral cephalometric x-rays of pre-treatment, post-treatment, and the retention period were evaluated. Results: The average intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth at the end of the treatment period was 2.22 mm (p < 0.001) and the average extrusion of maxillary posterior teeth at the end of the 17.4 month retention period was 0.23 mm (p = 0.359). The relapse rate was calculated at 10.36%. A decrease in overbite after the 17.4 month retention period was 0.99 mm (p < 0.05). The relapse rate was calculated at 18.10%. The skeletal changes and vertical height change of maxillary posterior teeth during the retention period was statistically insignificant, but there was a significant decrease in overbite (mean 0.99 mm, p < 0.05). The amount of intrusion and the overbite improvement from treatment significantly correlates to the degree of relapse. Conclusions: The results indicate that intrusion of the maxillary posterior teeth using miniscrews is an effective, non-surgical treatment modality which can reasonably be used to address adult open bite.
To evaluate the relapse pattern and long-term stabilities depanding on surgical methods following orthognathic surgery of Cl III patients, the author selected 24 subjects(10 male, 14 female) operated by SSRO and 26 subjects(10 male,16 female) operated by IVRO. Each subject took four lateral cephalograms : just before surgery(T1), within 48hrs after surgery(T2), 4-8 wks after surgery(T3), 6 month or more after surgery(T4), and the landmarks were digitized. The differences of relapse patterns in each interval between two groups were compared and the significance of correlation among the variables of each group was tested. The obtained results are as follows ; 1. Horizontal early relapse was forward movement of mandible in SSRO group, as compared to the backward movement in IVRO group, and there was a statistical significance between the two groups. 2. Vertical early and late relapses were decreases in anterior facial height in both groups and there was no statistical significance between the two groups. 3. There was a statistical significance in negative correlation between mandibular horizontal late relapse and surgical change of articular angle in SSRO group. 4. There was a statistical significance in negative correlation between amount of mandibular set-back and mandibular horizontal early relapse in both groups.
The purpose of this study was to predict the prognosis of class III malocclusion treatments. 25 patients selected for this study were devided into two groups by the stability of dentitional, skeletal and soft tissue profile improvement. One was stable group which consisted of 12 children and the other was relapse group with 13 children. Various measurements in initial lateral cephalogram were calculated and analyzed by t-test, correlation coefficient and discriminant analysis. The results of this study were summarized as follows 1. In both stable and relapse groups, there was not distinct difference in the antero-posterior skeletal relationship (P<0.05). 2. As the result of wits, hn to occlusal plane angle and occlusal plane to mandubular plane angle, the occlusal plane of relapse group was stepper than that of the stable group. 3. In correlation coefficient analysis, the overjet and the occlusal plane to mandibular plane angle showed significant correlations (p<0.001, p<0.01). 4. The discriminant function was obtained from three major influential measurements; overjet, AB to occlusal plane angle and articular angle, and this function could discriminate correctly in 88% of these samples.
